View Full Version : With Davenport skipping Olympic doubles, are the 2 doubles teams set ?

Serena/Venus will definetly play if going to Athens, with Lindsay limiting to singles, Martina/Lisa could do whatever they want - theyīd play. But why is Martina then playing singles on clay anyway if she does not need to do great things in doubles if the "race" in doubles is no longer a race ?

The Olympic stuff is definetly a "no race" right now ...

Serena, Venus, Lindsay set for singles
Serena, Venus, Martina, Lisa set for doubles

5 girls

1 spot left open for singles (6 could go), that will go to either Jenn, Monica or Chanda, but Iīll go for Jenn in this one if Monica wonīt return before the French

All three of them, Jenn, Monica, and Chanda would love to go, especially since it is most likely there last try.
I think it's gonna be Jenn.

I don't think Venus' place is secure yet. Apart from LIndsay, Serena and Jen, Chanda is also above her in the rankings and Venus hasn't won a tournament since Antwerp 2003. Venus is defending Champ but Jen and Lindsay are also Olympic Champions. If Venus' form doesn't improve over the next couple of months, Zina may have a difficult choice to make.

RAYMOND/NAVRATILOVA are playing Fed Cup so i guess they are the only team going for it! Not very impressed by them lately ... i would pick SHAUGHNESSY/RUBIN instead!

I donīt think the choice is difficult. Venus as the defending champion is a MUST GO for Zina. Definetly. Imagine Serena without Venus in Athens. That wonīt happen. Not sending Venus would also ruin them as a doubles team. If they go, theyīll go both. And if choosing Jenn or Monica instead of Venus, all 3 donīt have a form right now.

It doesnīt matter really...īcause we all know whoīs gonna win the gold medal in doubles anyways.

I agree with you that on current form Navratilova and Raymond aren't certain picks either. Davenport and Morariu have been the best US team this year, easily. The only problem I have with S + V being picked is that they haven't competed in a tour event for so long that it seems a bit unfair for them to swan in and get Olympic places.

Well, when you can win doubles GS-titles at will.....people gotta go with you. The way it is....these girls play plenty crunch and brunch tournaments, but itīs the big titles that matter....and has been a long time ago that both Martina N and Lisa R have won anything big.

I remember Atlanta 1996 with Jennifer as the defending champion. She just made her brilliant comeback and was about 24th in the world with I think Lindsay, Serena, Venus, Chanda in front of her in the rankings. A similar situation to Venus these days but the USTA or whoever refused Jennifer to go. :fiery:

NO ONE has been picked for anything as yet. I'm told the decision will be made towards the last week of JUNE 2004. Obviously a lot can occur between now and then. Unless there is some serious drama on the tour between now and then, Venus AND Serena are both locks for singles and doubles in Athens.

German boy, there is no way that Venus or Serena was ranked 24th in 1996.
Neither of them even play a full schedule until 1998. Also Venus was ranked in the 60s when she made her run at USO in 1997. So Chanda and Lindsay may have been ranked ahead of Jen, but if she was #24, Vee and Ree were not. and Lindsay won the gold, so....

As much as I love the sisters, fairness should prevail. However, they choose to look at outcomes and probability, hence V/S....but Davenport and Morariu/Meghan and Chanda should sure stand a chance.

or is it three? Please correct me so...

Right, it was the time of Mary-Joe Fernandez, Lindsay and Monica. Mixed it up! Sorry! Venus and Serena are on the tour for such a long time, so I mixed 1996 and 2000.

WINNING is all that matters and the Williamses GUARANTEE that.

They may well be the strongest doubles team Bandabou but they have got to prove it NOW. It's impossible to argue they're currently the strongest when they haven't played as team since the Aussie Open 2003.

But what other American team has proven it?! When was the last American team to even win a major or tier I besides the Williamses?!

Rankings donīt tell a thing.....just a way to make up draws.

Hehe yep. I have not checked out the complete rankings in awhile but when I did, there were two ranked in the top 1000. They are ranked way down of course but they were there.

Good for them.....although Iīd tell them that baseball or volleyball is a safer bet for a Cuban to succeed.

Jennifer is definitely eligible. She only has to make herself available for Fed Cup, which she did last summer and was not picked by BJK.

This is 100% WRONG!:fiery:

The rules state that you must have played or made yourself available to play Fed Cup 2x between the last summer Olympics(2000) and this summer's Olymics. Jen played in 2001, and was to play in 2002 when dumptruck--I mean- BJK kicked her off the team. She also made herself available to play in 2003, and Zina said last week in Miami that Jen wants to play Fed Cup this year, and she wants her to play as well. So Jen is DEF. eligible!

Woe beide Zina Garrison! Oh the chaoices that must be made, the injustice of it all. How can ANY woman be expected to lead a team to Olympic Gold when the fifteh highest ranked singles player available is .. Venus Williams.

How can youeven FIELD a doubles team, when you r third best otpion is Shaughnessy Rubin?

Zina has THREE Olympic Gold medalists available. One of them ISN'T playing singles.

Corina and Lindsay are for sure the best team this year, they are # 3 in the championship race. I thought I read somewhere that Lindsay only wanted to play singles in the Olympics though, but I'm not sure. I hope she would play doubles though...Lindsay and Corina have a good shot, that would be awesome for both of them.

Surpisingly enough though Cuba has done pretty at least in Fed Cup since it first competed in the event in 1991.

They actually have a 41-16 record and I guess even though we don't see the players on tour too much, the team seems actually better than many of the Central and South American and Carribean teams that compete.
