Berlin, 3 May 2004

Round table interview with Venus Williams

Question (Q): You have started playing really well. What is the difference compared to the last

WILLIAMS: Oh, thank you. Maybe itís just to have the opportunity to go out there and play, and to
play more or less pain free. Iíve built the confidence in the game. It was tough at the beginning of
the year: I didnít have enough preparation time. When I was playing a match I was just
compromising my game. It is difficult to play when you are not fit enough. I guess the difference is
that I am healthy.

Q: Which one of the different injuries you had was the most difficult?

WILLIAMS: The leg was difficult because it just wasnít going away. Then, I turned my ankle a
couple of times. It was really frustrating. But I had a lot of good support. My sisters, my mum and
my dad were very positive: They always said I was playing well, even if I wasnít. So I thought I
just have to focus on the positive.

Q: Is it something you tend to do in your head, not to think positive?

WILLIAMS: I think I can do better. Itís not my strength to think positive, but it is important to be
positive and not to think what went wrong, what did I do wrong in the match. I got caught up in a
negative way of thinking.

Q: Did you also have a back injury?

WILLIAMS: Not, thank God. That wasnít on the list.

Q: How important was the win in Charleston?

WILLIAMS: It was important. I was able to play a lot of matches and to improve. It was good for

Q: Did the feeling of winning boost your confidence?

WILLIAMS: Thatís an interesting question. I have won titles so many times, so I knew the feeling.
But it was good: I knew what I had to do in matches.

Q: Did you at times have the fear of not making it, of not getting back?

WILLIAMS: No. It was just a long way. But, I never felt that I wouldnít make it. I always had hope
that I would get through.

Q: Did you ever have doubts?

WILLIAMS: No, I never doubted it, but it was a long way and hard work.

Q: What strength did you take out of it?

WILLIAMS: The fact that I know I can do it. That I can regroup and have to focus on the future. It
is hard when you get negative on yourself.

Q: Now, itís two titles. Are you going for a bigger one?

WILLIAMS: Iíd love to. I wouldnít say No. But I have to deserve everything.

Q: Is there something you want to improve?

WILLIAMS: I will work a little more on my serve. Especially on my first serve. Iíll work on
staying calmer on the court because I get too excited. I need to calm down, look at the ball and hit it
and not get too excited about what I can do with it. I must not get ahead of myself.

Q: Youíve never one the German Open. What makes you optimistic?

WILLIAMS: Iíve only been here once and wasnít here long enough. But, I feel good, Iím moving
well. Iím feeling positive. I just have to stay positive.

Q: How are your chances at the French Open?

WILLIAMS: That seems a little bit away. It seems so far, but so close. I definitely want to play well
here and keep building my game. Do the right things, do what my mum says.

Q: What does she say?

WILLIAMS: All the right things. I donít attribute my mistakes to my coaches but to myself.

Q: How do you rate your game?

WILLIAMS: I am in a better mental state. I feel I understand the game better

Q: Do you think getting over all the setbacks has made you a stronger player?

WILLIAMS: I would have preferred not to have the setbacks, but Iíve never looked at it that way.

Q: Some of your rivals think that both you and Serena are good players, but when you are both at a
tournament you are twice as good as individuals?

WILLIAMS: I never thought about it that way. We definitely give each other a lot of support and
motivation. We have a lot of fun, but I never thought it has an effect if war are both in the draw.

Q: Was it important for Serena for you to get back. Is she not as strong without you?

WILLIAMS: We are both fighting for each other. But, I donít put pressure on her. She is an sdult

Q: You have a lot of activities, you donít see as much of each other.

WILLIAMS: We both have tight schedules. We donít see each other as much as before. I think
Charleston was the last time. We went shopping together, laughed a lot. We had a great gime.

Q: Being away for a time, did you enjoy other things more?

WILLIAMS: At this point, I like tennis more than a lot of things. There are a lot of things to
explore, but I want to be best at tennis.

Q: What did you miss most?

WILLIAMS: There wasnít anything I missed too much. I think it was good in a way I was away. It
will maybe extend my career. Playing year in year out is a lot to ask of a person.

Q: Until when do you intend to play?

WILLIAMS: I am not limiting it. I like to think I know when itís time to go, but not now.

Q: Everyone in the top 10 was injured, it was not only you. Do you think there should be some

WILLIAMS: As regards the sport as a business: I think to get the public to know what the tour is,
the prestige of the titles and have it on TV. That would help.
As far a as the players: It is very demanding, itís a lot for one person. If itís on a team, itís a
different kind of pressure, I suppose. I just try to do my best all the time.

Q: You and your sister are supposed to go to Athens? There are discussions of the US not going?

WILLIAMS: I am expecting us to go. I havenít heard the discussions, I havenít been contacted. I
am not worried about it. The world is hard these days, but I expect them to have good security
measures to protect their athletes.

Q: Is it special for you to represent your country?

WILLIAMS: Yes, definitely. Hopefully this time I can do more than last time.

Q: From the 5 jobs you do you mentioned, what do you prefer?

WILLIAMS: Probably design. But I enjoy everything that I do. Not many people have the
opportunity to do what they like. So, it is a blessing.
Once I leave the court, I have a lot of things I consider my job. Then there is practice and also other
things. You need to find a balance

Q: Are you visiting some special places in Berlin?

WILLIAMS: I want to go to the zoo. Do they have popcorn?

Q: What are your favourite animals?

WILLIAMS: I donít really know. I donít like birds as much.

Q: Which zoos have you been to?

WILLIAMS: I was at the zoo in Warsaw. Then there was a tragedy in San Diego where I had a trip
to the zoo scheduled. Then there cancelled it. Of course, Iíve been to the zoos in Florida.
I donít know why I like the zoo: Maybe itís my inner child that likes zoo

Venus advanced to the third round of the Ladies German Open in Berlin today after a hard fought match.

Playing Eleni Daniilidou, a talented player from Greece, Venus advanced with a 7-5 6-3 victory.

The match started with Daniilidou breaking Venus' serve. Venus quickly rebounded and went up 3-1. Daniilidou refused to go away without a fight, and led 5-4. Daniilidou served for the first set, but Venus regrouped and won the final three games of the first set.

In the second set, Daniilidou again got off to a fast start, going up 2-0. Venus picked up her level and only dropped one more game in the match.

The victory is Venus' 12th straight victory on Tour. She is seeking her third straight title on Tour, and her first German Open title.

In the third round, Venus will face Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi, the 16th seed, who scored a three set victory over Nathalie Dechy.

Smashing Winhttp://www.venuswilliams.com/pix/1.gifhttp://www.venuswilliams.com/pix/1.gif5/6/04 4:47 PM

Venus powered her way into the Ladies German Open quarterfinals today, posing a 6-3 6-1 victory over Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi, the #16 seed.

According to Venus, the victory was much easier than her first match against Eleni Daniilidou.

``It was definitely better than yesterday -- I was just trying to make things happen and I started attacking the net,'' the third-seeded Venus said.

The match started closely, as Smashnova held to lead 3-2 in the first set. Venus then started to take control. Using incredible power and depth on her shots, Venus kept Smashnova behind the baseline and knocked off winners. Smashnova would only win one more game in the match.

The victory marks another quarterfinal for Venus and she extends her winning streak to 13 matches, This is her longest winning streak since the summer of 2002. Next she will face the 11th seeded Paola Suarez, who upset #5 seed Nadia Petrova in straight sets.

Berlin, 07 May 2004
Interview with VENUS WILLIAMS
Williams Ė Suarez 7:6 (5), 5:7, 6:2

Q: Miss Williams, why was it that tough?
WILLIAMS: It was just a tough day. I didnít get as many balls in as I wanted to. So, it was good I
came out with a win. It was okay. But nothing was really working.
Q: The conditions were pretty difficult and it was quite windy.
WILLIAMS: No, it wasnít too windy.
Q: Did you win because you battled?
WILLIAMS: Yes, I suppose so. But it wasnít working: My shots were either too short or too long. I
didnít find the middle ground.
Q: So is it just a match to get past it?
WILLIAMS: Yes, exactly. A match to forget and carry on tomorrow.
Q: Did you mind not playing on the Centre Court?
WILLIAMS: No, I didnít mind. It could have been worse; it could have rained.
Q: The conditions are heavy.
WILLIAMS: Maybe itís even better, because when it gets too dry you donít know where the ball is
going to bounce and which way to go.
Q: You said a few days ago that you were working on staying calmer. Did that help today?
WILLIAMS: Yes, it was pretty good. I was quite calm today.
Q: Does a tough match like today make you more eager and wanting to concentrate better?
WILLIAMS: Definitely. It makes you want the next one be better. I donít want the same
appearance as today tomorrow. So, I want to satisfy myself and play better
Q: Your opponent tomorrow is fairly new. Do you know something about her?
Q: So if you donít know your opponent do you just play your own game?
WILLIAMS: Yes and hopefully I will play to win. Obviously she must be a good player to come so
Q: Have you talked to anybody after the match?
WILLIAMS: No, not really.
Q: How do you feel after such a long match?
WILLIAMS: I feel okay. We will see tomorrow. I always wonder how long I was out there. The
time just passes.
Q: This is the longest winning streak since 2001. Does this mean anything to you?
WILLIAMS: Oh, thatís good.
Q: Did it help a little bit that the court was slow?
WILLIAMS: Maybe. I wasnít able to move it; every other ball was an error.

Venus :D

Interview with VENUS WILLIAMS

Williams Ė Sprem 2:6, 6:3, 6:4

Q: That was very gutsy. How is your fitness? How are you feeling?

WILLIAMS: I donít know, Iíll have to see tomorrow. I just had a little rest after the match, tried to

ice it and recover.

Q: You looked a little worried at 0:3.

WILLIAMS: No, I wasnít worried. At change over I just thought Ďjust hold it and have the break. I

guess it was all simple to me. The three games went so quickly. But, I was still certain of myself. I

was playing better, I was moving better. I was still very confident. I wasnít stressed.

Q: Why was it that difficult?

WILLIAMS: I think she just came out there swinging. She had nothing to lose out there. She started

to hit winners, she was hitting and doing well. But, I stayed calm and just had to stick to my game. I

didnít have to do something spectacular just because she was being super spectacular. I guess it

evened out in the end.

Q: She is one of the players people havenít heard of that much.

WILLIAMS: Oh, these days this doesnít really mean anything. You have to be ready. I was

anticipating that she will come out and play like that. I was ready for it. She didnít make any

mistakes at the beginning, but I did and I could not afford to.

Q: How is it to be up for your third title?

Q: Clay hasnít been your best surface Ö

WILLIAMS: Why hasnít it been my best surface?

Q: You tell me?

WILLIAMS: No, who says that?

Q: You are better on grass, better on hardcourt.

WILLIAMS: Is that a fact? If you compare, we play approx. 2 months on clay. Compared to the

tournaments I play on other surfaces, I think the results are there for me on clay. Every surface I

play, I will battle and fight. I will not let anybody tell me clay is not my surface. Itís no excuse.
Q: Did you twist your foot? Does it hurt now?

WILLIAMS: In the last game, I was sliding for a shot and twisted my ankle. It is an issue. I donít

know what is going to happen. I will have to deal with it tonight and how much I can do. It was

good it was the last game and I didnít have to play another (laughs).

Q: When you took the time out, was that your hip?

WILLIAMS: Yes, it was.

Q: Is it o.k. now?

WILLIAMS: I donít know.

Q: Any other injuries?

WILLIAMS: No (laughs). Besides the ankle which was terrible then, I guess itís just the court

because it was so damp; you were sliding less, it played more like hardcourt. So, I can kind of

blame it on me because I didnít win the match earlier.

Q: How do you feel about tomorrow?

WILLIAMS: I donít know. Itís only one hour after the match. I have to see how much it will swell

and how much I can do. Like when you first do something, the pain is everywhere. I guess I have

two injuries to deal with. Hopefully they wonít be limiting.

Q: - (not audible)

WILLIAMS: Obviously for me it is important to keep fit whether there was a French Open or not,

because Iíve been down and out for so long. So, there is no reason for me to go crazy and get hurt

more. I will not make any decisions right now. At this point, Iím anticipating and extremely

motivated to play tomorrow. So that should help with my physical condition.

Q: Will it be a short-term or long-term decision?

WILLIAMS: I twisted my other ankle a few times this season and was able to go on, but this one

seems different already. I have to see what it is.

Q: Do you see yourself and Amelie as the two favourites for the French Open, especially with a lot

of other players being injured?

WILLIAMS: Itís a tough season for the players. Mentally, Iím not at the French Open, I am in

Berlin. So itís hard for me to transport myself to the French Open. I guess probably I am the

favourite because of the good season Iíve had. But being the favourite doesnít necessarily mean the

title is handed to you. You have to go out there into the draw and play like everyone else.

May 9th, 2004, 06:48 AM
Stay healthy always Vee and you'll be back to Number 1 where you rightfully BELONG!!!! THREE in a row and a 15-match streak are but icing on the Cake!!!

May 9th, 2004, 12:35 PM
Venus had to withdraw from the final
but I couldn't be any happier had she
played and won!

She showed great heart and I hope her injuries
are all worked out by the French, with her play during
this clay-court season, she is very deserving!

Luv ya Vee!
Get well soon! :wavey:

Too bad for Veenus. I was hoping for a win, but still a great. Hope she will be ok for the GS.
