View Full Version : Martina tells Patty what she should have done

This is from Martina's press conference today:

The thing with the ball, everybody is superstitious, but when it affects your opponent, that's not good. And frankly, if I was playing her and she was doing that, I would put that ball in my pocket, too. Or what I would do I would have another ball on me and I would take that ball and I'd hit the two balls back and say, okay, which one do you think you won the point with. Really confuse her.

And she wants to be a politician? With this immaturity, she would make a bad one.
I don't think she likes Martinez because she lost to her in '94 Wimbledon final. And she always had said that Conchita is lazy and that she would have rather lost to Zina than to Conchita.
In my opinion, she needs to keep her mouth shut.

If have to say that it would be hilarious if Martina did that.

I'm sure Conchita would probably laugh as well.

Zummi
Apr 18th, 2004, 11:25 PM
Obviously, she meant it as a joke...

She explained what she thought of the using-the-same-ball routine:

And let's say you get new balls and she's serving with new balls and you play long rallies, she wins it. She gets that fluffy ball back and she keeps playing with the same ball, same ball, then you got five new balls again.

I always want to circulate so that every ball gets worn out the same. The ball doesn't know that it won the point for you. But it's her superstition, but if was I was playing her, you certainly can't let it bother you, and you'd say to the umpire, are you watching the clock, and that takes care of that. If she's playing within the clock, that's fair enough. If you don't want her to have that ball, put it in your pocket just like she did. So whatever. I mean we know she does it. She doesn't do it to annoy people. She's superstitious and does it every time.

Damn, why don't she do what Venus did today... Just keep playing your game.
Lose the first set... just keep playing. Use whatever ball you want, you still have to play me.

Venus and Serena normally don't let things like this affect them. An angry player is often the losing player. It even happened to Serena at RG 2003!

Zummi
Apr 19th, 2004, 02:04 AM
It seems to me that if Martina says anything remotely critical of Martinez - even if she's only joking - it is automatically construed as her being bitter over losing the Wimbledon final

She would probably have said the same thing regardless of who the opponent was. But oh well... For what it's worth, I thought she also defended Martinez in her interview, pointing out that she wasn't doing it on purpose or to annoy her opponent and that keeping it under 20 seconds was perfectly legal, but I guess all that can be conveniently overlooked.

Lucky COnchita did win the Wimby final, otherwise her career would go down as probably the BIGGEST waste of talent of all time.

a lazy Martinez beat a hard working navratilova at wimbledon on grass.
what does that say about Martina?
Martinez is doing what she wants. Nav has no right to call her lazy.
In my opinion, Martina is a bitch. There, if Navratilova can have her opinions, I have mine!
Sure Martinez might not have been fully dedicated to tennis. Maybe because 110% of her life isn't dedicated all around tennis like Martina's.
It's funny how Evert is not recognized even close to Martina. Maybe because she has a life outside of tennis?
Martina has all right to be completely dedicated to the game she loves, but can she shut up already about other players!

I think what Martina said is funny. I would love to see the tension and expressions on that court when and if she does that. It would be funny. Martina should shut up her mouth and go to a mental residenceOh, c'mon! It's just a joke, you have to admit that all the things Conchita does on court are funny (as in haha funny ;)). Martina is just making a joke. There is no need to be mean to her. I think the whole hiding-ball-in-underpants by Patty was rather funny too. Tennis is just a game, a bit of humor is appreciated sometimes. I am sure Conchita would find it funny too. Did you see that match between Gala and Conchita 4R RG 1999? When Gala was screaming at Conchita for reaching all the dropshots and not putting the ball where she wanted? Conchita WAS laughing too, she has a sense of humor.

Oh come on guys ... if you read the whole interview, Martina's words don't sound too bad. She did defend Conchita's position ... so stop bringing the "Wimbledon" bitterness stuff .. I don't think that this is what it is about!

Anyway ... it is hard to understand those superstitious things ... did you actually notice that most of the times, Martinez actually lost the point when she used the ball that had won the previous point ... it would have been a good thing for her not to play with the same ball twice!

Good for Venus for not letting Conchita break her focus ...

The woman has yet to forgive Conchita for stealing a wimbledon title from her over 10 years ago. In retrospect, I am extremely angry at Conchita. Had she not won that title, Martina will not be trying to kill herself on the court at 47! and we would have been spared of this shit.

C'mon guys, I am sensitive to Martina and Conchita issues, I think what Martina said was funny. Conchita does look a little silly with that routine (and I love Conchita) but Conchita really exaggerated it against Patty from the first point. She didn't take that long and do the routine as hard against Nadia or Venus. She was totally messing with Patty imo (do they have a history?), because I think she knew it would get under Patty's skin and affect the match. It did. Is Patty so fragile mentally that Conchita's routine turns a win into a straight set loss? Apparently. That's Patty's fault. I always thought the negative mental stuff said about Patty was overblown, but it appears to be true. The girls has a really nuts side, and it costs her matches. Patty also shouted something foul at Conchita towards the end of the match, that girl is really rude. Martina would never do something like that, the handshake refusal or the comment. But Patty's point was proven, when she hid the balls those times, Conchita still won the point. Maybe Patty was more focused on playing jokes on Conchita than winning the match!

I too think Conchita's actions were exaggerated against Patty. Conchita was even getting on her fan's nerves in the stands.

If Conchita thought Patty was so fragile mentally that it would get under her skin enough to throw Patty off her game well then Conchita was right on cause Patty cracked like a soda can left in the freezer...

I have criticized Martina in the past for making statements that I don't agree with or think are inappropriate. This time, it was the talk of the day. When 80-90% of the crowd is booing a player when she leaves the court after such antics (has anyone ever offered a hand to shake and then yanked it back at the last second ever happened?), it was the rage of the tournament. Plus, Martina had to play Patty later that day in doubles, so it is natural that Martina is asked about it. Even I was wondering what Martina would say given I know she doesn't care for Conchita. If Martina wasn't there and asked about it months later for a newspaper article or something, I might think Martina should keep her mouth shut, but she was at the tournament and played Patty later, so I think it was a fair question and a funny answer. Plus, Martina did not take a personal shot at Conchita, her work ethic, or her game. It was an appropriate question and an honest answer that wasn't nasty.

Martina was obviously joking. She has always been opinionated and dry and witty in press conferences and has been for years, it's one of the reasons I like her. She did say Conchita does not do it to annoy anybody and it is just part of her routines. Players know that and should be used to it. Patty was just too flaky to handle it and couldn't play good tennis once she got involved in trying to mock Conchita.

I don't understand how Martina has been getting so much criticism lately. Have a lot of people on here always not liked her views or is it because she has played these singles matches? She seems to have copped a lot of hatred the last few weeks. I am a big Conchita fan, but nothing in what Martina says has made me think she is still bitter about Wimbledon 1994. Martina was really gracious to Conchita after that match even though it was huge for her.

Hey, Philbo! I saw Martina at both Amelia and Charleston. She was totally cool! I didn't get her autograph, but at Amelia, Ronnie and I watched her get a longevity award, and we left the stadium, then Ronnie bitched at me that he wanted an ice cream. Ronnie's wish is my command. So, I got him one, and we're walking through the crowds and tents, and Ronnie's in front of me, then this rude woman pushes me out of the way, and when she leaves, Martina herself passes by me and then looks over Ronnie's shoulder, and says, "that ice cream, it looks good" then continued on to a tent where she signed autographs (and the line was a mile long). In the commotion, I lost Ronnie and was panicing because he's old and like losing him in a crowd is like losing a little child. I did find him later and asked him if he knew who commented on his ice cream. He said "some woman with an accent" liked his ice cream, but he wasn't going to give it away. I told him "some woman" was Martina! He knows who Martina is, but was more interested in finishing his ice cream. Ronnie is old, sorry! It was our greatest brush with Martina. Conchita signed my hat, though, at Charleston, so we had two moments of fun. We watched Martina pratice twice at Charleston, and then watched the title match. We saw her practice once at Amelia. I'm too chicken to ask her for an autograph, but Ronnie and I (at least I) will remember that Martina liked Ronnie's ice cream.

My god. I can not believe all the insults directed to and dissing of Martina, one of the best, if not the best player in the history of tennis. That alone should allow her to speak her mind, especially when answering a direct question during a tennis interview!

I think some of what Martina said about the Patty-Conchita incident was said tongue in cheek but she also said that Patty should try not to get upset over Conchita's ball superstitions and that Conchi wasn't doing it to annoy anybody. This is so bad?

Someone mentioned Martina encouraging bad sportsmanship!! This is so ridiculous!! Martina ALWAYS showed great sportsmanship!! Anyone who knows her career at all knows she speaks her mind but is always a good sport, even when playing before spectators who never cheered for her because she was a lesbian, muscular, and "foreign" even after she became an American citizen.
