Excuse my ignorance of skating rules...but i thought that michelle was leading after her performance in the long, with only irina to skate.

So, why did sarah beat michelle coming from behind her? I really don't understand...

Thanks to anyone who can help me...

I was wondering the same thing as on the screen flashed that Kwan was ranked 1 - bt at that time I thought Sarah Huge had the better score - it turned out she did and won.

It was the "Michelle Kwan Rank 1" that came up really confused me.

I'd be greatful for anyone who can help us:)

Irina should have won this if the judges hadnt fixed the short program marks.

then Irina would be 1st
Hughes 2nd
Cohen 3rd
then Michelle would be 4th

Long program is worth 66% .

so finishing 1st = 1.0, 2nd=2.0
in short 1st=0.5 2nd =1.0 and so on.

Sarah won the long program i got no qualms about that.
Irina 2nd in that but should now be champ as she won the short according to most experts as Kwan should have been deducted 0.2 in technical.

Michelle was leading overall as she had 0.5 in the short and was 2nd in long =2.5

Sarah was 4th in short =2.0 and 1st in long =1.0 (3.0 overall)

but when Irina came in 2nd in Long it meant Michelle was 3rd in long and got 3.0 taking hers to 3.5 overall.

Michelle was leading before Irina`s program. And would remain on the top if Irina received lower marks.

Thanks for the explanation eggy! :) :) It does make sense....it was just a little confusing for myself and others who like me didn't know how the scoring worked totally...

thanks again!

Just one more question tho sorry

If both sarah and irina finished tied on 3 points, why did sarah get the gold? was it because of the fact that she did better in the free skate which was worth 2/3????

CNNSI has charts and stuff

Apparently, the ISU wants to get rid of this scoring system.

The question is valid for the other reason. I don't see on which merit her program was better than one of Cohen. She should have been #4..

Thanks for the helping hand, Eggy!

ys, Irina really said that?

ys, I agree, Sasha should have won the bronze. Ive never seen a skater in medal position, skate so well and not even medal. Plus, Sasha has the cutest cat I've ever seen! And that should count for something.

I've been thinking the same thing.

Does anyone else (other than me) think that Sasha's Presentation marks were a bit "low"?

Who cared about Cohen, Cynicole? Everything is precalculated. It would be a blatant move for judges to put Kwan ahead of Hughes. They couldn't do that. But they really wanted to give Kwan last chance, so they put her ahead of Cohen, so if Sloutskaya would really blunder, that would leave Kwan #1. They really hoped for that.

The cat,

the article where I read it says that she shouted it to her coach in locker room.

Well, DUH!

You didn't need to explain that part to me.

Reminds me of Nationals a few years ago...when I first saw Sasha Cohen. I thought she skated better than Kwan there...but lost of course. They said Kwan's program was more difficult and that's why she won...but she fell on her butt, I think.
