Davenport sticks to plan, will skip Key Biscayne

The Associated Press

Although Lindsay Davenport has played well this year, she's sticking with her plan to pass on the upcoming tournament at Key Biscayne, Fla.

Davenport was beaten 6-1, 6-4 by No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne in the Pacific Life Open final on Sunday. The loss was only Davenport's second in 17 matches this year.

Serena Williams, coming back from an eight-month layoff due to knee surgery, won't see either Davenport or Henin-Hardenne in the Nasdaq-100 Open at Key Biscayne. Henin-Hardenne said earlier that she is skipping the event.

Davenport wasn't tempted to enter the tournament because former No. 1 Williams is returning.

"That never crossed my mind," Davenport said. "What crossed my mind is I've gotten hurt there about six of the last nine years I've played.

"I'm not really fond of the conditions. You don't have a lot of time to get used to them if you do well here. It's quite humid, so windy there."

Both Davenport and Henin-Hardenne plan to next play at Amelia Island, a clay tournament that begins April.
This would be a nice opportunity for her too, but oh well. Unless Myskina loses her first match, Lindsay will drop to 5. Then I'm not eager to think about Amelia Island and Charleston coming off...
