Mary had a +9 differential for winners-errors, but not good enough for Serena who had a +23 differential! 5 aces for Serena, 2 for Mary.

Mary

but Serena was out with a vengeance today :o ... obviously Serena is not going to let anybody stand in her way of getting her arms around the Hand :bigwave: in the final

I think Sprem and Petrova better watch out

Wow, they both played well! It's a pity ESPN isn't showing the early rounds.

I hope Mary gains some confidence from this loss. Even though she lost, she has to see that she played well. Her opponent was just too good today. Better luck next time, Mary!

Serena keep up that positive play! It will be interesting to see if there will be a Showdown in the final. ;)

Mary played well, but clearly was not good enough.

I think it's pretty obvious these days that athleticism is of the utmost importance in the modern game. Lindsay and Mary are excellent strikers of the ball, can hit the ball as hard as anyone, and having big serves, but they can't move very well and that will hold them back for the rest of their careers against the top players. At least they got some Major wins in before mobility became a neccessity.

Got to have some athletiscism....tennis isn´t just stand still and hit the ball.

I hear drums in the distance. Temperature is rising. The nr 1 wasn't convincing. The former nr 1 was. The jungle is full of whispers "Impossible is nothing". The fight is near.

Rumble, young girls, rumble.

You've got the flair for dramatics, huh, lilly?

It made me chuckle.

And it actually made me even more excited, which I thought wasn't possible.

Oh I know she played extremely well. I meant a better showing in that she would have went further in the tournament. At times like these I wish my faves didn't play until the finals.

We need drama. This could be a great rivalry. Great tennis and big emotions. Or it could be Serena again and again and again. I'm getting my hopes up on shrieks, a hand, fashion, fistpumps, moaning, disputed line-calls, glaring eyes, ripped earrings, hate etc. and serves, lobs, dropvolleys, backhands, smashes etc of the highest quality.

Ripped earings? That's a BIT too much drama for a tennis match. :p

I kinda was referring to moments when Serena loses jewelry on court, or they get "out of position". Adds something, don't know what, but something.

oh yeah injury time outs! *slaps forehead*

Justine has "blares" .... Serena "sprained an ankle" .... Justine has "cramps in all limbs" .... Serena "has to vomit her stomach out" ....

No, all we need now is for Martina Hingis to appear out of nowhere, go to the other side of the net, and point out a shot that was out. THEN it will be The Most Dramatic Tennis Match Ever Played.

Oh wait, we also need Venus and Capriati to have a staredown in the middle of the court. :D

Now I'm just hoping Justine will survive her draw and make it to the final to meet Rena. Frankly, I'm not sure the Belgian will get there. God knows how much I want that match-up!

Yes, apparently Venus and Jen had a staredown in their 2001 US Open semifinals match. Venus was ready to serve, Jen started to complain about something. Venus stopped and gave Jen an icy stare. Jen tried to stare back, but eventually she dropped her eyes. Someone posted a video clip of it a couple of months ago and it was hilarious!

Let's add modest clothing adjustments, hair style accoutrement penalties, heat-related cramping, tons of net cords favoring only one player, cursing of fans, some good old fashioned coaching from the sides, time violations and a few foot faults at critical points in the match. (I love this thread!!!!) That would be a fun match!!!

Serena doesn't need any excuses, you must have her confused with some other player(s) on tour.

So, anyone got the link for the video?

Good win Serena. I think she knew she had to put the goods in yesterday and when Serena is at the top of her form she is by far the best player in the world.

Mary should not be too disheartened though - she did play the best player in the world. Mary is still I would say like number 5 or 6 in the world, and I agree that her and Lindsay will find it hard to beat the top 4 or 5 this year. Athleticism is almost more of a weapon than pure power nowadays.

Mary is still great to watch though and I think she can still win a major tournament. Plus this match will show her how far she needs to go to get on a par with the very top.

So, explain to me?. Why do we all have to be such vicious ugly
enemies all the time? It's fun every now and again; but it
get's too depressing, and ruins alot of what could be good tennis
fun on tv. I'm not even speaking of the poor lurkers or fans of
other tennis players that aren't part of this bitter War of the
Warlords?

Shouldn't our enemy be Roddick/the ATP
and crappy tv coverage like ESPN or STAR?

I try to be civil, and all I get is ugly insults, and middle
fingers in my face? The hate and taunts aren't coming from
PHILISTINEs not that we're choco bunnies, or saints.
We've made a few mistakes here and there?
Hey, we're only human. We just don't like being shoved in
the corner with a knife to our throats up at GM everytime.

lilly
Apr 8th, 2004, 01:12 PM
ermm, the enemy is Roddick? *scratches head* I bet Serena really holds a grudge to him, and Ju-fans hate him as hell!

Well..I use to post up at CBS Sportsline and the old CNN/SI boards
and when Hingis was #1 the posting wasn't as mean sprited, crude
or rude as it is here. You'd think WTAworld was a World Wrestling
board from the looks of the messages on the forums.

I'm seriously losing my interest and patience up at GM. It's just
not fun, entertaining or worth the effort. My spirit has been broken.
I post once in a while up at GM; but I'll be more often found at
J-Time, tournaments or other places in WTAworld. I'm sure it's
not just moi that feels this way now.

OMG...I have this match on tape and its one of my faves to watch when I'm in the mood for a lil tennis watching...It was the first time I have even seen Venus really show "attitude"

I also love the two smoking backhands she hit that had Jen rolling her eyes
