Canada starts strong at Fed Cup
PORTO SEGURO, Brazil - A young Canadian Fed Cup team has started off strong in Day One action at the American Zone Group I round robin in Porto Seguro, Brazil, blasting Cuba 3-0.
In the first match of the day, youngster Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., got the ball rolling with a quick 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Yanisleidis Calana-Rodriguez. Wozniak, playing in her first-ever Fed Cup match, is currently the top junior in the country at No.18 on the ITF junior rankings.
In match two, Canada's No.1 singles player, Marie-Eve Pelletier of Repentigny, Que., posted her first Fed Cup singles win, stopping Cuba's top player, Yanet Nunez-Mojarena by a 6-0, 6-3 count. In doubles play, Pelletier and Mlanie Marois of Ste-Foy, Que., Nunez-Mojarena and Calana-Rodriguez, 6-3, 6-2.
"This is a great start for our team," said team Captain Rene Simpson. "All the girls played really well. We're just going to take it one match at a time and look forward to the challenge."
The fourth team member, Stphanie Dubois of Laval, Que., is currently en route to Brazil after winning the doubles title at a $25,000 event in Mississippi over the weekend.
The team has the day off on Tuesday and faces Uruguay on Thursday. Canada, who holds a 5-0 record against the Uruguayans, is the top seed in its pool and is jointed by Cuba, Uruguay, Chile and Brazil.
Fed Cup is the international team championship for women. Founded in 1963 by the International Tennis Federation, it has since grown to the point where over 100 countries compete in the event on an annual basis. In 1995, the present format -similar to the zonal format used for the Davis Cup - was introduced. Canada seeks to return to the World Group for the first time since 1994.
