Tennis fans can tune into Fed Cup coverage courtesy of The Tennis Channel this weekend. The network devoted to tennis opens the Fed Cup season with live coverage of the United States vs. Slovenia tie and taped coverage of the Belgium vs. Croatia opening-round tie.
Fresh off her Family Circle Cup championship — her first tournament title in 14 months — Venus Williams leads the United States squad that includes Lisa Raymond, Martina Navratilova and Laura Granville. The tie marks the debut of new U.S. captain Zina Garrison, who formerly served as Fed Cup coach under Billie Jean King.
It is an historic step as Garrison becomes the first African-American captain in the 40-year history of the women’s international team competition and the 18th U.S. Fed Cup captain.
"I’m thrilled to be selected captain of the U.S. Fed Cup team and am ready for the pursuit of a championship, having learned so much from my mentor — Billie Jean King," Garrison told Tennis Week.
Captain Mima Jausovec has selected Tina Pisnik, Katarina Srebotnik, Maja Matevzic and Tina Krizan to the Slovenia squad, which will host the tie on red clay at the 2,350-seat SRC Marina Portoroz stadium in Portoroz, Slovenia.
The Tennis Channel will televise the opening singles matches live on Saturday, April 24th from 6 to 10 a.m. and continue its live coverage on Sunday, April 25th at 6 a.m. with two singles matches and one doubles match.
The Tennis Channel will provide complete coverage of the Croatia at Belgium tie starting on Saturday, April 24th from noon to 4 p.m. and continuing on Sunday, April 25th from 1 to 7 p.m. The tie will be staged on red clay in the Expodroom Bree in Bree, Belgium.
Former French Open champion Iva Majoli, Family Circle Cup semifinalist Jelena Kostanic, Karolina Sprem and Silvija Talaja form the Croatian team captained by Goran Prpic.
Kim Clijsters, Els Callens, Kirsten Flipkens and Elke Clijsters have been named to the Belgian team though Kim Clijsters, currently nursing a tendon injury to her left wrist, has said she won't make a decision on her availability for the tie until Friday.
"My wrist is still a bit stiff," Clijsters said. "I want to have it rest as much as possible until Friday and then have real test. And decide only then about my Fed Cup participation. A decision doesn't only deal with next weekend, but I shouldn't jeopardize any future tournament."
