ESPN is probably kicking themselves about not having full week coverage of Amelia as there are many blockbuster 2nd round matchups to look forward to in the first few days, including Justine vs. Dinara and possibly Martina N vs. Petrova

But there is no doubt that the most anticipated matchup will be RG champ 2003 vs. RG champ 2000. Last time they met Serena won 6-1, 6-1 at RG 2002 but Mary was not fit then and Serena was on her way to winning the first of four Grand Slams in a row.

I really think Mary has a shot with the way she dismantled Meghann and this will be Serena's first match on clay since last year's FO. She has worked on her fitness in Amsterdam over the past 2 months and will be able to bang at the baseline with Serena.

Nike will also be watching this match with interest as its two style queens square off.
I predict Mary wins 7-6, 6-4. :bounce:

Love em both but I really think Mary's going to take this one. Mary's been holding out for clay and I think she's really ready to do some damage here!

mmm well Ashlyer beat Meghan on green clay aswell.
As Serenas just fresh from a title im guessing that her confidence level would be high.

If Serena can crank up her movement a bit, then I think she has too much for Mary to handle.

Serena. If she doesn't lower the standard of play, which in my opinion is probable.

Serena will be finished before Mary tries to fix her contacts, this is not Roland Garros 2000 and Mary does not have Robbie giving her encouragement, this will be exciting, I like them both but Serena 6/2 6/1

well, clay is serena's "worst" surface..
and she is still rusty ... I know she won last week but the rust wasn't completely off.

I think it will be an interesting match.. serena will have to be VERY patient..

but still I think serena will win it.. maybe in three.. while serena gets her clay feet under her..

Well, I saw Mary bitchslap Serena in IW in '00 (a LONG time ago, I know), so I know she's capable of it. All things considered, Serena wil probabably win, but I have to vote for Mary for old times' sake.

Hasn't Mary been practising on clay for six weeks? Serena for three days. Mary isn't as slow as she is often depicted on this board, and she's fitter and slimmer than for years. She definitely has a chance here.

Though this was on clay, it really says something when you bitchslap Meghann like that. Mary looks like she was freaking on fire today. This matchup reminds me of when Mary played Jenn late last year. The last time they had played, Mary lost 0-6 0-6. But then Mary comes out and takes out Jenn in straight sets. I think Mary will win, or at least take a set off of Serena and make it very close.

Mary 6-3 7-5 or....

Serena 2-6 7-6 6-4

ESPN. :fiery:

I wanted to see this match! I'm really torn about this match. I want Serena to win and continue her streak, but I also want Mary to have a great comeback. Judging from the scoreline, Mary played like an image of her old self and that's great! If Mary continues to play like this, Serena will have her first real test of the year. I just hope Serena will pull through as I really want to see the Showdown. ;)

She definitely has a chance here. How would you know that? Or it is to be assumed that Serena that because serena was playing miami she never got to a clay court. Same could be said about how the other 94 players at Miami had been pratcicing for a full 8 months before miami and rena jut a few weeks.
Serena has been very solid these last couple years on clay and only ever lost to Justine and Amelie, whom she also beat. I expect Serena to take ths form and fairly easily too.

I think Serena will probably win this match because clay or not, Rena moves better than Pierce period.

Mary was overwhelmed in Paris by Kim Clijsters on a surface that better suits Pierce's power game. Perhaps on clay Serena and Mary are equals but I am just not convinced Mary is the one who is gonna be the first to beat Serena this year.

Challenge her perhaps, but Serena I think will win.

I pick Mary, actually. Okay, maybe I'm slightly biased ;) but, honestly, she should not be overlooked in this match. She's been training these past couple of months for this type of match - although I'm sure she would have hoped for it to come later in the week.

WOW!! What a clash... and in a second round! :bounce: I only wish I could see it, but I won't get a chance

Here are my thoughts on the match, though: Serena comes from a nice win in Miami, she's been getting some rust off her game and I'm sure she's eager to do well on clay, too. Mary's shown some very promising signs this year, she's been working hard and her game's improved match after match. Her demolition of Shaughnessy - at least scorewise, coz I haven't seen that match sadly - proves she's in good shape and playing quite well, although we can't forget that clay isn't the best surface for Meghann... while Mary is a former Roland Garros champion, anyway. I have the impression that she's in the ideal situation to play Serena and seize her opportunities: Serena's just come back after a long layoff, this will be her first competitive match on clay - her least favourite surface - and only last Saturday she was playing on a hard court... while Mary's been training on clay for a good while and she's already had a good win in convincing style...

Still, if Serena can stay focused and cut down on her unforced errors - she did make a good few ones even against Dementieva - she moves better than Mary out there... and that can become a key factor on clay. I do believe Mary has some chances more than usual today, but I'd still pick Serena to win coz she'll never give up...

two of my favorite players

It would be nice if Serena won, but I wouldn't be upset if Mary did win. Best of luck to both players, I wish I could see this match! Regardless if it's a blowout or not for either player.

Go WTA!

I think that Serena is going to have to be somewhere near the top of her game to beat Mary. Mary can really be devastating to play on clay because when she has time to set up her groundstrokes there is noone who can hit the ball that hard. Any other surface and Serena would have an easier time. Serena is going to be rusty on the clay I think and I reckon Mary has been putting in the hours on the clay during her lay-off.

I think that Mary actually brings out the best of the top players - they know they have to be on top form to beat her. When Kim beat her earlier this year that was some of the best tennis Kim has played, and when Serena spanked her at Roland Garros that was the best Serena has ever played on clay. So I think Mary has been a little unlucky.

Mary is just going to have to overwhelm Serena before she can get her game going - that is how Mary destroys you. She hits loads of winners in the first few games and cracks her forehand off return, you lose confidence, she then just steamrollers you. That is just what happened at IW - Serena was just overwhelmed by Mary. But Mary has got to play brilliant to do that, and nowadays it is more difficult because she is not the only bighitter out there. But she is still probably the biggest hitter off the ground in the game - effortless power.

I think Mary overall is a better clay-court player than Serena. But logically Serena should come through. I would love to see Mary whip her ass though and show them all the force to be reckoned with we all know she can be. Wish I could see it on TV:fiery:

I voted for Mary. It might be more wishful thinking than anything else. Serena had her big comeback at Miami, now I hope Mary can have hers at AI. A shame they have to meet so early, but it may be to Mary's advantage that this will be Serena's first clay court match since last year.
