World No. 2 Kim Clijsters, who is nursing a wrist injury, will decide on Friday whether she'll play in this weekend's Fed Cup tie against Croatia.

Belgium already has to do without Justine Henin-Hardenne, who is recovering from an energy-sapping virus, and missing both stars would put the 2001 champion in a tough position in the first round of the world group.

"My wrist is still a bit stiff," Clijsters said on her web site www.kimclijsters.com. "I want to protect it as much as possible until Friday ... Only then will I make a decision about the Fed Cup."

The right-hander injured her left wrist last month and kept it in a brace until last weekend when she played a charity match against her fiancee Lleyton Hewitt.

Because she has a double-fisted backhand, both wrists are essential to her game. She wants to make sure that the Fed Cup tie against Croatia will not jeopardize the rest of her season.

"It is not only about this weekend but I also don't want to endanger the tournaments that come after it," she said. Clijsters wants to be fully fit again for next month's French Open, where she lost to Henin-Hardenne in the final last year.

Clijsters is especially keen to play the Fed Cup tie because it takes place in her home town of Bree.

If Clijsters plays, she will join Els Callens, Kirsten Flipkens and Elke Clijsters against Croatia's Karolina Sprem, Jelena Kostanic, Silvija Talaja and Iva Majoli.

I think Belgium will lose without Kim.
But it is better she skip it and be 250% sure she is not jeopardizing her season, or her career.
I want her back healthy facing Venus and Serena. Let's face it, the Croatian girls got nothing on Kim and would get blown away by a healthy Kim, even and unhealthy Kim would do the job. She has to want to be #1, not be a Fed Cup champion.
If she can do both, than more power on her.
She probably feels she should play because it is in her hometown, but I think she should skip.

Do they have someone to replace Kim if she doesn't play?

I really think and hope that she would play cuz...Its really kinda impossible that she doesnt wanna use her one handed backhand that much...or something like that...and after the Fed-Cup, she does have 2 weeks rest anyways...i mean her left hand-2 more weeks to practice her one handed backhand and as ms Venus would say..."make it an asset rather than a liability" or something like that...
It would be really cool if they meet the US of A in the future round...

I agree as well..skip Fed Cup for sure.

It's not nearly as important as the rest of her year.

Belgium will lose without Kim. Croatia will probably have Sprem & Kostanic playing the first two singles matches and both are very much in form... you can't say the same for Els Callens or Kirsten Flipkens (just coming off an injury).

Kim has had a difficult shoulder injury in her right shoulder, so it would be quite stupid to burden her right hand too much.

I want to see Kim out on the courts, but I seriously want her to fully recover. I don't know what state her wrist is in, and perhaps it is fully healed, but I think that taking the extra few days off would probably be a smarter (long-term) decision than to play Fed Cup and possibly risk re-injury, which could screw up her clay season (and would essentially break my heart! :tears: ). So Kim, please give it serious thought because your long-term health is more important than a few Fed Cup matches.

We could easily make up Kim's mind up for for Her,just send Her a message to say the tie has been shifted to Moscow, or Ekatahuna or anywhere Kimmy Girl dosen't approve of! while on the subject of Aunty Kim, has anyone noticed the strange bodily change that takes place after Kimmy wins a point, as She struts back to position doing the usual string studying,Her butt protudes out at least another 5 cms, this does not occur when She loses a point, this could lead to permanent butt-enlargment, I mean Serena has won a lot of points so far hasn't She! I have so far studied this phenom for two years of off and on viewing and am think of doing a thesis on this
phenominum Keep winning points Kimmy
