BERLIN (April 22) -- World No. 1 tennis player Justine Henin-Hardenne will not take part in next month's German Open because of a viral infection, organizers said Thursday.

The Belgian, who withdrew from the Family Circle Cup in Charleston earlier this month, has been ordered to rest by doctors and has decided not to enter the May 3-9 tournament in Berlin.

The 21-year-old is due to defend her crown at the French Open starting on May 24 in Paris.

Former world No. 1 Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain, who played the German Open 12 times and won it in 1995, will make her comeback this year in the doubles competition.

Organizers said the 32-year-old, who plans to play at the Olympics in Athens in August, had been granted a wild card.

Anyone one know who are the top seeds now?

No surprise. I have been saying that for days.

I hope she gets better soon.

So for now, Kim is the top seed, but I expect that to change and either Amelie or Venus will be the top seed as I don't expect her to play either.

Kim (I don't expect her to play because of her wrist)
Amelie (If she plays Fed Cup, then she should play here)
Venus (Special Ranking)

Though I was desperately hoping to see her in person in Berlin...*sooo sad right now*...I am pretty happy to see taking the time out to get back to 100 percent health.

Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario wants a WC to play doubles in Berlin? Interesting. At least Anca Barna made it to the main draw due to Justineīs withdrawal...nice...lol

Well,I'm really  for you but I'm sure you'll get many other occastions to meet her.Justine really loves playing in Berlin and I'm sure she'll come back next year to play it if the tourney still exists ;)

Who is ASV playing with in doubles?

They didnīt say. She wanted the wildcard in order to get some training for the upcoming olympics. She will definetly play in Berlin.

Donīt know, but the news with German Open came out just today, so I guess every tounery-director welcomes star players like Arantxa, though she got signed up pretty late. Strasbourg is only a Tier III classified tournament, would make more sense if she participates in Rome...

Her "viral" infection, that robbed her of her strength, just like Ferrero's "Chickenpox" that robbed him off his strength ( isn't it too similar not to suspect it is a conspiracy ?) is just a coverup for some STD that they two contracted from someone else? JP Hardenne must be a prime suspect in that..

This is not looking good for Justine.

I think she'll show up at Roland Garros, just because she wants to defend, but I definitely don't think she'll be fit / prepared enough to give much of a battle.

It's a shame, really, why can't the women's tour ever have all of their top players fit at once.

It's like they're divided into three groups or something. The Williams sisters and Seles in one group, followed by Mauresmo, Clijsters and Henin-Hardenne, with Davenport and Seles in their own group.

I wanted Justine to be there and be healthy so Venus could face her.

I would've liked to see Justine get beat by Venus, but this makes it easier for Venus to win the title. Who knows, maybe Serena will enter and we'll see an all-Williams final!!

What an overwhelming record that is, I don't know how Venus could possible overcome it. :scared:

Venus would have been ready to avenge that 2001 Berlin loss at 2004 Berlin. Then again, she avenged it 7 straight times.

It's a shame that posters can gloat and laugh at the expence of another players ill health and only think about themselves.

Apparently, you didn't figure out that your fellow fanmate was on the assumption that venus has a MUCH BETTER chance at winning since Justine has withdrawn.:haha: I agreed with him. Talk about idiots.

Who 're you talking about? If it's K-Dog,I can hardly, the way he posts, call him a Venus'fan. And at this stage, let me just recall that neither of you nor me know the future and you know it better than me,in a tennis match, every thing can happen. It happens some times that a player is,for sure,an overwhelming favourite to win a match but there's always a 50-50 chance of victory for both players.

So I guess that it's okay for posters to rip on the Williams sister when they're injured and call them scared to play when they are INJURED!!
