View Full Version : Amelia Island Round of 16 Predictions

Below, please find the round of 16 at Amelia Island. The players whose names are bolded are the ones I expect to win.

Justine Henin-Hardenne (1) vs. Conchita Martinez (16)
Considering Justine's first match and Conchita's somewhat solid play leading up to her 700th career victory, this would be considered a toss-up, but I expect Justine to previal, unless she serves like she was serving last night, then maybe Conchita has a chance.

Patty Schnyder (12) vs. Vera Zvonareva (8)
Patty is pretty good on green clay having beat Serena and Jennifer on this same surrace two years ago, but Vera is just as good on clay. However, Vera almost lost to Tina Pisnik due to her shaky serving and because she can be hot and cold, if Patty plays well, she can win, so I will give Patty the edge here.

Amelie Mauresmo (3) vs. Barbora Strycova
Barbara took out a pretty good clay court player in Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi today, but Amelie is so much better than Anna overall and really don't see Amelie having a problem here and should win in striaght straights.

Silvia Farina Elia (10) vs. Jelena Kostanic
Silvia had an easy win on Paola Suarez' doubles parnter, Virginia Ruano Pascual, today and Jelena, via a retirement by Elena Dementieva, has the mjaor upset of the tournament so far. Because I really don't know that much about Jelena, other than she had trouble, at times, holdling serve today, I will give the edge to Silvia to win.

Ai Sugiyama (6) vs. Paola Suarez (9)
Paola is pretty good on clay and I wasn't impressed by Ai's win tonight. Ai could have easily lost in striaght sets had she been playing a better player and Paola could be the person to cause an upset so if Ai's serving doesn't get better, Paola will win in straight sets.

Alicia Molik vs. Lindsay Davenport (4)
Alicia's had solid wins here so far, but Lindsay's win was solid too and is a top ten player and since I don't know that much about Alicia clay court record and I do know Lindsay's, I will give the edge to Lindsay to win in striaght sets.

Nadia Petrova (7) vs. Petra Mandula
Nadia, like Vera, can be hot and cold, but unlike Vera, can be prone to injury at any time. Petra is one of those sneaky players that can play good when you least expect it. Having said that, if Nadia can hold serve, I think she will win in straight sets, but if she can't, Petra might just have a chance at the upset.

Karolina Sprem vs. Serena Williams (2)
I don't think they have played before, but based on Serena's continued sucess after her 8 month layoff, I expect Serena to breeze though in staight sets, but if Serena's movment and serve are off, she could have a three set battle on her hands.

My thoughts:

Justine Henin-Hardenne (1) vs. Conchita Martinez (16)
Justine had a rough first match. But that isn't anything atypical for the Queen of Winning the Points that Matter. Henin has creamed Conchi the last few times they've met and see no reason to think that will change here. Could be 2 close sets though.

Patty Schnyder (12) vs. Vera Zvonareva (8)
This is the hardest of the match-ups to predict, in my opinion. When Patty is on she can beat just about anybody on clay and she showed a bit of on-ness in her last match...so here's hoping that Patty keeps the good play up and takes out the Young Angry One in nail-biter.

Amelie Mauresmo (3) vs. Barbora Strycova
Amelie showed good form in her 2nd round match and her aggressive-spin game on clay should overwhelm the recently-hot teenager.

Silvia Farina Elia (10) vs. Jelena Kostanic
I believe the only reason Kostanic was able to stay close to Dementieva today was due to Elena's injury...Silvia should cruise comfortably into the quarters.

Ai Sugiyama (6) vs. Paola Suarez (9)
Hmmm...Paola is considered the better clay courter. But, if you look at last year's results, Ai had more success. Ai's been slumping a bit, but for whatever reason I think she will pull out of it and gut through a close one here.

Alicia Molik vs. Lindsay Davenport (4)
All depends on how much Lindsay's injury hinders her. Without any impairment, Lindsay wins this in two sets, 6-4 6-4 or easier. If her wrist is acting up, then we could see a better contest...but otherwise, these two play very similar games, only the Big D does everything a bit better.

Nadia Petrova (7) vs. Petra Mandula
Ah, another Russian on-or-off player. Petra has had pretty good success on clay (it helps her overcome her sub-par movement) as well. But as in the Davenport vs. Molik match up, the things that Petra does well, Nadia typically does better. Especially serving (last week's semifinal debacle aside). Petrova in straights.

Karolina Sprem vs. Serena Williams (2)
Serena has been showing us some pretty quality tennis. Not perfect, but more than good enough to beat all but the elite. Given Sprem's ranking and who she has loss to recently, I expect Serena to cruise. Here's hoping Sprem can make it interesting!

Henin-Hardenne vs. Schnyder

Justine played one bad match but I doubt she will do that two matches in a row. Expect an easy win.
Mauresmo had better be on her game against Barbora. I watched her play in person at the Hopman cup, she is very impressive and very charming too. She played very well despite tha fact that she was up against Lindsay, Amelie and Myskina all top tenners. ordinarily I will go with Amelie but a bit of rust could be a factor too.
Serena should win although I expect that this may a tough match for her, every player usually has one early tough match and this is it for her.
Petrova is beginning to live upto her seeding and should come thru. Suarez v Ai, Patty/Vera could be anyone's call. Farina elia advances to quarters.

(1) Henin-Hardenne vs. (16) Martinez: Even this match is for her 700th career win, its not going to come here, unless (yes, Justine is beatable on Clay) Martinez moves well, picks her point strategy and sticks to it for the duration of the match. Justine will come out swinging, and she's got a lot of confidence (hasn't lost a match on clay since '02 French ? (not 100% sure)), but if Conchita can stay focussed on her game plan, she'll pull it out. Unfortunately, Justine's just too mentally tough, to let this one get away from her.

Prediction: Justine in two tough, possibly three sets!

(12) Schnyder vs. (7) Zvonareva: Ever since Vera's upset win over the previous bridesmaid, Venus, at last year's French, people have been saying that Vera's really better than she is. Schnyder however, has been able to pull of the big upsets, Serena at Charleston in '02, but also been able to consistently play well on all surfaces. Schnyder is one of those players, who, like I said so many times, PLAY TO THE LEVEL, and sometimes above, HER RANKING. Zvonareva's been upset so many times, and almost got upset in Amelia against Pisnik. She's got to get it together if she wants to have better results on the tour. Patty should stay confident throughout and pull it out, so she can aim for a quarterfinal upset of Princess Justine.

Prediction: Patty in two fairly easy sets.

(3) Mauresmo vs. (Q) Strycova: This one is too easy to call! Mauresmo is on a mission, like Serena, to regain her spot as a force on the tour. The layoff and injuries, if nothing else, have motivated her to play better. Even though she had some problems in the second set against Morigami, Strycova's Cinderella upset over Smashnova compares nothing to the fight and determination of Mauresmo. If Mauresmo plays her best tennis, the only player who can beat her is Serena (remember she beat Henin-Hardenne at the year-end championships in three sets).

Prediction: Mauresmo in two easy sets, maybe one easy and one hard, but two sets!

(10) Farina Elia vs. Kostanic: Jelena Kostanic is playing great tennis right now, for her level. She came in, beat a tough German, and in the next round, upset the defending champ, who was injured (rolls eyes). I think she has the power to overcome Farina Elia, who in my opinion is going through a little bit of a slump.

Prediction: Kostanic in three tough sets (expect at least one close tie-break)!

(6) Sugiyama vs (9) Suarez: Even though the rankings place Suarez below Sugiyama, as of late, Paola, has been playing the type of tennis that puts her in SERIOUS contention for a place in the top ten. Sugiyama, has been playing poorly, and this tournament is a chance for her to turn that around. She and Clijsters won Roland Garros Doubles, so she knows how to play this surface, but Argentines and Spainards are CHARACTERISTIC dirt-ballers. This one will be tough, but I think Paola will win.

Prediction: Paola in three sets.

Molik vs (4) Davenport: I really don't want to post the prediction that I believe, because Lindsay is headed for upsetville. Alicia has been playing extremely well, and Lindsay has and injury. While she had a clean match against Sun, and pulled it out in two, Alicia has had a MUCH easier time getting to the round of 16. She's playing consistent tennis as well which is a big factor on clay. Lindsay's serve is MUCH bigger, but when she's injured, she can't move as well, and other parts of her game begin to fall apart. I truly believe Alicia can pull off the upset if she, like Martinez, plays consistent tennis throughout the whole match and doesn't allow the name of the person on the other side of the net, intimidate her out of her best tennis.

Prediction: Molik in three tough sets.

(7) Petrova vs Mandula: Petrova is a great all court player, and as of late, has been playing extremely well. I really don't think Mandula has the firepower to hurt Petrova in any way.

Prediction: Petrova in two faily easy sets

Sprem vs (2) SERENA WILLIAMS: The queen is back on the throne, and after eight months and a 38-3 record in '03, Serena is ready to return to '02 form. Karolina should be proud to play such a great player, and along with Kim, Venus, Monica, Martina (H. and N.), and Justine, a future hall-of-famer. Serena's got so much motivation. I really don't think that she'll be bothered much by the young up-and-comer. Sprem seves well, but Serena serves better. Sprem hits lots of winners, but Serena hits more. Sprem hits quite a bit of unforced errors, but Serena's hitting less, Sprem hits quite a few doubles, but Serena hits less. This match is a case of: anything Sprem can do, Serena does better. Sprem's game should play into Serena's hands, but I'm not above thinking K-Lina can take it to three and test Serena's match toughness.

Prediction: Serena in two sets, maybe a third if Sprem plays God-like tennis!

Justine Henin-Hardenne (1) vs. Conchita Martinez (16)
Considering Justine never plays well at Amelia Island, I think that this may be a tough match. Justine has lost matches she should have won in the past two years she's been in AI, but this is also one of those tournaments were she's been at the SF or better. Better yet, she hasn't lost any time before the SF in last year. But there's a first time for everything. Conchita may just be too motivated due to this perhaps being her 700th career win. But in the 5 matches they have played, only once did Justine have trouble with Conchita. Conchita has NEVER even taken a set off of her. Still there's a first time for everyone. Justine is #1 however.

Justine in 2.

Patty Schnyder (12) vs. Vera Zvonareva (8)
Everyone wants to say Patty's going to win. Last year, Vera had the 4th best Clay record.

Vera in 2.

Amelie Mauresmo (3) vs. Barbora Strycova

Amelie in 2 easy sets.

Silvia Farina Elia (10) vs. Jelena Kostanic
Don't know very much about Jelena but I think I've seen some results where she's upset some higher rank players. I don't know if it's going to happen here.

Silvia in 3.

Ai Sugiyama (6) vs. Paola Suarez (9)
Paola is a GREAT clay court player and Ai has not had good results AT ALL this year outside of Gold Coast! This is a toss up!!!! Because Ai is AMAZING!

Ai in 3.

Alicia Molik vs. Lindsay Davenport (4)
Lindsay's fitness has gotten better during the off season and I expect her to have one her greatest clay seasons ever. I don't know if tha translates into wnning tournaments, but she should do well here.

Lindsay in 1 tight set and 1 easy set.

Nadia Petrova (7) vs. Petra Mandula
Nadia is an inconsistent player and Petra is one of those players who takes advantage of a player who struggles and can be streaky. But I think Nadia has been playing well after having reached the SF of Miami and now being a Top10 player!

Nadia in 3 (2 tough sets and 1 easy set)

Karolina Sprem vs. Serena Williams (2)
I expect this to be a battle. I think that Serena is going on a high after winning her first tournament back. But Sperm is a very talented up and coming player. But I think Serena is quite determined to get herself in the final where she'll hopefully meet Justine.

Serena in 3.
