View Full Version : What Will Venus's Year-End Ranking Be?

I'm just curious to what you all think.
Obviously, I'm biased. Some are in the other direction as well. But for those who could care less, what do you think Venus's year-end ranking will be, and how many tournaments do you think she will win?

Realistically, I say 4th, with 4-6 tournaments.

I don't see her back in the top 10 before the year is over.

Well, I honestly, I don't see her winning any tournaments this year. She has yet to impress me. I think your top 10 will look something like:( in no order)
Justine, Serena, Kim, Lindsay, JCap, Amelie, Anastasia, Elena, Nadia, and maybe kuznetsova.. not sure about space #10, but I think all those girls will keep her out of the top 10, and between the first three, I think they will keep Venus from winning a title

She will get into the top-10, perhaps even top-5 (will be on 5 spot in that case). She's already playing on top-15+ level.

I think below top 10 maybe around 12 or 13. But by this time next year i reckon top 10 again, maybe top 5.

Actually, Venus impressed me somewhat in her first match. She made errors, and her first serve wasn't too good. But everything else was solid. Her forehand was great (well not great, she made a lot of shank errors, but when she hit it properly it was spectacular) and I think she played better than Serena has so far.

But since that injury she has just gotten worse. Up and down. However I think its kind of rediculous to think that someone who's such a champion would just go a full year out of the top 10, just my 2 cents.

Well if she were to play like a champion then maybe she would make it, but I just don't think so, sorry it was my opinion. You don't have to call it rIdiculous. I respect your opinion, you can respect mine. I just don't think Venus is playing at top 10 level. Her forehand and second serve are hideous!

She should end the year in the top ten because as I stared before, all the players who did well in her and Serena's absence now have to defend those points and keep in mind that Venus has zero points to defend after Wimbeldon. Other than Venus and Maria Sharapova, I don't see anyone else ranked 11-20 getting inot the top ten before the end of the year.

Wow! You can communicate all of that with just a "stare"? LOL.

Luckily for Venus, she only has to get to the QF at the French, to not lose points. But she has to get to the Wimbledon final in order to not lose points. The US Open will just be free points.

It remains to be seen how Serena and Venus will hold up once they start to play more often, if they do play more often. How will their bodies hold up?

I can see Serena in the top 5 again, but I don't know if Venus will make top 10. I'd say 10 or 11 by year's end, at best. You've got players like Lisa Raymond beating Venus, so how likely is it that she even makes a final. Also, we don't know what the draws will look like at some of these slams. Venus might have the misfortune of drawing Serena in the Quarters of Semis of some tournament, and it's highly unlikely that she'll challenge Serena in a match.

She hasn't gotten worse,
just irratic!

First and foremost for Venus is
keeping the injuries at bay!

If she can do that she'll
have half of her work done!

Second, just to become more consistent!
She has been stringing together a couple
of good matches and simply needs to extend that.

Third, staying positive!
She's not getting down on herself and is not allowing
anyone else's opinions influence how she know she feels!

I think she'll be fine!

Also, let's not forget that Venus only has THREE tournaments left
in which she has any points to defend.(albeit two of them being Slams).

She's at 16 now and if she can defend her points(Warsaw-F, FO-4th, W-F) anything besides these three tournaments is nothing but gain for Venus!

So, IMO her main issue for the time being is health more than really anything!
I pray she can keep up her health!

I personally wouldn't count Venus out of being in the top ten, five, or higher.
No one knows what the next few months will bring as things in the WTA are known to turn on a dime!

If you look at where the top 10 starts in points it doesn't take much if she can repeat her FO performance or better at Wimbledon and the USO. Question is will she get better and get that far and how she will do if she hits the hot up and comers before the QF.

There are players still in the top ten like chanda, Elena, Ai who haven't done much either this year. Actually it is Justine who has made alot of noise, lindsay, kim and Myskina made some too but the rest of the top ten have been filling up the top ten. I fully expect Venus to end it in the top five.

People keep saying that, but that forehand and that second serve brought her four grand slam titles and a 35 match winning streak.!

Venus obviously is capable of doing much better than she has done so far.
Therefore her position in the Race to the Chase doesn't tell a lot, but still, she's only in position 21. Hell, Serena already is ahead of Venus playing just one tournament.

Fairly simple, it's time for her to start improving or she won't make the top 10, but apparently I expect her to do so as I voted she would make the top 10.

Just because someone is not playing well now does not mean they will stay like that for the whole year. For those who havent been following tennis long, player's form does not stay the same all year. It almost never does.

Itīs just hard to see a player like Venus not re-entering and staying in the top 10 again. Itīs just a matter of time. Venus is bound to improve on her current form...top 10 for sure. No disrespect to Chanda, Ai or I donīt know who....none of them is better than Venus. But Venus gotta pick it up soon, thatīs for sure.

Top 5 if she stays uninjured and plays enough events (at least 14-15). I expect her to start playing better with practice (not that she's playing bad at the time - all the oponents she lost to were good players). Top 3 is almost impossible at this time - I believe it will be Justine / Kim / Serena (in random order) by the end of the year if nothing drastic happens to those players.

Apr 5th, 2004, 09:33 PM
The key to Venus' year-ending ranking is definitely staying healthy. If she stays healthy she canonly improve and since she doesn't have any points to defend after Wimby, as long as she plays she'll improve her ranking.

For Venus not to make at least top ten by the end of the year, she'd have to lose early at Wimby or not play at all and not play more than a handful of tournaments the rest of the year. She's #16 right now; it's not that far from top ten, is it?

She just has to be able to stay healthy and to actually turn up for tournaments and her ranking will look a lot better by year end.

About Venus's Second Serve and Forehand, it's funny because they've gotten a lot better, it's just that when she plays poorly, they aren't good.

But when she's playing half way decent, her forehand is better than all but maybe 2 people and her second serve is better than a lot of player's first serves.

Venus will be fine you all. And it's really crazy to think she'll slump all year long. She's a four time grand slam champion, not Anna Kournikova

Interesting to read the posts from when this thread started and now, seeing that she is definitely knocking on that top 10 door and her hot streak...who knows?! She may shoot up to as far as she can possibly go by the end of the year! After WB, she has nothing to defend...and that's usually her most successful time of the year as well. WE SHALL SEE!!! ;)

3-6 depending on Serena coming back fit or not, how many points Lindsay can add, if Momo recovers and if Venus has off days at the GS against hot players. Better if the top two are sick or injured for long.

I think top ten as well. She is seven in the race. After the olympics and USO she maybe 5 or so but she usually plays a limited fall schedule. I think she will be about 6 end of the year.
