btw we have a head2head vs top 20 players in wikipedia now, to be honest - from yesterday afternoon when I wrote it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsvetana_Pironkova

According to it (it's not that we did not know it before:lol:) the most awful nightmares for Tsveti must be Henin, Jankovic, Cibulkova and Medina Garrigues - so we can wish her to meet Cibulkova and Medina G. as they are not in form now and she can overcome this psychological obstacle.:lick:

1-6 vs Radwanska:help:
watching the numbers in this head2head...they made it sound even scarier:help:

It was pretty cool watching her at Wimbledon. As a quiet supporter and a big big fan of her for so many years (I still remember her dream debut SF week at Istanbul 2005 as it was yesterday) it was an emotional week (two weeks ago now).I do think she had luck with the first 3 rounds - but was it?With Lapuschenkova (rather dangerous this season), Dushevina (Wimbledon girl's champion and finalist at the second biggest grass court tournament) and Kulikova (who had her second consecutive 3rd showing at Wimbledon and have a top 10 win the seson)? The two wins against Bartoli and V.Williams ... or the two wins performed THAT WELL against two of the (maybe) top 3 grass court players in the last few years...WOW! :)
Bulgaria has it's champion now (and I'm pretty sure she will grab the Bulgarian Sportsman of the year award as there are now Summer Olympics this year). But there are just few who remember her loss at Miami last year vs Schiavone (showing great fight when recovering from 2-5 to 7-5 in the second set)...or her loss vs Bammer in Prague again last year (after leading 6-2 5-2)...or the tight two sets in Stockholm in 2007 vs Cohen-Aloro...
And, of course, the Wimbledon's feeling of great delight and absolute satisfaction.

Now we're hungry for more, Tsveti.Make it to the headlines once again!:lick:

Appreciate all the info, Goldddfish. Wimbledon was my introduction to Tsveti, and she's amazing. I got to see her finally and it was :hearts: . This looks like a really good draw (not sure about H2H), so a semi-final seems very reasonable, if she avoids a post-Wimby breakdown. Good luck Tsveti!!

Pironkova won 6-4 7-6 but the match was full of UE's from both side especially from Tsveti. I just haven't seen her make so many mistakes in a while. Nothing in her game worked and somehow she managed to win it. I think her back problem needs a couple of massages and I guess she will be OK.
But if she doesn't adjust her game she will have a lot more troubles on wednesday then today. I so hope this was just not her day and that's the reason for her full of UE's game. A reason might be the late match and the darkness but that's just a guess. Now she has a day to relax and maybe a few training to get use to the clay again because she felt a lot nervous today and not very comfortable on the court.

Tsveti's loss vs Craybas has it's explanation. She has some shoulder problem and she felt pain after the first set of her match which didn't let her serve well and hit the backhand as she wants. Now she is in Plovdiv and will relax and treat the place.

Her next tournament should be Istanbul.

Tsveti was awarded Best bulgarian sport player for the month of june by the bulgarian media today. She received 28 from 29 votes by all the sport press organizations.
She said that her injury in the shoulder she had in Palermo was not so big and now she feels a lot better and prepares for her next tournaments in Istanbul, Copenhagen and then New Haven and the US Open. She also said that now she is more motivated and more confident in her game but that has a lot more to train like the first serve percentage that she wants to be over 60 %, her forehand. Here is a pic which I found. Hopefully there will be more soon:

It's more like a summary to those shining suprises at the grass of Wimbledon that appeals to us to look forward to US Open as those three players can cause more upsets. But it's feeling great to see Tsveti on the news, despite the fact she has made no news (or pretty poor news) recently.I think I still keep somewhere a photo of the title page of the SEW website informing us that no.1 seeded in Rome and hot favourite for Roland Garros (then) was stunned by a qualifier.

It isn't a miracle. even before tseveti reached the semifinal at wimbledon she had pretty good wins against players ranked better than her in other tournaments

Pironkova has the ability and game to become a top 30 player. However, she plays better when she's the lower ranked player particullarly at big events.

Her problem are the lower ranked players, and the lower ranked tournaments. she clearly has the serve and the game to become a greater player because of her fighting spirit and her offensive game.

So for all of you who have been saying wimbledon was a mircale, it wasnt. she has the potential and the groundstrokes to be a great player. it is just the problems she faces against the lower ranked players. if she improves her mentalitty while facing lower ranked players i am confident she will definetly be in the top 30 with her explosive groundstrokes

It will be quite a miracle if she does't become a top 30 player with so little points to defend within the next few months as she is no.33 now.

And is it so prestigious to be a top 30?
I suppose Gisela Dulko is the most underestimated player according to the rankings while Aleksandra Wozniak should be rather grateful for achieving a near top 20 highest-career ranking with no achievements at all.

I am speaking generally and not just about her ranking after wimbledon. i mean that her game has always had the potential of being in the top 30.
Being in the top 30 means being ranked grandslams and many tournaments so that is great and im sure some players worked very hard to get there.

As of now, Henin, Ivanovic, Mladenovic and S.Williams are confirmed on the women's line, while Djokovic, Isner, Darcy, Monfis and Hewitt are sure participants from the men's side.

That is old information. It was written six weeks prior of the tournament when the entry list got. It is something like and excuse from Tsveti not to play it because she never does participate in those USO series tournaments except New Haven. When she reached the Wimbledon SF the interest in her has risen and of course the organizers wanted her to play in Montreal, there was even a person in the pressconference after Venus's QF match that asked her is she going to play there. She is probably on bulgarian sea cost now and gets the so much needed rest before the last grand slam tournament.

The bad thing is that today Kanepi won her match vs Shahar Peer and if she wins her next vs Bammer which is very likely to happen Tsveti drops to 34th place in the ranking which will most probably mean that she won't be seeded at the USO for just one place.

Phesto
Aug 17th, 2010, 05:59 PM
I have been trying to figure this out... if Tsveti goes to 34th, she could still get ranked at USO if 2 people above her don't play, right?

We know Henin is out; looking through the other players, the only other one I can see that might not play is Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez. I have no idea what her status is but seems like she hasn't played since Eastbourne (mid-June).

Yes it is true that if Tsveti goes to the 34th place in next weeks ranking there has to be one more player to withdraw from USO for her to be seeded. The bad thing is that I don't see such a player that is heavily injured for not playing the last grand slam. MJMS haven't played from a long time but she will play next week in New Haven so she is OK now. The Williams sisters are also injured but they are always for the little tournaments and will definetely play USO. And there is nobody else because all are playing now in Montreal. We just have to hope for a good draw like Wimbledon one.

Phesto
Aug 18th, 2010, 02:19 AM
Thanks for the info, Bulgaria; didn't know MJMS was playing in New Haven.

Agree on the Williamses -- Venus confirmed she will be playing in the US Open. Serena is supposedly still questionable, but I have a feeling she'll turn up there feeling fine.

ESPN just said during the Roddick/Djokovic match that Serena has withdrawn from the US Open. Can't find that info anywhere else yet, but they're talking about it on the Serena forum.

Besides opening up the entire tournament, this could give Tsveti the 32nd seed. Kanepi did win her 2nd round match before Clijsters sent her packing, but 34th should be good enough for Tsveti now.

The total slump in her game after Wimbledon continues with full power. This match today was once again a lecture of how not to play tennis in your prefossional career. With every single tournament her game is worse and worse and I don't know how to explain what's happening. She will be seeded for a first time in a grand slam but let's say it everyone is dreaming to draw her in the first round at the USO right now. Awful. but we have to support her because it's more difficult for her than for us. so just support her even now. when she wins she is marvellous but when she loses she's bad but if you like her you always like her, winner or not.

No one said that we don't like her anymore. That's never going to happen. I will support her every time she plays.
I know that she was mentally exhausted after Wimbledon but two months have passed since then. I don't know did you watch her match vs Lapuschenkova in Copenhagen. She played awful tennis then which apparently continues. Now she plays with no idea in her game, loses to some mediocre players which we know she can crush and that disturbs everyone. Yes she can't keep the form from Wimbledon forever but she can at least try to play as she did before that in Warsaw. The thing is that she is far from that too.
I so hope she will find her rhytm in USO as she is the 32nd seed and will have luck with the first round opponent. I so hope it is not Rodionova again. :help:

My gosh, Tsvetana :hearts:. She should dress like that last pic on court. Just kidding, but wow. About her tennis, it's been pretty bad (as has Kvitova's) since Wimbledon. I think about now, going into the US Open, would be the perfect time to stop slumping.

I can't see much from Voracova this year, especially on hard courts. Looks like she took Tsveti's nemesis Rodionova to 3 sets in Miami but lost.
Then it would be Hercog, probably, who hasn't been playing that great lately (either). Then there's Venus, once again....

Definitely a good draw for Tsveti!

Good job Tsveti!!! :bounce:

We couldn't watch it and I can't say how they've played but Tsveti served very poorly. As viewed from the statistics she has 40 % first serve which is very bad. Voracova like Tsveti is in bad form and maybe that helped. But I think vs Minella on wednesday will be a lot harder never mind that she is a qualifier and never won a grand slam match so far until today. She has to be very consistent and motivated. Good Luck!!!

about Minella...

She suffered a couple of bad injuries that set her development back, so it's not entirely surprising she's only playing her best tennis so (relatively) late in her career.

She's tall and has a decent serve. Otherwise, standard issue challenger level baseliner. Fit, but neither athletic nor fast enough to be a counterpuncher, and not powerful enough to be a power player due to having flawed groundstrokes. Pugnatious and determined though.

Next for Tsveti is Toray Pan Pacific, and then - China Open.I think it will be her very first trip to Asia-Pacific tourneys so...we should keep our fingers crossed for not to be just a trip.;)

I really hope for a decent run there as the top 25 is in about 400 points distance.:wavey:

I think her main aim for the rest of the season should be qualifying for the Bali championships, but she should have a title from an International series tournament - and she can only do it in Osaka, Linz or Luxembourg.Of course, she has different plans as she did for the summer season...

Because "she created" it just after Venus match. The buzz around her here and all over the tennis world just made some 14 yo to create it "for her". Most of her tweets are not even for tennis. I thought it would be easier but it didn't turn that way. Tsveti was trailing 1-4 in the second set and saved a lot of break points in her service games to eventually lead 5-4 when she was quickly broken. After that she won two quick games and managed to close it. She is still non constant, she made 6 DF's. On the other hand, Bulgarian journalists tend to forget achievements with time.Evgenia Radanova, Bulgarian short track speed skater, was only fifth in 2006 (though winning the only Olympic medal for Bulgaria in the Winter Olympics). And we have wrestlers and weight-lifters who are a way more "reputable" than tennis players. :help:

Well Tsveti won't win the first place because undoubtebly Stanka Zlateva will win it because of her world and european titles. I think she will be fourth most probably. A well deserved place. If she made something big after Wimbledon she could of fought for a better place but she was terrible then so she doesn't deserve it. You're absolutely right, I think a place in the top 3 is well-deserved, but maybe a little bit lower will be the real ranking. But I'm so sick and tired of praising athletes in those sports who get so lot praised (I'm talking about weightlifting and wrestling).Stanka Zlateva is internationally recognized as a champion (she was chosen the female wrestler of the year if I'm not wrong). But proove me I'm wrong that tennis is much more prestigious sport, the rivalry is much bigger and you ought to be not just an athlete, but an athlete with mind - and thus a semi at London's courts beating two great grass-players, beating the player of the decade, must be much higher than becoming a World Wrestling Champion.

Another interesting thing here - a poll in one of the most popular news-websites in Bulgaria http://www.dnes.bg
What was the most important event of the year?
Tsveti's semifinal is second with 26%, losing only to Kristalina Georgieva, a member of the European commission and chosen as the commisionner of the year (27%).Personally I think Georgieva is much more important, but, again about sports, it's a lone sports event this year that was followed with so much interest - it was Tsveti's semi that was broadcasted in malls, restaurants and so on, and so far.We were all united by Tsveti's semi, not with Zlateva's medals. :)

Yes it is true that tennis is much more popular and Tsveti was all over the news after she defeated Venus and everybody was talking about her and Bulgaria but you know how journalist are around here and not only here. The medals count. Stanka won an european and a world title, was anounced best female wrestler in the world for third time I think and is a pottential olympiad gold medalyst. A lot of bulgarians love her, such as me. She is such a sweet girl and deserves it. Yes Tsveti made that Wimbledon semifinal but we can't think for N1. As you say N3 will be perfect. Let's hope she will make it and not being all wrestlers top 3.

I think the top 5 will be:
1. Stanka Zlateva (Wrestling)
2. Matey Kaziyski (Volleyball)
3. Tsvetana Pironkova (Tennis)
4. Dimitar Berbatov (Football)
5. Vladimir Nikolov (Volleyball)

No way. The wreslers will be ahead because they are world champions and that is counted much more. My top 15 is most probably like that:

1. Stanka Zlateva (Wrestling)
2. Tsvetana Pironkova (Tennis) want it so much but we will see
3. Hristo Marinov (Wrestling)
4. Mihail Ganev (Wrestling)
5. Matey Kaziyski (Volleyball)
6. Vania Stambolova (Athletics)
7. Dimitar Berbatov (Football)
8. Petar Stoychev (Swimming)
9. Boyanka Kostova (Weightlifting)
10. Grigor Dimitrov (Tennis)
11. Jordan Jovchev (Gymnastics)
12. Vladimir Nikolov (Volleyball)
13. Tervel Pulev (Boxing)
14. Sylvia Miteva (Gymnastics)
15. Veselin Topalov (Chess)

That's my prognosis. I will not be wondered if Tsveti is forth after the wrestlers and Grigor maybe 11th but I hope I guess it right. I think that it should like but we will understand on 22th the exact places.

Tsveti was announced best female tennis player in Bulgaria this year. Most progressive player is Elitsa Kostova and best junior is Viki Tomova. She said in an interview, that her first tournament for the next season will be Hobart where she will be most probably fourth seeded. She hopes that next year she will be more consistant in her game and will try to improve her first serve percentage. Here is a pic of her from today:

Tsveti really deserved a top 3 position but top 5 is good either. The difference between 3th and 5th was only 30 points. Everybody knows that a world champion counts a lot more. The good thing is that there are two tennis players in top 10 which is the first time in Bulgaria's athlete of the year. Tsveti should be proud. This is her first entering in Bulgaria's top 10. :)

she likes playing against "big" players. her best results are against big players so if she's in good shape everything will be ok.(she beat venus in wimbledon!)

Tsveti is too unexpected. Yes she will most probably be seeded but if she plays bad like she did in most of the tournaments after Wimbledon no draw can help her. Everything depends from her. Can she find her game from Wimbledon? Will she improve the first serve percentage? Is she capable of having a better forehand?

Everything is in her hands. Two weeks are left till her first tournament for the season. Let's hope she is prepared for it.

But she did lose to Minella , so she can lose to pretty much Molik too (i know i'm exagerating.)

It was revealed later that she was ill back then. There was about a 10-minute break during the match during which she received some medical help. She had high temperature.

In fact that was not her sorest loss of the post-Wimbledon period.Vinci was in a great form in autumn, Cibulkova and Craybas always prevailed in their meetings and Anastasia Rodionova was quite solid in Istanbul, I'm still puzzled why was never consistent enough in her next round matches (in Istanbul and New Heaven).

Well, the last time when Tsveti lost a 3-set nailbitter with impressive 1st serve statistics (now 71%, back then - around 80% - which are both well out of her league :spit:) was at Eastbourne, the week before Wimbledon. :spit:

So we can expect Melbourne wonders now. :haha:
Next time you'd do better, girl!
