View Full Version : Zvereva, Hrdlickova, Rittner, Farina ... => German tennis league to begin soon !

For those interested in tennis in Germany around the summer, the local board "Sprechen wir deuce" presents the facts about the famous German tennis league taking place around Paris and Wimbledon.

It´s a team event taking place each year around the clay court weeks where singles and doubles matches are played and where each match the teams can decide wether or not an ousted top-player at a WTA official event could be called to improve the team. It´s so famous among the players because it offers great chances to get your form tested under match-conditions without the fear of losing ranking-points and the training facilities and the hotels in German cities should be good. For those who exit early either in Paris or Wimbledon.

Interestingly enough, among those who will play, are Zvereva who is living in Berlin right now, same as Peschke-Hrdlickova who did in fact not retire but is reported to have had a serious injury last year. If this means she won´t return to the tour is unknown. But it´s an info I didn´t find anywhere else on this board. Same as the fact that German talent Scarlett Werner who disappeared from the tour lately having had the talent to be a top200 player at least will finish school these days which is a sign she might try it full-time on the tour later this year. Kandarr takes a break in her studies to return to the league.

Among others, Germany´s former top100 players of Muller, Lamade, Glass and Arn return from retirement or challenger form to this format, Muller and Lamade might return "in style" to try it once again for the big tour.

If you read the names of those who declared themselves available for team matches, it´s quite interesting:

Sanchez Lorenzo, Pratt, Schwartz, Leon Garcia, Torrens-Valero, Rittner, Barna, Cervanova, Weingärtner, Callens, Garbin, Roesch, Peschke-Hrdlickova, Zvereva (!), Rittner, Werner, Kleinova, Farina Elia (!), Schruff, Muller, Likhovtseva (!), Schaul, Svensson (!), Flipkens, Klösel, Sucha, Kandarr ...

There´ll be 6 playing days, 6 week-ends that is, which isn´t too much and which could be interesting for those going out in the tournament weeks early.

Hopefully, some of you got some new infos :-)

This sounds so cool and fun. Do they have a website and info
where we can follow the games? How about pics? It would be
highly appreciated if those who are lucky to attend the matches
give us nice reports etc..

Wow! Natasha Zvereva!!!! Playing on clay! :)

There´s a link in the German section of WTAWORLD.com but it´s a German one. There might be pics on each of the team´s page whatsoever but I haven´t checked.

Farina is in this due to the fact she might get out early in either Berlin or Rome and plans on getting more matches and more praxtice.

It´s always that these kind of top15 players are named as ´available´ but don´t necessarily play in any of these matches. Think of Elena´s routine of reaching doubles finals together with Sveta, she won´t make it either.

But it´s a bonus they get for making themselves available and train under great circumstances if they leave Berlin or Rome or whatever and have 2-3 days with other top players getting paid for just 1 match (each week, one singles, one doubles for each player).

Regarding those who saw Zvereva, Hrdlickova-Peschke or German players like Arn, Begerow, Kandarr or Glass in it ... I seriously doubt this means more than just "fun" for them. Especially regarding the Germans. There are a lot of girls like in the past Claudia Kohde-Kilsch or Wiltrud Probst that were top40 players and returned to the German league just for having fun being competitive again. They won´t return to the travelling again. As Zvereva is reported living permanently in Berlin now, she has some home matches and only just 3-4 matches to travel within Germany, so with some fellow players travelling by bus, car or train is just fun - and we all know that she likes the fun :-) I doubt she´s willing to return for something like Athens or whatever and team with Arantxa. This idea came to my mind earlier. Natasha and Arantxa has the COMEBACK team of the tour for just one season due to the Olympics ;-)

Play starts May, 7th till June 6th, most matches are played on Friday/Sundays.

7th of May Fr Berlin week
9th of May Su Berlin week
14th of May Fr Rome week
16th of May Su Rome week
30th of May Su middle of FO ; 2nd week Roland Garros
04th of June Fr end of FO ; 2nd week Roland Garros
06th of June Su end of FO ; 2nd week Roland Garros

This means players like Farina Elia could play the final 2 rounds f.e. if not reaching anything near the quarterfinals of the French.

Sorry to disappoint you but Arantxa won't team up with Natasha... it's Anabel Medina Garrigues.

Steve, you better cheering Silvia if she there, of course! :yeah:
