View Full Version : What do you expect from Monica's comeback?

Personally, i think she should skip the French and concentrate on Wimbledon. As she gets older, surely the surface becomes more favorable to her - short fast rallies and that lefty serve will always get her out of trouble. Pounding away on the clay i think, will do Monica more harm than good, she's going to struggle if she plays the French.

Also, if you look back to the people she's lost to at Wimbledon in the last few years, its been no disgrace, 7-6 7-6 against an on-fire Lucic, 7-5 7-6 against JHH, 6-7 6-4 6-0 against Davenport - she's certainly has her chances.

History suggest that Wimbledon favors the older player - Novotna, Martina Nav, Goran, Tauziat - lets hope Mon can complete the collection. :)

Unfortunately, as much as I would give my 2 front teeth to see monica win wimbledon, she is least effective on the surface, and her winning the title would take a miracle.

On grass, obviously you do well S+V'ing, the volley is not what made monica good. You also get a lot of balls to hit down low, which just happens to be where monica doesn't like 'em. In addition, grass favors players who are very quick and agile, again not monica.

She has a FAR better chance on clay, although if she comes back, slam wins are not very likey, unfortunately :( :( :( :(

If Davenport can win Wimbledon, there's no reason why Monica can't. Plus, like someone already mentionned, she lost some close matches against some great players. Btw, in the last few years her results have been similar everywhere, mainly around the "Quarters". It didn't matter whether it's on clay (French), hard (US), grass (Wimbledon) or even indoors (Chase). She can play on fast & slow. What matters is that she has to win one of those important key matches in the quarters, and this could happen in ANY grandslam.

Monica's foot injury has been re-aggravated again and again on Decoturf. If it is reasonably healed, playing on the clay shouldn't damage it. If she can stay healthy til the hardcourt season, I'd really like to see her do only one tuneup for the US Open, maybe San Diego.

and i think she really doesn't want to skip the french. she wants to show that last year was not the way she's going out. and paris might be her fav place other than melbourne.

I am cautiously optimistic. Monica seems to be taking her doctors' advice and is taking it SSSSSLLLLLOOOOOWWWW! On clay, I give Monica as much chance as any player on the tour. In that match with Lindsay at Wimbledon, she just ran out of gas. If she's fit and healthy, she's back in the top 10 easily.

Oh, I also expect her to marry me along with Dr. Condoleeza. *speak to me in Russian, Condi! Do it now!!!* :o

I can't imagine Monica fast enough to deal with the sheer velocity of the groundstrokes of a Venus or Serena or Justine on grass. Or even Capriati or Petrova. The ball gets through the court so quickly. Monica needs a surface that slows the ball down enough for her to catch up to it.

As for why Lindsay and not Monica?

Lindsay's in way better physical condition, and when she won it, she had by far the biggest serve on the tour. And one aspect of the tour that has really changed since Lindsay won (BECAUSE Lindsay won) is that return-of-serve has gotten better on the tour. There are many more players who can return a 100+ mph serve with an outright winner. Serving used to mean automatic control of the point. No longer true. Monica has to be ready to move, move, move.

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but Monica had fractures in her feet. That's a weight-bearing issue. Put bluntly, she can't get away with being fat. If she's heavy, every running step put an incredible load on her feet. If she's out there at 175-180 lbs again, she'll just break her feet.

She doesn't have to be in the shape that Serena's in. (I mean, who is?) But I think she does have to be in the shape that Lindsay's in. If you want it in comparitive weight terms, she has to weigh less than Venus.

I'm sure we are not the only ones who want to know this. Monica is committed to a tier III which she pretty much dominated. If she is ready, then she should be able to have a winning streak going into French Open. If not, then she just might do the unthinkable:eek:;)

She's been out for a year. I don't have any high expectations. Yes she returned to the tour before and dominated the Canadian...but the tour has changed a lot.

And I personally think clay would be nicer on her foot than grass.

Volcana, Madrid is no longer on the calendar...it's Strasbourg, and only if she feels 100% ready for it.

Ditto to Kart (:wavey: ) and everyone else who's just happy to see Monica hitting balls again and on court! Maybe I'll also add that I expect the pleasure of seeing someone of rare grace and unparalleled competitiveness doing what she absolutely loves....

I'm thrilled shes back, Mon has a way of adding this really cool spark and charm to the tour . I wish her all the success in the world and hopefully she can add to her long list of titles. The only thing that scares me is the thought of her struggling to win matches against the lower ranked players. In the begining its expected, but if she cant find her winning forum after a while, Id rather have her retire than be a shadow of her former self.

Well good luck to Monica if anybody deserves some it would be Monica.
I went to Wimbledon one year when Seles was about 17 and she was just amazing to watch. I don't know how many of you were watching tennis at the times Monica dominated but back then she was so intense and so full of energy and buzzing around all the time. I know since she has came back she has not dominated in the same way but she is still so intense on court like no one else has ever been. Would love to see her at Wimbledon again.

If she's out there at 175-180 lbs again, she'll just break her feet.

I seriously doubt that Monica was EVER close to 175lbs

I think she'll come out firing - being back on court seems to give Monica a new lease of life and god knows the tour needs her now probably more that in the first 6 months of her absence. She'll also have a quite high injury protection ranking which should help her ascend up the rankings. Can't wait to see her back, and by the way 30 isn't really that old and certainly won't be a limiting factor anytime she plays.

I'd say she was close to that at some point in 1997. My gf is a couple of inches taller than Monica but when she weighed 180lbs she looked about the same size Monica did back then...

Is your girlfriend built then? Monica in 1997 looks no more than 160 pounds to me. Maybe she put some afterwards, but she just does not look that heavy. Does you girlfriend go to the gym every week? It's not too likely girl Monica's size will go to 180 ibs

I seriously doubt that Monica was EVER close to 175lbs.She has always looked a lot heavier than Venus, and Venus is listed at 160 lbs. And I suspect THAT number. Monica's a half inch shy of six feet. She could easily carry 175 lbs. To compare her to another player, there were times post-2000 that Monica looked like Lindsay in the early 90's. And Lindsay was well over 200 lbs then. Monica's three inches shorter, so if she was over 200 she'd be a beach ball.

Or, compare her to the Huntress. What do you think SERENA weighs? How much more than that does Monica weigh? Don't know about now, but I can't remember a time when Monica didn't look AT LEAST 30 lbs heavier than Serena. Monica is an inch taller, of course.

But I doubt ANYONE in the WTA except Hantuchova has their weight HIGHER than it is in truth. And anyone who thinks Monica weighs less than Venus is not using the same wavelength for a visual spectrum that I am.

are u kidding? serena i bet DOES weigh more than monica even being shorter...
and 175 lbs isn't that much at all on a professional female athlete who is almost 6 feet tall.... especially one who isn't thin and has a semi big build.

Hantuchova
Height 5'11 1/4'' (1.81 m)
Weight 123 lbs. (56 kg)

Cho 5'5 3/4'' (1.67 m) 122 lbs. (55 kg)
Coetzer 5'2 1/4'' (1.58 m) 119 lbs. (54 kg)
Kournikova 5'8 1/4'' (1.73 m) 123 lbs. (56 kg) one pound heavier
I'm sure there are plenty more
Coetzer doesnt look like 120 Ibs, coz she is short, same goes for Monica, she is short, and does not look fit, so it's easy to think she weighs more.

faboozadoo15

monica's not short, and fitness has less to do with weight than you may think. muscle weighs too, and so do boobs and butts...
