India’s leading women’s tennis player, Sania Mirza has been awarded a wild card for the singles draw at the WTA Grand Prix SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem of Casablanca to be held from April 5-11 2004 at Casablanca, Morocco. According to the tournament organizers, Sania Mirza has been recognized as one of Asia’s most talented young women’s tennis player and she has been given the wild card to support her endeavor to reach the highest echelons of women’s tennis.

With this, Sania Mirza has become the first ever Indian woman to be given a wild card for a WTA tour event outside of the home country.

A much-elated Sania said, "I am glad I have received the wild card for this prestigious tournament. I would like to thank the king of Morocco for his personal interest and intervention in the matter. My recent victory at the WTA-ING Vysya Hyderabad open has further strengthened my confidence, determination and focus and I am now sure of playing to the best of my abilities."

Earlier this year, Sania Mirza created history when she became ‘The youngest Indian ever, male or female, to win a professional Tour tournament’ and ‘The first ever Indian woman to win a professional Tour title’ after her victory at the WTA-ING Vysya Hyderabad open.

She did split with Nicole Pratt which is an accopmlishment because Nicole did win the tournament but I don't understand why she is talking about her victory there. Anyone?

She won the doubles with Liezel Huber, so i assume that's what they were talking about. Although it woulda been nice for them to mention Liezel in the article.

She's better at doubles, actually. She reached final at Wimbledon in Girls' Doubles event last year.

Sania is not really sliced cheese in singles. Has rarely lost to anybody under top-400 in a couple of years though the top-300 wins have been rare for her..

Till this week, that is .. She just had two of her biggest wins, upsetting the top seed and the 3rd seed, #304 Alves and #276 Tiene to reach the final today at the Rabat $10K. In fact she took out Tiene by a 62 61 score yesterday. Looks like the girl likes it out there in Morocco!

Her being a Muslim also had something to with the wildcard, I would guess.
