“After several failed attempts to cut in front of Kim Dong-sung, Ohno drew attention of the referees with a ’Hollywood action,’ and finally won the gold medal. He should have won an Academy Award for his trick.”

"...prompting Ohno to throw up his arms — a 'cagey' move that certainly drew the attention of race officials."

This guy is full of it! ...... he ripped off that poor Korean guy! and so did the American corwd. This Winter Olympics is as unfair as ever! ..... i am glad the Korean team is considering walking out. The American did not deserve the medal ....... :( :( :(
Did i meantion Ohno has been accused off fixing races? ..... this guy obviously is dodgy...... and did not deserve gold at all.

Ohno---- “I just did my best, and I shined like a star.”

What?! - you make me sick!... star? .... cheat! :fiery:

This quote i like ---

.
“It is outrageous and unbelievable. The disqualification is a reflection of America’s distorted patriotism after the September 11 plane attacks in the U.S.,” said Sohn Joo-suk, 30-year-old employee at Daishin Securities.
“This year’s winter Olympics in the Salt Lake City are tainted with the hosting country’s ugly home advantage.”

(For those reading this thread, those particular quotes come from South Korea's "state news agency" Yonhap. So you can forgive them for being egregiously biased.)

yes.... just as biased as the American crowd..... and just as Biased as the decision made to disqualify the Korean.
I hope you can understand that not only Korean people are outraged at this decision....i am! :fiery:

I didn't say anything about my feelings about the race, nor did I make any presumptions about which people feel angered by the result.

The only thing I did was quote your source, so everyone could see who exactly made those inflammatory statements. :)

I think it is unfair on this disqualification, we all knew deep inside that people want Ohno to win because of that crash thing a few days ago. But to win it like that surely it is ugly. There are way too much controversy in olympics this year and it put it in the spotlight for all the wrong reason. The russians are clearly and rightfully outrage about their treatment here and Koreans must be really angry as well, there are no clear pushing and how can the referee disqualify a player just because some american can not find a way to get past to win the match??? I don't blame the crowd though, they are there to cheer for the home team and they succeed in doing so.

Feb 22nd, 2002, 01:47 AM
Yes ....... i can see that. Proud of yourself?
I woudln't exaclty call those statements Inflammatory...... mine were ......not the Korean media's. Anyway ..... god willing - this will all turn out like it should...and the Korean will be awarded Gold. ;)

V.Melb
Feb 22nd, 2002, 01:50 AM
Yes..... the crowd cheered for Ohno ...... and then Booed the Korean! :( ..... that infuenced the Ref's decision i am sure! :(
So i also blame the aggressive crowd..... The Korean crossed the line first! - at least be civil and congratulate the winner! :(
Isn't that what the olympic spriit is all about? ......not cracking the shits when your home town fave doesn't win. :( ...the crowd were not innocent IMO.

It is part of the same story. It is not Olympic Games. It is American Games and not everyone is welcome to win there. The only thing that can be done is not giving them any more Games until they learn that Games are about sport rather than about making money out of sport.

I'm always proud of myself! :D

I honestly also thought the DQ was dodgy -- I said so on these very message boards last night. I'm not complaining, because I'm a big Ohno fan. BUT I can see why they would have DQed the Korean...and the crowd doesn't DQ people. Line judges and referees do.

As far as I know, the ref is from Australia. So you can go find him and hunt him down when the Games have concluded. :p

Well first off I am a HUGE Apolo fan so you can call me biased if you want but here's what I have to say:

When I was watching the race and I saw that the Korean skater had been disqualified I couldn't believe it but after the race they read the definition on cross-tracking (I think that's what its called) and then showed a tape and from the angle of the tape, you could see that the Korean skater did cross-track so i dunno... i understand how koreans and korean fans are upset though...

I am sorry but when I watch the 1000 m a few days ago, Ohno did a lot of pushing (relatively to Kim yesterday) and he is not DQ (again he could have, just like you said about Kim) I think Kim deserve the gold medal but since he is not north american, there is no chance in hell they would appeal successfully LOL

And to add to the point, I am not a korean fan, I was rooting for China all the way, so I am watching from a neutral point of view (although you can say that I should actually be delighted for Ohno to win coz China is propel to second place)

I don't understand the rules  but if the judges are really biased, they should be sent to hell

Well, I'm glad Ohno is a good actor, his acting got a Canadian a bronze medal...;) haha. But honestly, I was a bit surprised at the DQ, but, it was a cross-track, so...and Gagnon, who was right behind them, knew that it would be a disqualification, and he had the best view and knows what he's doing, so...I don't know. It was a tough call though!

Oops, I don't think I was clear... it's late, my english becomes a little spotty lol... i meant did you see the tape, like the re-play, of the race where the korean apparently cross-tracks??

I don't know much about the rules, and it didn't seem to me to be something wrong during the race. So, I think the american boy did not deserve to win.
But the american has a bonus and that is salt lake. he is skating at home. I don't have another explanation for the DQ. By the way, have you watched halfpipe? Kind of same situation...

I thought he was totally acting up too, lol. The "shining like a star" line, was sooo cheesy..

Anyway, I thought the Korean should have won, but I wasn't cheering for either anyway...at least Marc Gagnon got on the podium :o

I saw it "LIVE"and The Korean guy cheated his ass off and thus lost the gold. Apolo won fair and square. It was so obvious that if it weren't for that crosstracking that Apolo had the Gold locked away anyway. I am sorry but I think the DQ was fair. these players know the rules and he broke em.

GO APOLO:) By the way Apolo Anton is gorgeous.

Fom what I saw - the Korean guy (appologies, but I don't recall his name) moved over to cut Ohno off.
Which is against the rules.

I saw the replay wuite a few times - and while I hate that a race is decided like that - it certaintly looked like he cut him off.

i don't really see what all the fuss is about

To be honest - Ohno kind of bothers me a little - but that doesn't mean he didn't deserve to win if the guy was DQ-ed for cutting him off.

Thems the rules.

Why wasn't he awarded the gold instead of silver after the controversial crash in the 500m race?!

I must agree that the decision to disqualify the Korean skater was a huge mistake. As an American, I was outraged!
The fact that the results can't be appealed is even more outrageous!!!

Hurley, the commentators on the BBC in the UK used almost exactly the same language as the Korean report Vixen quoted - because the DQ was so obviously unjustified. People on these boards have accused tennis players like Roddick and Medina Garrigues of acting up on court - what Ohno did was worse. The Korean guy was merely protecting his lane and didn't even change his course; it's yet another example of the pro-American bias exhibited throughout these Games. And, despite the fact that this is far less controversial than the skating result, what's the betting that the appeal - unlike that of Salé and Pelletier - won't be allowed?

Josh

He has a cool name though. :D

But I agree the DQ was not justified and the commentators on Dutch TV (yes I had to watch it there cause Belgian TV doesn't show much on the wither olympics) said it was a bad decision by the judges and that the Korean didn't do anything wrong.

There was a blatant cross tracking by not only changing his lane, but also changing the edge of his blade - which is totally illegal.

This skater has been DQ'd many times before because of this....

Unless you know the sport of Short Track, it's not fair for you to pass judgement.

Oh, and YS, you are SO DAMN ANTI-AMERICAN, it's hilarious!

You are so "ethical" about how to be so fair, but you hate the country, but sure don't mind using it's resources to benefit you!

LOL........what a hypocrite.

I dont know much about speed skating but it didnt look like the korean did anything wrong...he didnt exactly move a lot to block Ohno. I think i've seen the skater in front do that in just about every other race and and not get DQ.
It was a bit dodgy how Ohno put his arms up during the race when he realised he couldnt pass him, i think that influenced the referee.
Its no surprise anyway we know that americas always been partial towards their own athletes in just about every sport.

The official who disqualified the Korean skater was an Australian.

Apolo is so cute!

I think it was fair. I do think Apolo is charismatic and a bit brash, bnut he deserved it.

When I saw the explanation of cross tracking and the replay of it you could tell that the Korean definitely did Cross track. So if thats against the rulebooks, then I guess he should've been DQ'ed. The sport of short track is crazy to me though. It so crowded, no wonder their are so many collisions and pileups, and it must be dangerous during the falls with the blades.

I don't think Apolo did anything wrong. He just moved his arms up to show that their was cross tracking. I would've too if I saw something illegal happening. At first I thought he just didn't want to bump into Kim Dong-Sung, because he was scared of falling. So I don't think you should bash Apolo. Wouldn't you do the same?

"Why wasn't he awarded the gold instead of silver after the controversial crash in the 500m race?!"

The Australian who won the 500m race did nothing wrong himself. Thus, the person ahead of Apollo did not get disqualified, thus he kept his silver placement.

Everyone fell = Bradbury wasn't at falt there.

I can't help but notice the number of you who are saying " I dont' know about short track, but I know he should not have been DQ-ed and that he only was cause the games are pro american and anti everyone else " -
alright, no one said those exact words. But if you dont know about short track, then how the heck do you know if he should have been DQ-ed or not?

I still think that the "no contesting the final results" is OUTRAGEOUS! No appeals allowed. What kind of crap is this? I know, the same rule applies in baseball and a few other sports, but i really believe it is ridiculous. :fiery:
