View Full Version : What really seperates Serena from everybody else?

Based on some of the reasons Serena fans listed as reasons why the admire her, I'm wondering which one trait we as fans admire most.

I know it's almost impossible to select just a few... I'm taking the multiple option away so everyone is forced to pick just one (originally had it so you could select two, but that didn't work...lol)...

DRATS.. I can't make modifications to the poll (at least I couldn't figure out how,)..lol. I guess it's a sign, ok all the above for me too-

Okay this was hard. I had to go back to why I love this athlete and this woman and I couldn't narrow it down to just physical strength or her charm, so I went with these two::

--> her intensity, desire, determination, and sheer will to be great

&

--> her self-belief and confidence in both herself and her tennis

I love Serena's belief in herself. I love her confidence. Some can take it as arrogance but inferiority complexes tend to turn confidence in others around into aloofness and arrogance usually. I appreciate and am awed by her sheer grit, her strength on court physcially, but also mentally. Serena just rocks and to be that strong inside is about the best sense and source of character I've seen in any player in a long time.

Thanks for picking just two. I had a hard time deciding on my second pick. For the first one I went with (her intensity, desire, determination, and sheer will to be great) that was a no-brainer, but I really struggled with selecting a second option. At first I went with her intelligence on and off the court, then I went with her 'game', but in the end I decided to go with her self-belief and confidence. I actually look up to her for believing so much in herself that's a truly remarkable trait and win or lose Serena is always ooozing with confidence!

I picked 2-5, but if I had to choose 2, I would pick

A) her intensity, desire, determination, and sheer will to be great
and
B) her self-belief and confidence in both herself and her tennis

because that's what makes her unique and sets her apart from the others.

I just realised that all of us chose the same 2.

I admire her confidence most, but what seperates her from everyone else is her game. There have been lots of confident players, lots of intellegent players, and lots of motivated players, but Serena's game was unlike anything every seen before. Her game was and is revolutionary so thats my main pick. I actually picked three her confidence and her motivation are the other 2. Its way too hard to narrow it down to only 2.

It was so hard to pick just which attributes that separate Serena from other players because Serena has all the qualities listed and each is as vibrant as the other and screams Serena. It's all part of what makes Serena special and one to watch or look for.

Thats exactly why I couldnt pick just two, sorry StefWhit. The list is perfect IMO because all of the choices combined sum up who Serena is perfectly. Thats why were all fans.

I'd say four and six. Serena's not afraid to be a star and understands that by transcending the game, she is actually exposing the game to others who may have never thought to watch. It's not enough to just be a good tennis player, plenty before have done that and that is just plain boring. Serena knows how to maximize and capitalize on her star power as well. She's very smart.

Yeah, i love how shes so opportunistic. She really does make the most of her celebrity and shes really charitable, always giving back to the community.

Wow, this is a hard question! For me itīs firstly and mostly: her intensity, desire, determination. I love it....whenever you watch her play, the come-ons, fist pumps, she letīs you know she cares!! And secondly her game...when sheīs on, itīs a thing of beauty watching Serena play...the serves down the line, the aces, the return winners, the angles, the speed around the court....she just got the complete package.

I really had a hard time picking just two. I ended up with:
her intensity, desire, determination, and sheer will to be great 7 25.93%
and
her on court game- feirce groundstrokes, booming serve, angles, and strategic play 7 25.93%

But, this was a close second:
her self-belief and confidence in both herself and her tennis

She is the ultimate tennis player and despite the trashing I'd get from Steffi fans on the GM boards, between us, I think she has the best game in tennis in history. She is the total package. She is a master of all aspects of the game and she has star power. I hope she plays for a very long time to add her name to the list of greastest players ever to play the game.

Shes already going to be mentioned with the greats, but youre right, if she wants to really go down in history then she just needs a long career. Everything else will fall into place.

OH noooo u didn'... (picture me giving you the 'hand', doing two snaps, and rollin' my eyez...) You do know that the "Stef" part of my screen name is for none other than Miss Steffi Graf? I think there's only two times in life I have ever rooted for Serena's opponent, both times she was playing Steffi...

Actually in this case I really do agree with you. Serena has more of a 3D game, whereas steffi was very limited. Serena can improvise and adjust her game a lot better than Graf could- Serena has both offensive and defensive plans to help her 'take care of business'. Steffi, on the other hand, was stacked heavily on the offensive side. (I think I'm going to start a Serena-Steffi Thread and disect how their games stack up to each other...thanks for the inspiratation- N-E-WHO...). While I wont comment on who would beat who at their best (I'll save it for my Steffi-Serena thread...coming soon...lol), I wold say that Serena has a more complete game. Arguable she is one of the most "Total Packages" the tour has ever seen....

Most of us picked "her intensity, desire, determination, and sheer will to be great" as the number one reason for being a fan and as usual that aspect of her game was on full display in her match against Kirilenko (in the 2nd round). I just love her competitive spirit and I'm completely sold on the idea that believing leads to acheiving and Serena is a perfect spoke person for that old saying...

I noticed that "her wit, charm, and personality" and "how she conducts herself both on and off court" are the two options selected the least. For the record I don't think I picked either of those two, although I must say that those traits are definitely there and in BIG SUPPLY. I think for the most part, it takes people just a little longer to appreciate those types of qualities. After a little thought, the only logical choice would have to be "All of the Above"....

Serenas confidence in herself is what I love most about her. What pissess me off is that these moronic commentators seem to constantly put her down for it. Its a okay when Roger Federer and Sharopoverated have confidence, but they thumb their nose up at Serena if she displays any of it. This womans confidence in herself when noone else believed in her is what made her a champion and is what will make her a champion again, IMO.

For me, I didn't pay too much attention to that because it's already part of the Serena package. Her wit, charm and personality along with how she conducts herself off and on the court are things that come with Serena and are so much apart of her that sometimes I even take them for granted. It becomes an almost, 'I already know these things about Serena', type of deal. Her on court traits, which in 2005 we've found are very important to some to the point that they might as well be on court helping the girl. Her personality off and her charm are extras, surprises that just add to what originally attracted so many and for others it has taken time, charity events, even Letterman, or even a smile to let them see under the determination and fierce attitude that makes her the WTA's Diva.

To be honest, Serena's game is not what attracted me to her. There are plenty "better looking" games out there, but the one single thing that she will be remembered as the greatest ever for, is her will and determination to ultimately win. She is the greatest player ever - man or woman to have such a fierce fighting spirit. It's amazing. :worship:

She just wants it a little more than everyone else. Of course with the French, sometimes her wanting it so bad can cause her to get too nervous, but put her in a French Final and I guarantee she'll win- even against the great Juju. The trick is finding a way to get her back there, but if determination and self-belief counts for anything then I think she'll get one more before it's all said and done.

I agree. She just needs to get into the final.

I'm actually hoping Serena faces Juju in the final of the French :bounce: ALL the pressure will be on Juju! Then, when Wimby rolls around, I think Justine will feel so much pressure she likely wouldn't make the final.
