View Full Version : What a surprise: Gullickson/Novotna partnership

Well I was a little surprised to read in the Challenger forum that Jana Novotna has become young American Carly Gullickson's new coach.

I had been wondering if Jana would ever become a coach, but I had assumed she would have taken a new Czech talent under her wing.

Does anybody know how does this come about and does anyone think this could be great for Carly's career?

I only saw her play once and that was against Iroda Tulyganova a few years ago in a Wimbledon first-round match.

She actually seemed very aggressive on court, but Iroda simply had more experience. Carly at that time seemed a step slower and definitely looked like she needed to be in better shape.

But she is definitely a pretty girl and I can only imagine Jana would be good for her in the long run.

Whoa, let's hope Carly can get some use out of her and improver her game :D

Jana always said she hated travel too much to become a coach.

I watched Carly vs. Safina at the US Open 03 and I liked Carly a lot. She was up 5-2 in the first set and could have closed out Safina in straight sets (had break points in the second set) but I guess the moment was too much for her. She lost. Safina had to play well (which she absolutely did)

She definitely needs to get in better shape. She seemed a bit sloppy and I would suspect her fitness is to blame. She had a pretty nice baseline game otherwise.
