i mean, it seems everyone arund here is happy about Martina´s singles comeback.
and now she has already won the first set against Sequera with 6:1

Navratilova turns WTA-Tour more and more into a joke-circuit.

first she gave lessons in playing Doubles and Mixed, and now she
show the whole world how weak the standard on the WTA-Tour is.

i really respect Martina´s performence, but this is slap into the face for all who want more attention for the Tour and same prizemoney, and, and, and................

Sorry, but shame on you, for not respective the Greatest-of-all-time. It is not tour's foult if there is a woman who can win as much as she wishes. It is not the tennis' power that's low. It's Navra's standard which soars above the clouds.
PS: Sequerra seems to give her a fight now.

The only person who should feel shame is Milagros Sequera...

you gotta be kidding...she is the greatest of all time...the Queen remains the best!!!!

that said...her opponent is number 83 on the rankings...Martina should be able to hang with her IMO!!!

matthias
Apr 6th, 2004, 06:26 PM
i mean i respect her performence,
but i think it is a bad sign that a 47yrs old is still able to lead 6:1 against a current top100 player!

matthias has a point though. Let John McEnroe play against the ATP's no. 80 and he will go down 0-6 0-6.

You just can win on this board sometimes!

Alex gets a WC- bitching
Martina one of the BEST EVER in the SPORT gets one at 47- bitching

Let it go people.

John McEnroe does not have 150+ singles and doubles titles.

I agree with you, Matthias. I mean, Migaros Sequeras is a Top 100 player and losing to someone else who played only two matches in 10 years is joking! Nothing against Martina but I find it's not fair for all of her opponents get more pressure.

It's not Martina's fault. It's Milagros' (and probably other's as well) fault to suck that badly.

I don't see what it has to do with WTA vs ATP. Martina is still a woman. She is obviously an exceptionally talented woman, and very fit.

Could it never happen on the men's tour? Jimmy Connors reached the semis of the US Open at age 39 and nobody said it reflected badly on the men's tour. Bill Tilden was beating the top-ranked pros when he was in his 50s. Some people's talent really transcends age.

And I don't think McEnroe would lose 6-0 6-0 to #80 at all, even if he is not nearly as fit as Martina is.

If Navratilova does win this match, I say shame on Milagros Sequera. Losing to a 47-year-old is bad enough, but when she hits 100 on the radar gun and your best is only 98, it may be time to find a new line of work. ;)

Why can't you respect the fact that Martina Navratilova is a great athlete who keeps herself in great shape. As for schooling the WTA Tour in doubles and mixed doubles - do you remember her results from her first few years back. She has played herself back into shape and form and deserves the praise she gets, and win or lose this match, having taken the first set 6-1 she has as much right as anyone to be there.

Anyway Milagros up a break in the second so maybe she'll save the honor of the WTA!

Its silly to say btw Martina has only played 2 matches in 10 years. She was a top doubles player last year -- why shouldn't she be competitive in singles?

Anyway who respects the WTA tour to begin with? The average level sucks, that's pretty clear, you don't need Martina to show that.

Not really..... Johhny Mac doesnt train everyday of the year to play professional doubles, nor did he have the record that Martina has. Martina is argueably the best ever female tennis player. She has amazing hands, but more importantly, she has continued to train very hard and stay in TOP TOP shape. Why is that a slight on the WTA...... No one said shit when Jimmy Connors made the SF of the USO when he was 39:confused:

I would rather say WTA made a great decision to let Martina comeback, she obviously can play because she is ranked high in doubles. And today she just proves that she is just a double's player turned singles, not a comeback veteran.

Sequera :bounce: :bounce:

I respect all that she has done for the game and what a great champion she was, but lets hope this loss makes Martina crawl back into her hole...she took away a WC from a young player trying to make their way on tour...not trying to regain old glory...for christ sake go enjoy your retirement.

I can't wait till the day I can retire...they could never pay me enough to get me back to work.

I feel for Martina...its truly sad when people don't know how to let go. Now I understand why she is always hating on V&S...because they are not obsessed with tennis like she it.

Do you enjoy her doubles matches? If yes, then why are you stopping her from coming back to singles. Nancy is not any younger than Martina, and people were inspired by her courages. I think we should do the same to Martina. We havent seen any serve-and-volleyer for some time already since Natalie retired, maybe her entries here might make Natalie/Steffi want to come back. There is nothing wrong giving WC's to slam champions, why waste one on players like Sania who obviously are not ready for high tier events than giving ones to retired champions who can actually win events like Martina Hingis.

BK4ever, if you're so anxious to retire, you should find a job you really enjoy!

Anyway, tennis is not a job, it's a game, and a wonderful one.

It seems funny for people who spend 2 hours a day on the board (I don't mean anyone in particular, but just in general) to criticize an actual player for thinking about tennis too much!

It could have been a shame, but not for Navratilova. The lack of depth of the WTA tour these dyas is really sad. This is the match of the week. Sequera saved the whole tour.
