(Hello my fellow Serena fans. I'm going to try to be more active in this thread since this thread is the one spot where all of us Serena fans can gather to talk about our love, admiration, and appreciation for all things Serena. So let's all try to gather here more often and get to know one another a lot better- I love all the other Serena fans out there...)

I'm just currious about everyone's story about when they became die-hard Serena fans- so please share....

As for me:
Well I started out as a die-hard Graf fan. Although Graf was my ultimate number one, I always kept my eyes open on all the new talent coming in and Serena really impressed me from day one. I could never have envissioned myself being a die-hard Venus fan because what I liked most about Steffi was her intensisty on the court and I just didn't see that in any other player on tour besides Serena. I remember the day where I "officialy" became a true Serena fan. When she was playing Indian Wells and that crowd was being horrible to her- I saw strength and courage in her, a will to overcome and not let the crowd get the best of her. To say that I was impressed is a great understatement. The thing I love most about Serena is her sheer will to be great (just like Steffi). To me it was a sign that the same year Steffi won her last grandslam and retired, it was the same year that Serena won her first grandslam. The torch was officialy handed over as far as I was concerned. Now if only she can stay healthy and have a career lasting as long as Graf's did- that would just be heaven!!!

Hi Stef, well I can truly say I'm a die-hard Williams' fan. But, Serena is my favorite. I think I fell in love with her when she beat Martina Hingis in the US Open for her first grand slam. I was a die-hard Billie Jean fan back in the day. But, after Billie Jean retired, I kind of lost touch with the tour and the game of tennis. I've never really seen Steffi play and I probably wouldn't have been a fan, since I would have been rooting for Monica in those days. Then Venus came along after Serena and took her first GS at Wimby and then the US Open and repeated the next year. I really got into the game then. Around the next year 2002, Serena really started to come into her own and winning titles. She plays with such intensity and I admired her style of play. The strength and accuracy, the cunningness and the serve. She had the whole package. Contrary to popular opinion, I do not think she is out for the count. I think she is waiting to come back 100% and she is going to blow everyone off the court again. I can't wait for the day to see Justine's fans crying in their beer, when Serena whips her like a step child again. Serena just always comes through for me. She has the desire, so lacking in everyone else on the tour. You can never count her out. That was never so aptly displayed at AO 03 during the semis against Kim. She came through and started to own Hingis, then JenCap and now she's going to come back and reclaim ownership of Justine. I believe it. I believe in her.

:worship:GO SERENA!! :worship:

Hi Dede42... Great post, thanks for sharing! It's hard to believe you went from the likes of Billie Jean- skipping my beloved Steffi, all the way to Venus and Serena. I agree with you in that Serena will not only be back soon, but she will come back STRONG (stronger than ever)...can't wait to see her out there dominating again....

I started watching tennis while I was in middle school. My favorite player at that time was Arantxa Sancez-Vicario. She had a flair and style I really liked. Venus and Serena immediately caught my attention at a time when my eyes were being opened by numerous players and the game was picking up with veterans and new talent.

I consider a fan of both Serena and Venus, but in terms of Serena I think I became a fan of hers for life not necessarily based on her playing style, but on her after match interviews. I saw a girl who didn't back down and one who held herself up with much intelligence and wit. The fact that she continued to win and break barriers certainly helped :)

There are many things about Serena that I love but I think I admire her fighting spirit above all else. I remember one time Serena was down (I cannot remember the oppenet) but the camera audio caught Serena telling herself, "Fight Serena, fight". Serena won the match.

I only started watching tennis in 2002, after the US Open. It was the sisters who sparked my interest in the game. There was so much excitement in the media, after they competed against each other in a GS final for the fourth time. The first match I watched featured Serena, and I've been addicted to tennis ever since. To be honest, I am a much bigger fan of Serena's than Venus', because, as mentioned, she has this intensity about her and a determination to win.

Great thread, btw. :)

Stefwhit - u give me a hard on
I became a Serena fan when I saw her on the TV in Lipton on 1998.
Unfortunately I have yet to see her live, but that is because she really enjoys skipping the Canadian tournament. She has been only once here in Toronto, and once in Montreal. she skipped it 2 times I believe. So i've been a fan of Serena Williams since her early days. I started tennis first when I saw Venus in 1997, and I soon thereafter became her adoring fan, however, as you mentioned, she lacks the intensity that I soo much like in Serena. Venus was not always like she is today though. From 1997 - the end of 2000 she was full of outbursting energy. After the Us Open 2000 and Olympics, her intensity on court and her energy - not only sank, but dissapeared altogether.
You can see she is just not the same player without it, she seems tired on the court, slow compared to how she was, her serve is not a big weapon anymore as it was, she has become so fragile that whenever she makes a move I think she will hurt something... oh Venus, u need to get a good look at Serena and take away something from her into your game.

Interview with Serena in 1998 Lipton.

Why the bare feet? Do you want to show us the nail polish?
SERENA WILLIAMS: I forgot to put my shoes on. Someone was telling me some very exciting news.

Q. What is it?

SERENA WILLIAMS: I'm not going to tell the news.

Q. It's not news unless you tell us.

SERENA WILLIAMS: Just that me and what's his name? I think it's Kuerten are going to do something. He already agreed so I'm trying to decide if I should.

I became a Serena fan in 1999 when she won her first grand slam at the US Open. I remember tuning into her match with Kim when she was fighting so hard and was down 3-5 in the third set. I always thought that tennis was boring and a snooze fest, but when I was marinating on the couch flipping through the TV, I saw this match. I rooted for her soo hard during that match and when it was over I practically woke the neighbors up screaming and cheering. From then on, I was hooked and when she won the title, I about had tears in my eyes (and I dont cry about anything). I love this womans confidence and her no holds barred attitude. She will do what she wants and noone will stop her. I think that her awesome confidence pissed off many in the tennis establishment who thought that she was supposed to just bow down and kiss the feet of everyone. I am going to be a hardcore Serena fan till the day that I die.

hi stefwhit :)

i became a die hard serena fan in 1998 :) i was at my dentist, and i saw a magazine, a picture of venus playing usopen, and it was love at first sight (it can sound weird but first i enchanted by venus without knowing who she was or if she was a good tennis player or not.. oh and i loved her name too ;) ) but i loved venus figure on that magazine. i loved the beads, i thought it was different :). i never liked tennis back then.. then on 1999 roland garros, i saw serena played and i thought it was venus :o and i was impressed with her game... and everything.. the dress the beads, her game everything, and i really started following that tournament... then i remember i heard the commentor saying that she had a sister.. venus williams.. then i remembered when i saw that magazine in 1998 :o.. and that serena was the younger sister.. and i was like*wow.. theyre sister* and i became a fan of both.. but as i followed tennis, i saw how serena was venus shadow, and how serena used to lose to venus everytime they played.. and i still didnt swallow that wimbledon 2000 semifinals, where serena beat everyone 60 60 and lost incredibly bad to venus.. and i started to feel sorry for serena and an incredible anger towards venus... i even cried that whole afternoon.. after that match i became a bigger fan of serena and i started to cheer less for venus, and since venus started not to show her emotions on court and serena is exactly the opposite and i like emotional players.. i decided to only dedicated myself to serena, but i have an interest on venus, but my main dedication is towards serena :wavey:

nice stories of you guys :)

hey guys :)

i was a casual fan during the Steffi days, i just remember if my mom was watching tennis, i would be supporting Steffi and Andre, and not care about anyone else. then i remember watching Martina lift wimby in 97, then i guess i stopped watching tennis.

it feels like ive watched Serena grow from an eager teenager to a beautiful and delightful young woman :D we didn't get much tennis coverage in Europe until after the sisters were doing well...amazing huh? i remember the hype about 2 sisters in tennis, so i knew about them, but didn't watch them. then came that day in 00 when they faced off in the Wimby semis. Britain was soooooooo hyped it was amazing. when Serena lost, it was the talk of my class, about how she looked so upset. i was thinking "i'm gonna watch the final so i have something to add". watched the final and was cheering on Venus...

then i went to Canada in August 00, and it's funny how that's the time of the Canadian Open. just flicking, i saw Serena playing Martina Hingis, someone i also had an interest in. it was amazing how Serena just wiped the court with martina for the first set, but then got injured  my first full slam following her was the USO 00. i was so sad when she got thrashed by Linzi in the quarters

so i guess, the first match i sat down and watched from start to finish involving Serena was the Canadian Open final in 00 :)

I became of fan of Serena after her victory over Lindsay Davenport at the ´99 U.S. open......I heard she had her first big win at IW earlier that year, but the way she won that match against Lindsay and the coolness and confidence she had. It was amazing. I knew it was only a matter of time before she would turn that rivalry with Venus around....and voila. She really really is the successor of Steffi Graf.

Ten years from now it will be interesting to hear the new girls on tour talking about how they were inspired to play because of Serena. I always hear Americans complaining about no new superstars in their juniors but give it sometime. Serena has impacted millions all over the world so her effect in the states will be profound. Of course it will take at least 10 years before we see it.

Hmm.........I thought I'd post! http://wtaworld.com/ubb/tongue.gif

I remember, it was Wombledon 2002. I had just gotten out of school, and was at home chilling, and I saw Venus and Serena being interviewed by Paula Zahn on CNN's American Morning, and they had just competed against eachother at the French Open, and I said "Hey, let me watch." I had known who the Williams Sisters were since they came out, but I didn't know much about them except they were African-American girls who apparently dominated tennis. I guess I had assumed that Venus and Serena were winning every major, all the time. http://wtaworld.com/images/smilies/laugh.gifhttp://wtaworld.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

So I woke up and watched Wimbledon. I don't remember much about specific matches, but at that point I loved both Venus and Serena's physical presence, and I thought it was cool and kinda sexy that Serena had blonde hair. So I watch them dominate Wimbledon, end of story. I'm a fan at this point, but not a fanatic.

Over the summer, I catch every Kournikova match on TV, I caught one Venus match, and noticed a news clip of Serena losing to Chanda Rubin. I saw the look of total disbelief for those 3 seconds after Rubin's match point, and I thought, "Wow, this girl really likes to win!" and then in her post match interview where she said, "You have to play great tennis to beat me," and that utter comfidence and aplomb (another word she taught me, LOL) and I was really leaning toward Serena. For some reasons, Venus' matches didn't really get my attention, they were boring to me, although I wanted her to do well.

Day 1: The US Open, Serena's opening match vs. Morariu. I noticed she had on the leather coat and shorts, and I thought, hmmmm, Whats that? When she took it off and stepped on court, and I saw her in action, she became my favorite then, at that point! http://wtaworld.com/images/smilies/drool.gif

Then, the Australian Open 1R cemented her status as my favorite, especially Serena's choice words towards Loit, (I loved that for some reason!) and then her match against Clijsters drove my dedication into the ground. For some reasons, I just could not see Venus as a fighter, and her expressionless play just made me snooze on her. After those two matches, I couldn't even get excited for the final, all my tennis energy was spent. http://wtaworld.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

But thats my story of how I discovered Serena Williams! http://wtaworld.com/images/smilies/wavey.gif

The thing about Serena is that she embodies everything that a tennis fan should be and have. That determination to never quit, be the best, that flair and personality that brings all to attention - you literally cannot turn away. I've been a fan since her first final with Venus -- ever since then it's been Serena #1 with me.

I saw Venus play first. She was so athletic. I loved her muscles and her serve. Then I saw Serena. She was even more muscular than Venus. I never thought I'd see a player physically stronger than Matina Navratalova, but Serena made Martina look like a weakling. It was great to see two black women finally winning tournaments on a regular basis.
I fell in love with Serena's biceps, her thighs, her curves, her smile, her style, her sense of humor, her intelligence, her determination-and also her serve, her power strokes, her going for broke all the time which often resulted in incredible winners, her speed in getting to balls, and her winning Grand Slams after finally breaking through against Venus.
There's nothing better than watching Serena play when she's at her best. Injuries have slowed her down, sometimes she makes way too many unforced errors, and sometimes she just has a bad day,but when she's on she's the best there ever was.

i'm not sure who's more talented but serena is the better tennis player. every ingredient you need to be great serena has and isn't lacking in any of the major departments. i like venus but i don't think it's an accident that serena has acheived more and i don't think it was an accident that serena prevented venus from so many major titles. serena has prevented a lot of people from major titles, in that regard, venus is just another player across the net.

I second that...

While I think Venus is more talented, Serena is a greater tactician, thinker, and fighter out there. So the fact that Vee is more talented is irrelevant, because all of her abilities cannot compare to the fire that is inside of Serena Williams.

Now if she would get her ass in the gym....:lol::lol:

Can't remember when specifically, just liked watching her, she was a breath of fresh air for the game. I enjoy seeing Serena express herself on court, I like emotional players. She also carries herself well on court regarding bad line calls and such. It's fun to watch her smash rackets though!

Just like to add that one of the classiest moments in tennis for me was after the 'hand' match at RG, with all the disgraceful behaviour by some of the spectators, seeing Oracene stay and applaud JHH off the court. The TV commentators mentioned it too. Not many would have done that.

i'm a fan of both venus and serena and i don't really remember when i became a fan, it was about the time that i first started getting into tennis as a whole. it was probably wimbledon 2001 because that was the year that i fell in love with tennis, i was rooting for both goran and venus that year. after that i always rooted for the all williams finals and i watch their matches whenever i can. this past october i saw my first live tennis match and i got to see venus play in philadephia against mauresmo, sadly she lost but i still loved seeing her. hopefully i'll get to see serena play soon. i'm going to wimbledon this year and i would absolutely love to see both serena and federer. so i'm keeping my fingers crossed :) overall i just feel like they've done a lot for the sport, and also outiside of tennis, all around they are good rolemodels for a lot of people. they had a goal, and a lot of people didn't believe that they could do it, and they did which was so awesome. :wavey:

Here goes....I was living in Hamburg, Germany in 1997 and CNN worldsport did a special segment on two players who are from a rough and tough neigborhood being trained by their dad.

I dont know what area it was but it was pretty shady... anyways they kept on practising, and had a no nonsense approach to what they were doing...

The reporter was like..look out for the william sisters in the years to come, and i think it was next year that they made their mark....

First it was Monica Seles and Sanchez Vicario for me but then it became Serena...I loved her game and realized that if she played to her top ability she truly is unbeatable. I STICK TO THIS FACT EVEN TODAY... I dont think any player on the tour can match serena when she is at her best...

I guess another reason why I am a fan is cuz of the fact that I can relate to them since they are also a minority and I'm also part of a minority....+ she seems like a nice person too.

I became Serena fan in 2000, when she lost to her sister at Wimbledon SF. Untill then, Venus was my #1 favorite, and Serena was on second place, but since then it all turned arround.
And I will have no other #1 favorites as long as Rena keeps on playing tennis, no metter how successfull she will be...
And, just like loving Serena, I will never stop loving Venus and Ana Ivanovic.
My favorites list:
1) Serena
2) Ana Ivanovic
3) Venus
All the other players don't count as my real favorites.

:bounce: Monica came first, the classic "REBEL", hard worker and genuine "Nice Girl" how could one person possess all those qualities?????Then I fell under the spell of Vee's Science, she seemed to be out there all by herself fighting against the world, quiet, determined and very young. When I first saw Serena (I forgot the Tourney) she was playing in Europe and took like 900 bathroom and trainer breaks, then she came back on the court and had to retire from the match  She was so shaken and obviously upset because she had to retire, that I felt sorry for her. I said to myself, oh well she is finished, and then she came back the very next Tourney and rocked, excuse me ladies, no disrespect intended, but I started noticing that world class body and was amazed at the efficiency and purpose that she flung all that womanhood around the court  she was fast, strong and very feminine, then I started listening to her interviews,   She is also very funny, by this time she had stolen my heart. Serena reminds me of many of the women I have met in my life, the ones that I remember are truly amazing, she is one of a kind, and I will support her in anything her sweet little heart desire. Gonna buy some of the new Aneres longere (for my Girl  ) and continue this love affair that is solely in my head. :wavey:

:worship:
Well, that was me when I was DeDe42  and I still feel the same. Didn't I tell you she'd come back and come back she did winning the first slam of the year. I think she really wants Wimby again, so Ms. Maria and the rest need to watch out.

I became a fan of Serena when she tore through the field at the '99 US Open. I play tennis, and I'm the only black player on my team, so it was really neat to see another black player doing well in a predominately white sport. The way she bullied Hingis in the final was so mesmorizing!!! After I saw that match, I wanted to play just like her. I went out and perfected a similar service motion to Serena, my forehand and backhand are similar to hers, and I try to hit with the same power that she does (even though I'll probably never hit the ball like her!). Even though she sort of fell into a slump between 2000-2002, I still loved her. I love her game, her outfits, and her personality on the court. I have really come to admire her fighting spirit. Serena is a perfect example of this: As long as you're still on the court, there's still a chance to win - no matter what the score is. When she really started dominating in 2002-2003, I was in heaven! Never have I seen a woman strike a tennis ball like that. I don't think I ever missed one of her matches. The way she just blasted her opponents off the court was incredible. It's so funny because I started to take on some of the same qualities of Serena!!! My serve was one of the best on my tennis team, my forehand was my weakest shot, and very few people could outhit me on the court! In 2004, after she came back from her knee surgery, my respect of Serena reached a new level. Seeing her compete when she clearly wasn't at her best really made me admire her even more. The fact that she still plugged away when it seemed like everyone around her was better really made me value the fighter in her. She was still a factor in most tournaments even though she wasn't one of the best!!! That says a lot about the type of person she is. Serena is incredible. She's a role model for all aspiring black players because she has defied the stereotypes. I will always support and love Serena.

Probably when I first saw her at Wimbly, but I can' remember what year. I only started fancying her last year though. She has a really nice personality, and I like both the Williams' voices. They are really soft and gentle and nice to hear.

I became a Serena fan back in the USO 1999. It was right after her semifinal match. Serena and Venus had always fascinated me, but I’ve always been more intrigued by Serena. I was 14 and Serena was closer to my age and she was born on the same day I was born. I immediately felt as if I had more in common with her. We have similar personalities and she’s also very entertaining on and off the court. Not only that, she’s the perfect combination of beauty and power. She’s a fighter and a champion. Some of the things she has done on the tennis court amazes me. I always root for her because she displays terrific sportsmanship and grace. She’s my favorite and I’ve rooted for her for as long as I can remember.

I officially became a fan when she put the fright in my then-favorite Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in the R16 match in Roland Garros 8 years ago!

I had heard that Richard said she was more talented than Venus, so I had to see what this unheralded young player was made of.

Alright... well back in 2002 is when I really first heard of the Williams Sisters. I was about 13 or so. So, yeah, I knew who they were who doesn't? Well, anyways, I was never really into tennis then and didn't watch it much, I was only a kid. I only say one doubles match which was very fun to watch. But then in 2004 I remember seeing some of the French Open and watched a match or two but not really anything. Then during that summer, Wimbledon came, and I was helping my cousin work at the local recreating department doing Arts & Crafts. Well, I got very bored and turned on the tv to discover Serena's match with Mauresmo. I began watching and I was having a blast. So, yes, I became a fan. Then I watched the final, and was so expecting to win. I was so pissed when Serena lost and could not believe it.

But still not a fanatic, just a little fan. I barely watched the U.S. Open only off and on. Then came the YEC. I watched the SF against Mauresmo and the fainl against Sharapova. I was pretty into it, but more pissed that Sharapova won the way she did. Then came the Australian Open 2005. Thsi is when I became a fanatic, because I would not miss a match of Serna's. I remember watching Serena/Sharapova SF and I was up in my room at midnight on a school night cheering my ass off quietly. I was so into it and really getting some big superstitions. That is the day I became of TOTAL fanatic of Serena Williams.

Well i have to admit that im a pretty new fan. I only started to watch tennis in 2004. Actually the first whole tournament i saw, was the 04 US Open...And with her hot catsuit Serena took the breath out of me :hearts: Of course i had heard about the Williams sisters before, (i guess everyone in the world has heard about them) but tennis never really interested me. I remember when i was only around 10, i kept hearing every year that these 2 sisters had once again made it to the final rounds of Wimbledon, and i believed as everyone else that they was completely dominating the tennis world.
In 2004 i decided to watch some tennis because i actually wanted to follow these 2 winning sisters. I remember sitting and watching Serena losing to Capriati. Yeah, the controversial match. I was sooooo dissapointed because Serena lost that one. Since that US Open ive been a huge Williams and tennis fan. ;) So the sisters was definitely the ones getting me into the sport. And right know, when they're out of it, tennis is sooooo boring. :o Actually tennis is developing into a decent sport. Something it wasn't when the sisters were dominating.

I became a true fan of Serena's after her great victory at the 99 U.S. Open. I remember, watching Serena beat a minefield of good and great players like Martinez,Clijsters,Seles,Davenport, and finally Hingis,it was truly memorable.
Her Semi-Final with Davenport stands out as a testament to Serena's toughness, I remember being impressed with her smart strategy and will to win in that match. But what really surprised and made me a huge fan was her coolness for the most part in her first Grand Slam Final and, especially in that Tie-Break, She won my heart as she persevered over the clever experienced Hingis who had beaten Venus in that heartbreaking Semi-Final,I wanted Serena to win so badly and when She got some retribution for the house of Williams,She became my no.1 player.

Hi, everyone!:wavey:

I'm new to this forum but i already like to be here so much!!!!!!
It's great that so many Serena (and Venus) fans can chat about different things, express their opinions, etc. :)

(Sorry for possible mistakes as English is not my native language)
This is my story:
Actually, i've become a true fan of both Venus and Serena since US Open 1999; then i couln't really watch tennis matches live as i didn't have the Internet or sports channels, so i was just following every sports news on TV or on the wireless and reading sports columns in newspapers in keen anticipation for the news that Vee or Rena had just won...
Ever since we had bought a satellite dish back in December 2001 I have been watching their every match (and still do) esp. in Grand Slams and supporting and rooting for them like crazy!!!!! :bounce: I think I won't be able to put it in words properly but I love everything about Serena and Venus: the way they play, their classy fashion statements on and off the court, the way they speak and conduct interviews, their goddes-like bodies... :hearts:
Sadly, but my family members can't understand how on Earth I can root for Williams when I live in Russia and ,of course, must support the likes of Shutupova:fiery: , Demented-ova:rolleyes: , Petrova:tape: , Kuznetsova:o .... I don't get this!
I do like Myskina and Safina though:cool:
Really, I think anyone has the right to like whoever they choose regardless of their nationality, age, sex, etc. I personally don't give two hoots about who says what as long as they don't say nasty things about my favourites(Venus, Serena and Roger);

My favourite Venus's moments are:(very inspiring and sincere)
Wimby 05 SF & F:bounce:
US Open 00 SF & F
2000 Sydney Olimpics QF & F
Wimby 03 QF & SF
Miami 01 F

... and Serena's: (so difficult to choose from)
AO 07 all the way:worship:
AO 05 SF
AO 03 SF
Indian-Wells 99/01 F
Miami 02 QF, SF, F
FO 02 SF
Wimby 03 QF,SF & F
UO 01 4R, QF!!!!!!!!!!!, SF!!!!!!!!!!!(my favourite Grand Slam of 21st century)
There were many sad moments and disappointments too:help: , but i try not to keep them in mind and always look on the bright side!

Good luck to Venus/Serena and their fans all around the world!!!!!

I've been following both sisters since the early '90s when they were kids. A local sportscaster here in LA, Jim Hill, did a story on two little girls from compton whose father was predicting they would be #1,2 in the world. I gotta admit, I just dismissed what he was saying as just talkin' head. But I did start to follow them. I was disappointed when I heard they'd moved to Florida, but I still kept track- really of Venus, because that's who all the big noise was being made about. By then, the tennis elite was starting to get in the act and give their opinions about how wrong Richard was for not having them play a rigorous Junior's schedule, blah, blah, you guys know the history, but it was mainly all about Venus. Then finally, though I'm sure it wasn't the first time he'd said it, I read where Richard said that the YOUNGER was even better than the older. That really got my attention. About '97, when she beat Mary Pierce (whom I love) and Monica Seles, I was hooked. She was the lowest ranked player ever to have defeated two top 10 players in one tourney. I think she was in the 300s somewhere. Of course, if you'd asked me at that time is she was my fave, i'd probably have said that Venus was. Then in '98 when she lost to Vee at the AO, I started favoring Serena. I hated the way the announcers were talking about her- dismissing her, even though she was already making a historical climb up the rankings.

Anyway, in '99, here in LA at Manhattan Beach (before the tourny moved to Carson) my wife and I were seated on the first row RIGHT BEHIND Serena!!! It was the semi and she was playing Hingy. there had been a lot of noise talked between both camps at that time. This was the first time I'd seen Serena play live. She was amazing. She looked like she was some kind of female superhero (speaking of which, "Heros" is on tonight, Yes!). Now I know everyone THINKS the cat suit was invented in '02, but let me tell ya. Serena was warmin' up in the Cat suit as early as '99!! That was fun to watch. I had to look like I wasn't enjoying it too much though, I was with the wife. Anyway, we cheered soooooo hard for Serena. Ain't no way she couldn't of heard us! I know Richard thought we were crazy. At that time, he was VERY accessible. He's truly a nice man, though these days much more reserved.

At the end of the match(she won 3 and 5), when she was hitting autographed balls to people waaaaaay up in the stands, she took a ball signed it and practically walked right up to us and tossed it to ME!!!!!!! DONE! GAME OVER! FAVE FOR LIFE! :hearts: :hearts: That sealed the deal!!!

That's how it happened for me! Anyway, sorry it's so long.

No, there's something about Serena. I'm a grown ass 46 year old truly hetrosexual woman who's obsessed with a 25 year old woman. I just want to be close to her, but watching her play is good enough, because I know we'll never be close friends, but that is my desire. Everytime I see her, she puts a smile on my face, no matter what's going on in my life. OK I always liked Venus and Serena in the late 90's but I became a big time fan in about 2001. I have always liked her confident attitude. I loved and still to love her game I mean her power and athletism are just awesome to watch and I love watching her just swat away winner off the second serve. I love her outfits and her bling. I mean she is such a great fashion officionata and does her own thing and stands out and does it with confidence. She is one of the true all time personalites and have brought so much to the game. I also love it when she stares down her opponents and her intensity on court is almost unmatchged its scary at times. I will always be a fan of Serena

I used to not like her. But c'mon, watching her play..... you HAVE to at least respect her. She has an amazing game and an incredible mind set. I believe I've always secretly been a fan..... but I really cheered for her when she beat Maria at the Aussie Open in 2005. Now THAT was an exciting match. So yes, now I'm an open fan of Serena's and after watching her trophy speech at the Aussie Open this year, Ive become an even bigger fan! She's such a fighter!

I started out playing tennis in lagos, Nigeria tennis club when I was 3years. But it was only an hobby, until I went to the 1997 Us Open Authur ashe kids day event and saw for the first time Serena and Venus playing mixed doubles. I was so tiny back then; 1ittle 10year old boy holding that giant tennis ball asking for an autograph, which i gladly got--- "Just to let you know I still have that ball, and I have up to 50 signatures of venus and serena williams till date" I was hooked since then, and I knew tennis was going to be my sport. Although when they battle together I always favor venus, but serena is always my backup and I am glad to be alive to see such a wonderful display of black power and pure strength and determination. :)

Hi i became a huge serena fan in about 2005. I truly admire her fighting spirit and never say die attitude, she is an inspiration to everyone who has hard times in life and you fight through them. When ever i have rough times and feel like giving up i think of serena and her fighting spirit and i do something about it, it always works. I hope she wins many more grand slams she has the ability to become one of the all time greats.

I went to the McDonals Tour. They came to ATL on December 2nd,2004 (lol). It was right after Rena hurt herself at the YEC and you can tell that she was injured. Venus won 6-2,3-6,6-2. On MP, Venus lifted her arms in the air like "get up" and the match ended. I ran for anoutgraph. I tripped over a row of seats and fell but someone caught my fall. I got to meet the Serena Williams and talk to her for 20 seconds. She got me into tennis after she won the FO in 2002. I was a news buff and it was on CNN and I thought that ennis looked neat. I siad that you got me into tennis, and asked her how her abdomen injury was and she said fine. (She wasnt serving 100% let alone playing at her level). Then I said good luck at the Ausie and she won it! That was a great night. I also met jim courier, jana novonta, anna kournikova, johnny mac and murphy jensen in May of this year. At the mcdonalds thing, I met murphy and scoville jenkins and robbye poole. It was great!

I got a racket the day after the FO final when i saw serena win

think it was too mild at the french this year and she couldnt pump herself up. but if the crowd was more into it either for justine or serena then she would use that energy to help her fight more.

all serena fans got to see her play live at least once and hopefully its a match where shes fired up. those are always classic.

By the way, Im so jealous of all you guys who have seen her play, or seen her in person. TeamWilliams why didn't you go and speak to her? So jealous. I will hopefully go to Wimbleodn next year though, and make a point of trying to see her in one of the early matches.

Venus did the Roland Garros and the Wimbledon of '97. The RG was the first time I saw her on tv. Even though it was a first round match, the media covered it bc she played Jana Novotna (from memory I could be wrong). You could see a future champion at that time, she was so powerful.

Then came Serena.

Boy, this rediculously curvy athletic body, huge assets, blonde black girl walking around the tennis court like a superheroin, I immediately favored Serena over Venus, how many of you guys had the same thing ? I'm curious.

I love Serena for her never say die attitude, she represents normal sized women around the world who have been called fat.Her positive attitude is inspirational.
I became a big fan when she won the French Open 2002,I still remember the way she threw her racket lifted her arms smiled with so much sincere joy it really was contagious.

I became a fan of Serena's in 1997/98 the moment I heard my fave Venus had a little sister.
It was so exciting. Now I would have two Williamses to support!
I remember the early days when ranked really low, she beat an impressive number of top ten players. She clearly woudn't just be the little Sister!

Other early memories include the weekend both she and Venus won titles on the same day, I think Serena won the Gaz de France and Venus Oklahoma.

Other random early Serena memories:her A.O (?3rd round) match with Venus in 98, they looked so happy and supportive of each other, how close she came to beating Arantxa Sanchez Vicario at Roland Garros one year, and her excitng win over Graf at Indian Wells in 1999. That was my first thrilling Serena Final.

But the most exciting of her early wins for me was at the 1999 US Open. Almost every Serena match was a nerve-wracking 3-setter, I recall her playing exciting 3-set wins over Seles and a barn-burner against Davenport when she won 6-4 in the third set, achieving the decisive break off a lucky net cord!!! Phew, she was in the final and was to face Hingis, who had handed Venus a painful defeat. Serena had to win at all costs, family pride was at stake! Plus she had had an exchange of words with the Hingis camp and after Martina said the Williamses have 'big mouths', Serena said Hingis speaks without thought because she lacked a formal education:lol: . Boy, do I miss those days!

I missed a big birthday party to stay at home and watch the '99 USO Final, my friends thought I was crazy lol! But how could I miss this once in a life time oppotunity? Serena's first slam final was a must-see event!

I still recall her reaction on match point after the tough final, where she had to be at her athletic best against the incredibly consistent Hingis, flying around the court in her yellow Puma dress, beads clacking in the wind. Importantly, as ever, she served well throughout the match and had chances to close it out 6-3 in the second to avoid the tense tie-break, understandably felling some nerves.
The ups and downs from '00 to '01, the incredible run from '02 to '03, the catsuit:drool: ..., the thrilling comeback against Clijsters from 1-5 down to reach the '03 A.O final...

This year at the A.O, when I thought I was over being nervous during Serena's matches, I was shocked to find my hands shaking as she clawed past Shahar Peer and Nadia Petrova with wins that showed she could still dig deep and never give up!

After the Petrova win, I sat on the same spot for the rest of the tournament ( I know its silly, but it seemed to work;) ). I was almost laughing as she took Maria apart in the final!

To cut a long story short, I've had a wonderful time being a Serena fan and love her for her lively, exuberant personality, her explosive game, incredible intensity, and she seems to be a genuinely nice person that makes me laugh with her many memorable funny quotes.

I have been a fan of Serena and Venus for forever .I remember the first time I saw them play I was hooked. Serena beat hingis in 1999 :bounce: :bounce: awesome. They have been through so much and never respected by the majority or the commentaters and they have been the classest women on tour. But you know what they don't need their respect, turns out not having it makes them more eager to prove their worth on the court and in their business and life outside of tennis.

Hi. I've been on this forum for a while now and only now stumbled upon this thread. Thought I'd share my story...

For me, tennis began with the Williams sisters. I only had a vague idea about the sport and before Venus and Serena, I did not know any of the players' names, the places, or anything else tennis fans would find important. From 2000-2003, during "Serena Slam" and them being the top players, I still did not get into tennis, but I became aware of their presence and their importance in leading American tennis.

When I think about it, I regret not being a fan sooner because I am sure I would have been ecstatic when Venus and Serena met during the Grand Slam finals.

Serena at AO 2007 was emotional to watch, because I did not know any background info when I was watching the final against Sharapova. I got caught up because of what the commentators were saying, and the more I heard, the more I cheered for Serena. They kept mentioning her not being a seeded player (I did not know what that meant at the time), the loss of one of her sisters (I did not know she had more than one), and her health, among other things. And her acceptance speech was just again, very emotional, and I just wanted to give her a hug. I think that's when I became a Serena fan.

I guess I consider myself a 'late bloomer' in becoming a tennis fan, since I only really got interested in tennis during Wimbledon 2007, when I saw Venus going through the rounds and winning it for the fourth time in her career. And then at USO, I became a JJ fan from her QF match against Venus, during which I rooted for Venus to win but then after JJ's personality and charm was just so disarming I couldn't help but like her.

JJ's my favorite women's tennis player, but Venus and Serena will always be special to me, and I consider them to have changed women's tennis forever and they are the ones who ushered in a new era.

Hello everybody,

I am one of the few people who likes both Martina Hingis and Serena Williams. I started getting into Serena when she would always play Jennifer Capriatti. There matches against each other were so fun and exciting, just like the Venus and Hingis matches were. I miss those really fun and intense rivalries. Now of days there aren't any real exciting rivalries except for maybe Venus/Jankovic and Serena/Sharapova. Even though I do not like Justine I will miss her matches with Serena. I like a lot of other players, but Serena is always the most exciting. Her matches have highs and lows and lots of drama. In terms of entertainment, no one can compare to Serena. I have been lurking in this thread for years so I finally wanted to introduce myself and share my story. You guys all seem like a close bunch of people who are not at as bad as people in the General Message boards all make you seem like.

Well you can also count me as someone who like Serena and Hingis. I would not say I am a massive fan of Martina the person, but I love the tennis player and always used to make an effort to watch her matches :wavey:

I agree about the rivalries too. Jankovic vs. the Williams Sisters are the only great ones that springs to mind.

Serena vs. Sharapova is a good "rivalry" - in the drama when they play. Both want to kill the other one it seems :lol;

It was at this tournament I saw Serena's true character I was impressed with how she carried herself after her sisters murder and with some of the crap she received in the press here about her weight.

I started watching tennis at the age of 15;it was when Serena defeated Venus in the 2002 Wimbledon Final-that was the first match i saw.I not only fell in love with them because they had game and was exciting to watch, but because they looked different from the rest of the field. You get tired of seeing all whites in womens tennis, and the same goes for the NBA where there's mostly Blacks and the NHL where there are mostly whites. You want to see some diversity in each sport and Serena and Venus brought that to the womens tennis game.

My worry now is can they get to double digits in Grand Slam singles titles to seal their legendary status.Serena has 8 Grand Slams and Venus have 7.I know they both have the game to win 4-5 more each, but their off court interest is a distraction ,and winning a Grand Slam every two years isn't gonna cut it when you're 28 and 26 years of age.I feel Venus can win 2 to 3 more Wimbledons in the next 5 years and 1 hard court or clay court Slam.

Martina Navratilova won her last Grand Slam at the age of 34,and Chris Evert,Jimmy Connors, and Billie Jean King all won their last Grand Slams at 31-in their early 30's,and with these tennis stars having treatment to keep them in good shape nowadays,i feel they both can play at a high level for the next 5-6 years and win more Slams.

But when it comes down to a top anything vs a WS, I hate them intensely until they are soundly defeated and sent packing :wavey:

And if one of them dares beat Ree or Vee...well....:weirdo:

:haha:  Vee gets a special pass in my eyes since they're sisters.

I'm sorta split, because though I like to watch the big players playing in a match, I hate to see them scooping up points and increasing the lead/decreasing the gap on Vee&Ree.

So if Ree loses in a tourny, I want a small name to surprise everyone so that them getting the points doesnt really affect the WS, but when they aren't in the event I would rather see a big player win :scared:

I dunno how to explain it

I only really followed tennis in 2005, and I started following and liking Serena since her win over Maria at the 2005 Australian Open. They both went at it, gave it their all, and the way Serena fought in that match, fending off three match points [two of those were winners] was amazing; Maria didn't choke, Serena took that win away from her.

Serena just has this amazing aura about her, and the words "Serena Williams" just does something for me; it evokes excitement and fight.

Usually players try and fight when they are down in a match ala Maria and Justine and usually succeed because their opponents end up choking, but with Serena it's more natural, more substance, just more self believe. Which is evidence by how she can fight back, match points down, against the best [Kim AO 03, Maria at the AO 05, Justine in Miami 2007, Venus in Bangalore 08].

indeed zadent....you can be guaranteed that ree won't need errors from her opponent to win the match even if she was making a boatload of errors and was down...she has that ability to turn off that form completely in a match and win from some of the most impossible positions (5-1 down vs Kim anyone) and start hitting winners galore...with the others i think they just clean up their games, keep holding serve, doing nothing major in the match and just wait for the choke...and if and when the choke does come they are seen as mentally tough :bs: and then when the choke doesn't come and they lose, it was just a "blip" on the radar

not taking anything away from jh (well yea i am in a way but who cares), in almost all her matches from QF of the US Open till YEC she benefited from all her opponents handing her matches....especially during that european swing where dani "chokesalotbuteatsseldom" hantuchova and tati "ificouldchokeonmyankleiprobablywouldtokeepitallaso ne" golovin had her for the taking and as soon as winning the match came near they both just shut down...same thing in sydney this year with those 3 set chokes from everyone...but oh well...

anyways!!!!! winnerena is back (hopefully for good) and that's all i care about :D

amazing times!!!!! and some more are ahead!!!! 2009 :hearts:

the 03 oz open final is when i became a true fan for life, forever, no matter what. i had always loved v&s and watched them in the slams (like the USO, saw all of serena's wins including '99 uso, never really followed the tier Is or IIs), but 03 is when i fell in love (no homo) with Serena. it was a great match and what she had just achieved i really didn't get it at that time. i was about sixteen with no real breath of this sport, just being honest.

i then followed serena everywhere (and vee too), but i just took such a liking to how serena was on court, to her power, her fashion, her whit, and her unapologetic nature. she's so real with her emotions, win or lose and i cannot fault her for that.

since that point i've bought dvds of their other matches, books, etc. to see what i missed out on when i wasn't playing close attention to serena. for me, she is the greatest ever. her determination and killer instinct are unmatched. she's a mental giant. and her "don't give a f--k" attitude makes me like her all the more lol i'm so much more into tennis than i thought i ever could be. i even play, now. for this I BLAME SERENA.

for 09, i want her to prove herself (yes she's won 9 slams but still has to prove herself) again as a pure and utterly devastating dominant force, perhaps the most dominant and intriguing player ever. so as the haters keep trying to figure it out...how she wins but doesn't train, or has businesses that aren't related to tennis, or that she has a life which prevents her from playing 25 tournaments a year....i will just sit back and enjoy the show as serena does her thing, all the while winning slams.

It really started with my sister in 2000. She really got me into Tennis. I remember watching an interview by Richard saying that Serena will be better. I started following Williams’ from that day on. Always been a Serena fan from the highs to the lows and in-between. She is a born fighter and never gives up like today. Countless have I saw her win a match when he was about to lose. One of the greatest Tennis players of all time, secured by that 2007 win at the Australia Open.

I really only became a Serena fan last year. For the most part of her domination I despised her, always loved Venus and didn't like Serena. I thought she was a rude, arrogant, ungrateful, nasty piece of work! lol. But over 2007/2008 I grew fond of her and really noticed she was not the horrible person I made her out to be. And it was not Serena changing but more so my way of thinking and how I changed in my acceptance of her. Now i think SERENA RULZ!

The first time i saw Venus playing tennis i was in love.

I cant remember what year but she played a French player she was quit known( the French woman, she later wrote a book about her Carrier and bad mouthing the sisters), cant remember her name now. But it was at RO and she played on center court. She lost but she was hitting some bombs. And since then i was in love.
I remember what she was wearing tho, she had a silver dress on, and she wouldn't sit at the change overs. Well that where it all began for me. Then i saw Serena and i made my decision she's my fave. I don't know why but i was just drawn to To Rena.

But thats my story of how I discovered Serena Williams! http://wtaworld.com/images/smilies/wavey.gifLOL, I had to go back and look for my original post in here. Still love her like no other, 7 years later.

I can't describe the feeling. It's weird.

I became a fan of Serena, through one of my best friends and his love for the William sisters. I came to admire and really like her, once I saw her in person for the first time. It was just incredible watching what she was capable of doing on the tennis court and brought a new impression of her for me.

So, I would say through the vision of a friend, I became a bigger fan of hers. Also, with the absence of Justine from my heart of tennis, I had to find other people to put my attention and focus behind :)

Anywho, I have been a fan of Serena since the 2000 US Open she got me into tennis because prior to that tournament I had never really watched tennis religiously and didn't actively play it myself so I missed the 1999 triumph but knew that she was the defending champion. She instantly became my favorite player because of her outfit that year, the purple/black tie-dye dress and because I loved the way she played her powerful game, her passion and determination on the court and her grunt as well. She has been my favorite player ever since and always will be. No one else comes even close to her.

Ok,I'm feeling the spirit,so I will answer the altar call, Brother!

I became a Serena fan around 2000 or so because of my daughter.

She was one of those crazy as hell Williams fans too,(Venus was her favorite) and whenever either one of them played, she would morph into this hilariously weird person---doing strange things to "help" them win or send positive energy their way--you know the funny stuff we do.

Anyways, I started watching matches with her, reading the tennis board that she belonged to, and before too long, I was sucked into the madness, acting just like her, sometimes worse.

I liked Venus a lot, but Serena soon became my favorite.(btw, I rolled when I read that thread 'you know you are a Serena fan when...' so thanks, I totally relate.

Next, I joined wtaworld, and it became me and her against the "sane" sports fans in the family, until a couple years ago when one more member migrated over and now they're showing signs of weirdness too, I love it!

I became a fan during the FO 2004 but I remember cheering for her during the FO 2002 and FO 2003 but the truth is at the time I was young I would say eight or nine and I only watched her during Roland Garros and after the F0 2004, I became a crazy as hell fan and ever since it's been the same

hi BlameSerena:wavey:

Yeah, thank goodness for my daughter-I would have missed out on all the fun.

And while she is still a fan of the Williams, she quit the tennis boards quite sometime ago and I'm the one keeping her informed now.

First, Thank you for this question
I'm starting to like Serena since 2002, when the revolution in the world of tennis on won 3 Grand Slam means began to gravitate and decided to follow her closely and see how it is strong and talented and I was careful to watch her matches Vs her sister Venus Because their games are in very good and in the high level:)

I exactly dont remember when but when she was a teen tennis player and natural as general look. Im attracted by her strength, passion and fashion. Im fan of her because She is not only a tennis player also a kind of celebrity. She is like a real showgirl. She knows how to attract attention of the world. And she is too much more than a usual sportswoman. She is abnormal in positive way.

Welcome teamoore and SWilliams! Thanks for all the stories~ I still love reading them all.

I can still remember watching that match against Kim in Indian Wells, she looked so cute with those two big cabbage-patch braids. Just watching her get more determined as that crowd showed their ass and booed her as well as applaud her errors. I was so disgusted and at the same time so taken by this teenage girl. She turned her hurt into emotion she could use on the court~ and from that day the torch was officially passed down and I went from a Steffi fanatic to a Serena fanatic.

I got lucky it's usually not like that. When your favorite player for over 10 years retires you really think you won't have another player that you can support on that level~ but Serena proved that theory wrong.

Now here we are so many years later and I can't see anyone replacing Serena. At best we've got another 5-7 years tops~ then what?? That thought scares me cuz Serena off the tour for just a few months feels like torture, how will I ever cope when she officially retires??? Lucky for us we don't have to worry about that right this second!!!

Someone should do a thread on number twos (or your second favorite player). It's interesting because Kimmie as my second favorite player occupies a big place in my heart and I don't miss any of her matches, and trust~ I'm always rooting for her but still it's just not the same.

Back when I first started watching tennis Chris Evert was my solid number two. When she retired I flirted w/Zina, M.J Fernandez, and Natasha Zvereva but none stood taller than the rest. It wasn't until Iva Majoli came on the scene did I have a real number two. Then she retired and I was in search of a new number two; and again the flirting began, this time w/a whole new set of players: Myskina, Petrova, and, Chanda Rubin. But again none stood out above the rest then Kim ignited that spark in me and...blah blah blah.

Finding a solid second favorite player is almost as hard as finding a favorite...lol But your second, no matter how much love u have for them, can never replace your favorite!
