Hi folks. I stumbled on this forum in the course of a web-search for info. on Myskina. Seeing all the messages of enthusiastic support for her really brought a smile to my face and so I registered just to add my voice to them! I'm not by any means a full-time tennis-follower and probably know very little compared to most people in this forum, but was so impressed by her play at the French Open, and warmed to her personality on court so much too, that I would count myself as a new fan. Her gameplay is exciting, and I find it's very easy to empathise with her and will her to do well.

I really want her to win Wimbledon, and am a bit surprised that the bookmakers have rated her only about sixth favourite for the tournament from the start, in defiance of her excellent record of the past 12 months. Perhaps the presumption is that the Williams sisters are indomitably advantaged over her on grass as compared with other surfaces. Well, I placed a ten pound bet on her anyway, at 16/1 last weekend (the first time I've ever gambled on any sporting event, believe it or not) and even if she doesn't make it all the way I really hope she reaches a Williams showdown and goes out in style, and that the few dropped service games in her first set of her first round match can be put down to 'warming up', and she'll get into the flow of her game and become more and more consistent with each match to follow: otherwise she runs the risk of being beaten unnecessarily early by a third or fourth round opponent. She has the talent and the will to win - consistency and form on the crucial match days is all she needs.

You are welcome here solge:wavey:
I'm glad to see that Nastya gains new fans (I'm new here too, but her long-time fan) with her amazing play and personality. Unfortunately she gains many haters too and we have to battle hard with them in General messages.
If you haven't noticed yet, Nastya has her subforum and cheering thread in "Russian roulette" where you can find always news, interviews, pictures and our comments:)

Thanks for your message!

It saddens me to think anyone could hate her. She comes across to me on-screen and in interview transcripts as being a good-natured and thoughtful person. Hating anyone at all is a pity, but if people can't help themselves hating they should reserve that hatred for evil, destructive people and organisations, not harmless and sweet-natured sports stars. I really warm to her, and I can understand that fans of her rivals might regard her as a threat to the success of their favourites as she improves in hers, but that is no reason to hate her. All the top 50 or so women tennis players earn very decent incomes on the tour; and the fact that there is competition out there makes the sport more interesting and entertaining, whoever one's personal favourites may be. A favourite player losing a match here or there to a better player on the day is no disgrace, and no reason to hate the victor.

I'm confident that for every hater there are many who have nothing but good, caring wishes and appreciation for her. Although haters may be particularly vocal, they will always be hugely outnumbered by appreciative supporters, many of whom probably never speak up to voice their quiet appreciation, but others of whom are eager to declare it in abundance (which is only positive and nice!)

I'll be sure to check out the other subforum you mention when I have time - thanks for mentioning it.

Down with hate - long live love!

Jackson.

Hi people.

I've been looking up a bit of info. on Kapros at the wtatour site. Although as I've said before I'm no expert on the tennis scene, it seems to me from the statistics that she'll be no pushover - although not quite as much of a threat as Sharapova, Kapros is very much on the up and up in the rankings, having risen from world no. 92 at the start of this year to no. 44 by mid-May, and reached the fourth or third (the two pages on her conflict on this detail) round at the Australian. Besides, last year she made the third at Wimbledon, so she will be very keen to defend those ranking points by making the same round again this year.

If Kapros remains on the form she has shown this year, Anastasia will have to be at her best to win this one comfortably - otherwise she may be in for a close call. I expect she'll need a fair lot of energy to battle it out in long rallies against this girl anyway. But she should still be able to win provided that she doesn't make too many unforced errors and stays fit throughout the match.

Very best of luck to Anastasia today - or tomorrow, depending on what the rain does!

Indeed solge, Aniko shouldn't be underestimated. She has some big wins in slams (vs Justine and Petrova) and she may be very dangerous. But Nastya knows that. In her interview after the 1rd. she said that she doesn't expect an easy match, she remembers Kapros' win over Nadya at AO and called Aniko "dark horse". And after yesterday's bad surprises with her countrywomen and friends I think Nastya will be extremely focused and won't allow another one. Nevertheless Aniko has one of the weakest serves on tour and Nastya should exploit that being more aggressive.
So, I believe all will be OK:yeah: , only it seems today won't be a match:rain: :fiery:

Well, we predicted that she would have tough work fending off Kapros in long rallies, and our worst fears came horribly true, but she just survived!

Congratulations to Anastasia on getting through a horribly scary match despite having her serve broken so many times. :) She's a strong fighter, but that was a very close call....

Poor Anastasia. I thought it was very unfair to make her play two matches on Court No. 2 within 24 hours. She must have been exhausted, and that's not a nice court to play on any time.

Amy Frazier has a very good Wimbledon record spanning many years and was always going to be tough opposition on grass, but I think if the match had been scheduled more sympathetically, with a full day's break after the last, Anastasia would have won it.

I hope Anastasia is not too sad, and moves on to the next challenge at the next tournament she plays with refreshed confidence.

I didn't see the actual match in video form either, but was following the real-time scoreboard at the Wimbledon site. And from being in a winning position at 6-4, 4-2, serving for a 5-2 lead, Anastasia embarked on a disastrous service-game-losing streak, losing four of her next six service games, while Frazier won all five of her next service games, although in many games by both players the scores were very close and it seemed to boil down to chance as much as anything as to who won the crucial points. So anyway, Anastasia lost nine of the next eleven games to go 6-4, 4-6, 2-5 down. Then she saved match points against her on Frazier's next service game, and broke back at last, before winning her own next service game comfortably, but it was too late, as although she had another break point against Amy as Amy served at 4-5, she failed to convert it, and Frazier won the game and match, 6-4 in the final set.
