Rafter top pick in WTT draft

April 7, 2004
NEW YORK (AP) -- Two-time U.S. Open champion Patrick Rafter was taken by the Philadelphia Freedoms with the first pick in the World Team Tennis marquee draft Wednesday.

Reigning U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick was chosen No. 2 by the St. Louis Aces, followed by Martina Navratilova to the New York Buzz.

Other draft picks included Anna Kournikova (Kansas City Explorers), Monica Seles (New York Sportimes) and Andre Agassi (Sacramento Capitals).

Rafter hasn't played an official singles match since December 2001, although he did enter a doubles tournament in Australia in January. He won the 1997-98 U.S. Opens.

The World Team Tennis season opens July 5.

has anyone been to team tennis?

I've just never "felt" it.

Seeing Rafter turn his back on the tour and commit to this event...... I dunno. its like a season long expo. All glitz, which is fine, but the model of teams and picks just doesnt seem to fit with tennis to me......... Id rather see monica dedicate herself to the main tour without distractions, unless there is a reason that she knows that she can't do that.

OMG!!! THE SPORTTIMES ARE 20 MINUTES FROM MY HOUSE!! I'm getting tickets for that at whatever cost necessary.

Monica will not be playing the whole season. 99% of the time these "marquee players" like Monica, Martina, and Rafter will play 2 or 3 matches, not the whole monthlong season.
