I saw Klara play today and I had never seen her play before and I was really impressed. She hit some great shots at times, she surprised me with how powerful her groundstrokes were. Sometimes she seemed to lose concentration but still she played good:)

Hope she goes better in Hobart next week and then AO:D

Mathijs
Feb 6th, 2005, 09:25 PM
That's great, i'm happy about the fact the Klara has a MD spot :)

Klara has to play Silvia Farina Elia in the first round, which she can do, if she wins, a possible 2nd round ag. Smashnova is possible (take some revenge for the loss in the final of Sopot 2003, Klara!!), if she wins that she might be facing Sharapova in the QF...

Good luck Klara, i really hope you can go far here, and improve your ranking with some places :bounce:

I might have a chance to see Klara playing next week in Antwerp, i'll look to a Belgian Channel who'll show some live action of Antwerp... ;) :)

Just have watched Klara's match ag. Alicia Molik Live on TV, Klara lost with 3-6 and 4-6, but Klara got back from being 1-5 behind to 4-5 behind, pity she couldn't take her chances to level the match, and maybe even win the set.....

Overall played Klara well, but MOlik was just at some points to strong for Klara...., but Klara has played a great tournament in Antwerp, hope that she can continue her form in Acapulco next week, where she's the no.3 seed...

BTW Iveta Benesova was watching Klara's match, she sat on a seat at the stand where the spectators were sitting, i think that Klara and Iveta are really good friends offcourt :D, which is good cuz Klara and Iveta are my fav. faves.. ;)

Mathijs
Feb 19th, 2005, 04:27 PM
Klara has withdrawn from Acapulco, so no Acapulco for Klara nex week, i haven't found the reason why Klara has withdrawn, maybe an Injury but not sure cuz when i saw Klara's match yesterday, all seemed to be okay, so i haven't got a clue why Klara has withdrawn from Acapulco   (where she was rhe no.3 seed....)

Well I don't think Klara will easily walk into the final, i guess every opponent is tough for Klara to beat ;) Shahar Peer will be Klara's first opponent, it's gonna be tough for Klara, i hope she can win :)

BTW here are some pics of Klara visiting a hospital for kids with cancer (well if my Czech is good ;))

It's gonna be a tough match for Klara, cause Zuzi seems to be under steam and rolling and getting great support from the audience so far. Now this may change since Klara is Prague's home-grown favorite. They both could use the title after all their touring experience. Good luck, Klara

btw, found a nice pic of Klara and her crisp, clear and focused look ( ). Enjoy, YeMo.

Klara was not so satisfied with her performance after the match against Jugic Salkic.

She said: „My opponent played in qualification, so she was in the match-tempo. She played with a special style – she gave strokes to the ball and either she hit the court with winner or not. So I couldn´t get to the tempo. And I felt not so good before the match, because I am cold and I couldn´t sleep all night. But I must play better in second round against Chakvetadze, if I want to win. I never was before in third round in Rolland Garros, so I want to win. But it will be hard.“

Tomorrow's final will be tough one to cheer on: Safarova is leftie-on-the-roll, playing well on clay and winning really impressive matches in the past few weeks, Klara is the hard-working baseliner and a veteran in Rosmalen with many finals (6, including 2004 Sopot and Rosmalen), but no titles. I think this time I'll be rooting for Klara: she's got the experience and grass seems to suit her game. Good luck, Klara  You are a due a memorable title ;) .

1r - Nagyova, a beatable qualifier
2r - Beltrame is beatable, and Dechy doesn't do much after AO, so imo Klara can beat her.

I think Klara is going to win. King does not have enough support yet among the New York crowd to have a home advantage. And they will probably put them on a smaller court too. So the advantage will be less.

And as we learned today from Dechy, King is just not very good yet. So I do not understand what happened unless there is an injury that we do not know about. Otherwise, this was a tremendous missed opportunity because Klara had a pretty good draw.

I already forgave her loss to King at the USO, my good Czech friend told me this about the match and Klara: "If they play
against big favorit, they didn´t believe, that they can win. It is a typical czech character."

And about the match he told me this: "How I wrote you
about self-believe, it was the true. Klara never won the match in
US Open and she didn´t believe in her power. She lost the first
set against King, because she played very badly, then she won the
second set and she thought, that finally will play better, but in
third set she lost an important ball, when it was 1-1 in game,
and then she stopped believe herself. Then she lost 6-1 the set.
It was typical for Klara. Klara know, that she have bad psychic,
she visited the psychologist two years ago, but I don´t believe,
that she will be other in the future."

Good luck in Slovenia Klara, hope you can do well there :yeah:

Well Klara is playing this week again and she'll play the Banka Koper Open in Portoroz, Slovenia, she'll be seeded 4th and she'll play Sanchez-Lorenzo in the first round, very difficult match IMO, since Sanchez-Lorenzo is great player on HC. But if Klara might win, she'll play Lubomira Kurhajcova or Sandra Kloesel in the next round....

Northern:

Thanks for that analysis of Klara's performance at the US Open. As you know, I thought she would win because she has the talent. This is what makes her situation so frustrating. Klara may never be a slam winner, but she has the game to be QF'alist. It is her head that is getting in the way. She has just got to get herself into position to play up to her abilities.

Klara is meant to play today (last match on center court), but I dont think she will play as rain probably washes out the play :(

Well Klara has both won her first and 2nd round match, firstly she played on Monday ag. Maria Sanchez-Lorenzo which Klara won with 7-6 and 6-0

And today Klara won ag. Sandra Kloesel in 3 sets 0-6  7-5 6-3, have no clue what went wrong but i have read in the live score thread of Tuesday that Klara needed 24 (!!!) MP's to finish todays match , i really wonder what went wrong, possible sth went wrong with her mentally....

But Klara has won and plays in the qf ag. Roberta Vinci the no.8 seed, Klara has a serious change to reach the SF here, though Vinci can be a tough player....

This is what Klara had to say after the match: "The match was very tough for me, because her style of play doesn`t suit me. She moves a lot and returns very high balls. I quickly found a way to play against her, but I was not concentrated enough in the second set."

That forehand of hers can be a thing of beauty, as I mentioned in the Portorož Tournament thread (http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=194984), where I have also posted some photos I took today, I think the only difference between her and the top players could be her attitude on the court.

Here is the interview as promised:

Klara Koukalova: The best win in her career

She left the scene of the first WTA tournament on Slovenian ground with a huge smile on her face. Klara Koukalova, who had to work hard in previous rounds to even make it to the final, offered a excellent display to ruin Slovenian tennis hero’s plans for a triumph in front of the home crowd. Katarina Srebotnik had a chance to feel the fourth seed’s killer backhand. Brown-haired Czech player won her second tournament in her eight final.

The 23-year old player from Prague rarely smiles during her matches. She is very focused on the court and she is very animated, when she loses point. It is not rare that her racquet is thrown to the ground, because of her anger/frustration. But off the court she is a completely different person. The winner of hte first ever Banka Koper Slovenia Open is a simple girl that likes to smile and was very pleased with the title she won. She has already won two titles in 2005. Klara is trying hard to reach the top 30 as soon as possible, which is her goal for this year. She made an important step to reaching that goal in Portorož, and she made strong promises to return as a defending champion to the »city of thousand flowers« next year.

Q: You defeated Katarina Srebotnik in an exciting final and became the first winner of the inaugural WTA tournament in Sloveia. What are you feeling after winning your second title in your six-year career like?

A: I could not be happier. This victory in Portoroz means even more to me than my first title in Hertogenbosch. This final against Katarina was the hardest final I ever played in my memory. I played in eight finals already (besides the two won titles, the other finals were in Palermo, Hertogenbosch, Casablanca, Antwerpen and twice in Sopot), but never was a match in my career so hard and exhausting. This was the best win in my career. I finally managed to win a title on a hard court as well.

Q: Katarina said after the match, that she cannot hold anything against herself, she left her heart on the court. She said you were just too strong for her in the final. What is your judgement of Slovenia’s best player’s game?

A: Katarina played excellent. She showed some excellent tennis with the help of the home crowd, which was responsible for a great atmosphere. Even though she made me work hard, I managed to bring the match to a happy end. I was very nervous before the match, because I suffered many defeats in previous finals. I said to myself, it’s now or never. And indeed, I managed to hit some great shots later and I managed to defeat Katarina.

Q: The final had a lot of turnarounds. What do you feel was the turning moment in your favor?

A: When I was 0:2 down in the third set. I decided there, I will fight with all I have until the end. I’m glad I did not give up then. I had a bit of luck as well. I don’t like to say this, but I was not pleased with some of the calls, but it was a dream finish for me. I kept my concentration until the end this time, unlike some previous matches in Portoroz, in the second round against Klösel for example.

Q: When you arrived on the Slovenian coast on the 19th of September, was this you first visit here, have you spent your holidays before in Slovenia?

A: It is true that a lot of Czechs spend their summer vacation in Slovenia and especially Croatia. My family never did, so this is the first time I visited a town on the Slovenian coast. The only place in Slovenia where I have been in the past is Maribor, where I won a ITF tournament five years ago.

Q: Have your goals changed after the victory in Portoroz?

A: Not really. I would like to become a top 30 player. And then I can set my goals higher and gradually lower my wishes (laughs).

Q: What about your grand slam performances?

A: That is my weak point. I have never played well on any of the slams. I will have to drastically improve my results soon (laughs). My best result was the third round two years ago in Melbourne. Australian Open is my favorite tournament, because of the great surface, sunny weather and nice people. Everything is ideal. But it is also true that I would like to fulfill my childhood dream of winning in Wimbledon, but that will be anything but easy (laughs).

Q: The Czechs have always had a great tennis school, with the likes of famous players like Martina Navratilova, Hana Mandlikova, Helena Sukova and Jana Novotna in the past. What the situation like after entering the third millennium?

A: There are eight, nine girls in the top 100. We are a small nation that has every reason to be proud of its tennis history. We also have successful male players, so the situation is solid.

Q: In the past the Czech had players like Ivan Lendl and Petr Korda, who were at the top of male tennis, but now there are no such stars from the Czech Republic. Is there someone who can replace them in the near future?

A: We will have to wait and see. Tomas Berdych is on good track, and on the ladies side we have a very promising player in Nicole Vaidisova.

Q: Has tennis retained the high popularity in the Czech Republic in recent years?

A: I’m afraid not. There has been a lot of talk about football, ice-hockey and also basketball and even golf in the recent years. Popularity wise tennis is around sixth place, which I don’t really like, as we are represented less and less in the media.

Q: Did you want to become a tennis player since you were little?

A: Definitely not until I was ten, I enjoyed playing with dolls the most until then. My father changed the whole thing, when he enrolled me in a tennis school. And as it turned out I was better than other girls my age so I slowly accepted tennis as an important part of my life. My dad still follows me around today. He came to Portoroz as well and cheered me on with all his heart.

Q: Will you return to Portoroz next year?

A: Of course. I adore Portoroz. I fell in love with it soon after arriving. I will recommend it to other Czech tennis players as well. Unfortunately Nicole Vaidisova, who is currently in the US, could not come this year as she already entered too many tournaments in 2005. I hope she will find time and place in her calendar for next year. Nicole is my great friend, but I will have to face her on Tuesday in the first round of the WTA tournament in Luxembourg. The draw was really cruel. I just hope I will be able to get some rest from everything nice that happened to me here in Portoroz until then.

There is a mistake in that last answer, Klara is of course playing Iveta and not Nicole in the first round. I don’t know who made the mistake in the interview, the journalist or perhaps she was just too tired. :D

I will also be uploading some more Klara pics from Saturday today.

So Klara lost 6:3 6:0 in 48 minutes.
A quick recap:
She played well in the first set breaking Kim twice, unfortunately she only held her serve once.
Kim won the first two games, then Klara broke. On her next serve Klara had 3gps, but didn't use them and Kim used her first bp to go 3:1 up. Then Klara broke back and finally held her serve. But then it all stopped and Kim won the next nine games.
Klara really needs to work on her concentration, she plays lousy second sets.
Ah well, there is always next time. There is nothing bad in losing to Kim.
Next for Klara seems to be the Thailand Open (Oct. 10-16), a tier III. I think she is playing Philadelphia (Oct. 31-Nov. 6), and Linz (Oct. 24-30) next month, but I saw she was on the entry list of Hasselt as well, which is in the same week as Linz. But she is listed on the official site of the Linz tournament. Linz and Philadelphia are a tier II tourneys.
Anybody knows if she is playing in Filderstadt (qualifications possibly-?) or Tashkent next week?

Kinda expected it, but i am happy with this last two weeks, though Klara lost today...., Indeed and losing to Kim is no shame at all, Kim is on red hot form at the moment, she's really hard to stop after her USO win.

Pity there wasn't a chance for us to see Klara on Tv on ES in Luxembourg, but maybees i'll get my chance to see Klara on TV if she'll play Hasselt (i guess the Belgian TV will broadcast the tournament ;))

Yeah Klara needs to keep on working on her concentration indeed, i think that's one of her main probs at matches sometimes...

I don't think Klara will play at Tashkent, usually some players outside the top 50 will come there, doubt as well if she'll play filderstadt, since she'll play Thailand Open on oct 10, i guess she doesn't want to every week tourneys around the world (in Europe is better to play some tourneys back to back) and i think she doesn't want to have a lousy jetlag as well...

Most players commit to 2 tourneys in the same week, i don't exactly know which of the tourneys Klara will drop..., but i have a feeling she will play in Hasselt, but it also could be that Klara takes again rest between Thailand Open and Philly, i'll keep my eyes on the entrylist to see which tourneys Klara will play....

No tournaments for Klara this week, now she can finally get some rest, go hope for a day or two and finally get a chance to celebrate her second career title with her family.
She deserves it.

Klara is playing in Moscow quali this weekend, she is seeded first and plays against Pironkova in the first round tommorow. The rest of her draw doesn't seem that bad and if she shows the form she has shown in the past few weeks she could/should qualify.

Go Klara!

Well if I compare it to Kata's draw, who is another one of my faves, it is not all that tough. If everything would go according to plan Kata would play Bychkova in the second round and Iveta in the third, that looks tougher to me.

pfff Klara's draw is indeed tough, but she can do it, she's in form so i can see her qualifying, but i thought she would play in Bangkok next week instead of Moscow? strange, but i don't care if Klara can get more points in Moscow then it's fine with me...

Go Klara, just qualify baby!! :bounce:

I guess she is thinking it is wise to play a bigger tournament where more points are available now that she is in good form.
