I became a fan because in 2003, F0 SF Williams vs. Henin! my first Tennis match I saw! I saw her strength and heart in this sport and I fell in love with her!

p.s I am a straight female!

Well for those who haven't converted yet, let's just show them this:

Q. Is there a chance you'll still be playing at 38, do you think?

SERENA WILLIAMS: 38?

Q. Yeah.

SERENA WILLIAMS: If I am, I want you to personally take me off and escort me off the court. There's no way I need to be out here at 38.

Hey guys :D

I became a fan through Venus and watching them play so many matches together. I just flipped the channel one day. Saw Venus and was like who is this, so tall and powerful and a hard hitter. So I continued watching some tennis and that's when I guess the Serena slam happened-when they just kept playing each other. Tall, muscular, beautiful, strong, exciting, crazy clothes. And of course Serena is the louder, more open one and you just can't help but kinda fall for her because her smile is infectious and she just looks like the best player ever.

Hello guys, i became a fan in 2002, when i saw her in this crazy as hell sexy catsuit. Since than i'm fan of her unique beauty, and match after match i started to love her attitude on tennis court, her passion. I met her in Berlin, when she was destroying my country girl Radwanska(i hate her). She seems very down to earth to her fans.

Greetings to all the fans, and sorry for my english

I've known her since her 99 US Open win but I didn't follow her religiously till Wimbledon 2003 - her lost at the French 03 was all over the news so I knew it was a big deal. I had bad timing since she was gone for 8 months after that and I was so bored since I had a hard time finding a job and I just got out of college LOL

The biggest Serena-fan, late at the party.

Became a Serena-fan during the ' 99 u.s. open. Already heard of her big success earlier in the ywar, but the ' 99 Open was THE clincher. How she kept winning all those three-setters and then showed her clutchness in the final. A legend was born!

I feel Stef's fear. How are we gonna survive a tour without Serena?! :sobbing: :hysteric:

Assuming the tour itself survives

I just hope she outlasts the Belgians (again) so that they cant mop up the weak ass tour and improve their legacies against the Wozniackis and Radwanskas.

I only started watching Tennis in 2007, during Wimbledon(I was only 12.) Obviously as an American, I knew who the Williamses were, but had no idea what they were actually about. I first saw Venus beating... someone, but the first Rena match I saw was against Hantuchova. Her fight, even through injury reeled me in, and the fact that she was the underdog(Or so I thought) made me follow her more and more. Of course, at the time I didn't know about the Serena Slam, or any of that, but that wouldn't have made me love her any less :hearts:

~GROUP HUG~ a hardy welcome to Nerfertiti, GhostFace, nadalloverforeva, and ChrisWilliams. Thanks for sharing your Serena stories with us.

I feel funny saying welcome to you 'bandy'- you're actually one of the very first posters I remember having some great discussions with when I joined the board back in 2005- you may a bit tardy, but thanks for sharing nonetheless.

nadalloverforeva- a special shout out to you for your obvious GREAT taste in tennis players. WIth Serena and Nadal both winning the last slam and with both of them sitting on top of the rankings, these are indeed happy times for us. VIVA NADALERENA!!!!

I became a fan of both Venus and Serena sometime in the late 90s, can't say exactly when. They stole me away from Martina Hingis and Chanda Rubin(slightly;)), who I'd been stanning for hard until I noticed the sisters. The story of where they came from, how they got into tennis, and their determination to be the best, was more than enough to get my backing. Also, it felt like I was right there with them in dealing with the racist and elitist elements in our society.

In All-Williams matches, however, I always go with Venus. Don't know why, it just is what it is. Serena shouldn't be whooping up on her big sis like that.

Most Williams fans seem to like Venus more, not sure why. Chanda was good in her day. Too bad she always had major issues. I always thought she would make one slam final in her career. I think she beat all the top players at least once if I'm not mistaken. Serena isn't anything like Chanda or Hingis. Funny that you went from Hingis to Venus. You might be the first ever.

I think because most people saw Venus play or on the scene first, being the older of the two. IDK I feel in love with Venus first and as much as Serena is the better player I can't seem to let go of Venus as my first love. However, people think I'm more of a Serena fan the way I attack anyone who dear to touch Ree, but...

Still I'm a fan nonetheless, not sure when or where I became one but I'm one. Might have been right after she won her first GS beating HINGIS. SWEET!!!

Well, before 2008 I've only heard of the Williams sisters occasionally on sports news showing them in Grand Slams and stuff. I wasn't an avid follower of tennis back then but I was also one of those non-tennis people who thought Serena,Venus,Henin and Sharapova were dominating tennis day in and day out.

Then 2008 came. I began to watch tennis, and it soon became one of my all-time favorite sports to watch, especially the WTA. Until now,I still have no idea why I was drawn to Serena back then,I guess I was just born to be a Serena fan. :) There was something about Serena that impressed and shook me so much. I never thought I could be rooting for a player like a mad woman and being so emotional over a tennis match, unless Serena was playing in that match. Then I began to watch all of her classic matches with her trademark fighter display and that sealed the deal for me. I don't think I've ever seen any other player as competitive and tough as Serena. Serena is now my all-time fav WTA player, with Kim and Venus right behind but Serena will forever be No.1 for me.

Just stumbled upon this thread and thought I'd share my story. I've always been a big Serena fan even though I never really posted in her forum. I became a fan in 2002, i was 7 then. I remember that the WS and the Belgians were the Semifinalists for a couple of slams in a row. Each time i admired Serena's fight not only against Kim/Justine but also against her own sister Venus. She was so determined to get to that all-sister showdown and once she got there, she didn't give a shit who she was playing, she just made sure she got the win. So inspiring :hearts:

Just wondering if you could help with a twenty-five word or less on who's your favourite tennis player of all time and why?
Yours is probably Serena.

Cheers, Charlie

HI

I became Serena Fan after watching my two mental midgets lose constantly and Serena clinching the Grand Slams. I had to find a motivation to watch tennis after JJ and Ana would lose midway thru the grand slam so i decided to follow Serena.

She is the only one consistantly geting to the finals and in process keeping me intrested enough to stick to watch it even after two of my favourites have been eliminated. Plus she has a good personality and i find her attractive so that's a plus.

Annie.

Hi everybody, I'm new here!

I became a Serena fan back in '99 when she won her 1st US Open. She is just so much fun to watch. She has so much personality. And I love how she rebels against the tennis establishment and does things her own way.

Hey guys,

I became a Serena fan in 2007 when she defeated Maria Sharapova in the Australian Open final. I like Serena personality, her power. She is a legend. She is strong and unstoppable on the court. Serena is one of the all time great fighters. I'm her fan.
I would like to see Serena on the tennis court, because tennis needs Serena.

Serena, please come back soon!

My fandom with her went through a bunch of phases

'00 Wimbledon semis is when I first saw her. I was following Venus that entire tournament, and it wasnt until the semis when I found out that she had a sister. :o But I liked her right away.
Then she became my #1 when I saw her compete in that shitty match vs Jen in the QFs of Wimbledon the following year.
Her '02 Scottsdale run made me turn into a mini-stan and I started following more than just the slams.
But I didn't realize how much I truly loved her until the summer of '04 after the USO incident and the way that the tennis world was dethroning her after the Wimbledon final. That lit a fire up my ass and I've been a full out stan ever since.

As for why I became a fan, I could be here explaining for days. :hearts:

I always knew of Venus and Serena as celebrities but never followed tennis so I was not a fan.
In late 2008 my friend was watching ATP Shanghai Masters and I never knew he was a tennis fan. I learned the rules of the game and during the Australian Open 2009, the first Serena match I saw
was the semifinal with Dementieva and I was like Whoa, this chick has so much power and attitude, so the time I watched the final with Dinara I was like "I'm a fan now".

Hello fellow fans… I’m a long time off and on lurker. I became an admirer of Serena before she was famous. As a kid, I would spend 6 months out of the year with my dad in Compton. In the summer time I was allowed to go to the park to skate.

One summer my dad was so busy with work, I would go to the park almost everyday. It was that summer that I first saw Serena. She and Venus were practicing with their father, mostly on their serves. One day they were out there serving all day… from morning till almost night time. Hard work is something that was always enforced at my home, which is why I admired Serena and Venus for working so hard consistantly as kids.

Anyways, my dad would speak to their father from time to time. Richard always seemed stern to me… just like my dad was LOL. I didn’t see them after that summer anymore because we moved away to the valley for some years.

The next time I saw Serena was on TV in 1999 when she was contending for the US Open. My dad and I were fighting because I hadn’t decided on a college to attend or if I was going to go at all. I had just graduated H.S. (Go Tarter Babes... If there are any Compton H.S. people are reading this).

I believe it was Serena’s 4th match that was on. My dad came into my room excited (he is not easily excited)… he was saying “That girl is on t.v.! That girl is on t.v.!” I went to go see and yah, it was the girl from the park all grown up. I thought Serena was Venus at first but then the announcers kept saying the younger sister. My dad and I watched her whole run to the championship. We didn’t fight about college after that because we were too happy about Serena winning and her coming from Compton LOL.

I have been a fan ever since.

This is my first post so hello to everyone here.

To be honest I never cared about Tennis too much, but I heard so much in the news about the sisters and their smashing winners that one day I decided to finally watch a match. Serena just blew me away. Through the years I kept following her game as much as I could but it still wasn't in depth as my other hobby/love took almost all my free time. In 2009 after Wimbledon I turned to Serena again - for good. Since then I have been discovering things I never knew before and I am so happy Serena is out there playing again, because without her the WTA tour would be plain boring.

I'm not a newbie, but I don't think I've shared why and when I became a fan. I'm 25, and when Serena won the US Open for the first time I was 13, and just started playing tennis myself. When she beat Hingis, I was hooked. To have a black Grand Slam champion was HUGE...at that time we really didn't have a "role model" in the tennis world. Black athletes were known for football, basketball, and track - so it has been such a joy watching Serena and Venus turn everyone's attention to the tennis court. You see more and more athletes from other sports, as well as celebrities across the entertainment industry, watching tennis now more than ever. I used to tape all her matches on TV and study her patterns - the serve, the groundies, watching how she moves the ball around to get the shots she wants. I take things from both Serena and Venus and use them on the court. Funny thing is, people compare my game to Venus because I'm tall and have a big wingspan like she does. I identify with Serena because I'm the younger sibling in my family too. I love this woman, and always will!

I'm Luka, 17, from Serbia. Most of you guys know me. Know I'm a fan of both sisters and although that name shall not be mentioned here (yeah I know a lot of you are not fans) the elder is my fave.

And the only time in my live I have EVER rooted against Serena is when she plays the elder.

Love that girl. She's just the best. I felt in love elsewhere first but I know to give credit where it's due.

I'll try and come around more but sometimes it's hard...:lol::lol:

One thing I must say though, you guys are some fierce fans :fiery:

I'll try and come around more but sometimes it's hard...:lol::lol:

Hi everyone!

I'm Bryan and I'm from Boston. I <3 Serena. She's very inspiring to me. I was first intrigued by the sisters in 2003 at Wimbledon. I had never watched tennis before. I used to think it was boring just watching tennis balls go back and forth. They made it more interesting to me, especially seeing the two of them dominate and then collide with each other in the finals. My favorite memory of Serena is of the 2007 Australian Open. It was the first time I watched a single player through most of their rounds (and live!). Serena played with so much abandon, fire, and conviction for what she was doing I was overwhelmed with emotion. I'm still overwhelmed looking at video from that tournament. It was truly one of her defining moments for the ages.

Hi! I <3 Michelle lol. She used to live in the Boston area and friends of mine would see her but I never did  I went to 2006 Nationals hoping she would compete there, but she wasn't there. Anyway, Michelle and Serena are two wonderful champions in sports. It's great to see once in lifetime athletes that show heart and love for their sport. As for the gold medal, Federer has a silver too so Michelle's in good company :)

ETA: I used to make skating montages. I wanted to make one for the WS one day. This was one of my better Michelle montages: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVOsrh5ve4o

So I've been on this forum for about 8 years on and off but I have never actually introduced myself on here so since we have some new people posting I will take this time to introduce myself formally.

My name is Ivan I share the same last name as the GOATRena and Venus (No Relation that I know of ) so that definitely contributes to my die hard allegiance to them.

1st match I can really remember from Serena was the 1999 USO when she won her 1st slam and from then on I knew she was my favorite of the 2.

Starting with Wimbledon in 2000 I became a diehard fan. I would spend summer mornings and afternoons in June-July watching Wimbledon just because I wanted to watch Serena play. I even made my parents buy me a racket so I could learn to play. No one in my neighborhood would play tennis with me however because, "It wasn't for black people." I was raised the only child so after I would watch Serena play a match I would go into my garage and hit against the door/wall to practice and I would do this EVERY DAY during Wimbledon 2000-2002. Really annoyed my neighbors but I was like 9 when I started and didn't care at ALL. :tape::lol:

Since that 1999 USO match I have followed Serena's career very closely. It is amazing to watch her still on tour 10+ years later still owning the tour and notching her place in the history books. :worship:

Just discovered this thread :hearts:

Been on this forum for 2 months already but have been secretly lurking for over 3 years :oh: I can say I'm a pretty diehard fan as I only have 4 players that I really like after so many years of watching tennis, Serena is simply one of a kind. She has this intensity and competitive spirit on court that no other player is able to match. I remember I first got to know about Serena when I was watching the Miami 2007 final. I was like "ooh who's this fierce mama?" and I was intrigued. I started to watch more Serena matches over the years and naturally became a fan of hers  You guys have no idea how much her 2010 layoff tormented me because I was so afraid that she would never play tennis again. Besides Na's matches it's Serena's matches that make me so nervous like a terrible trainwreck. I still remember rewatching the horrific USO 04 QF and almost crying because she was so ripped off in that match :help: I would also stay up til the early hours of morning despite having classes next morning just for a Rena match, be it a R1 or a latter round match.

It feels good no matter what to just see her on court, healthy and playing. It just feels great to be a Serena fan because she's so full of fire and life as a player and as a person. :hearts:

We used to have the royal court here also back in the day.... we always seemed to have a bad reputation with the rest of the board :o

So true...

(For all the posters who weren't here when the Royal Court was in full effect):

We had 75 members that consisted of Venus and or Serena fans. The number listed signified your seniority and we all had titles....lol then it grew and we eventually had The Royal Court Awards, which was way more successful then I had ever envisioned. It was just so much so I handed them off to someone else and they kinda fizzled out, which is good cuz those awards were too time consuming (but fun)...lol

This was the original membership list for the Royal Court. It's funny but looking at it makes me realize there are so many posters I totally forgot about and who no longer post here. I guess it's out with e old and in with the new. The idea was unity and each of us had the name "Royal Court" listed somewhere in our signatures. Each member took on a name (somewhat connected to royalty or those old days of where kingdoms ruled).

My name is Kevin and I am a new member. I am a devout supporter of both Venus and Serena, though I am more so drawn to Serena because of her demeanor and her hunger. She is such a fighter and just so authentic and that is what I love about her.

It is such a pleasure to be among other people who truly appreciate Serena.

Hi everyone. It's nice to meet you :)

I'm Luka and I'm 18. I've been a fan of Serena for a very long time (basically since Wimbledon 2002). I started playing tennis at a young age and the first tennis player I liked was Serena. I instantly fell in love with her personality and tennis. I stayed with her every step of the way, through the good times and bad, but all in all, it's been quite an amazing journey.

I actually saw this site a long time ago and I've been reading it for years and years as I found it insightful and entertaining, but not until recently did I consider joining it. I look forward to spending time with people who actually love Serena as much as I do :hearts:

Obviously, reading a forum for years is not the same as joining it so I'm still not used to certain things. I hope I will learn fast and I hope I'll have your support and we can all get along well :)

Hi everyone

I have been here for a little over a year but I haven't really posted. Anyway, I've been a huge fan of Serena since I started playing tennis in 2008. One of the first matches my coach told me to watch was the 2007 AO Final, and I was immediately captivated. After I watched the rest of the tournament, I was surprised by the way the commentators talked about her, and the fact that she won despite the criticisms reaffirmed my initial love for her.

I look forward to (finally) joining all of you in celebrating Serena's career.

Well...you never know. I started back playing this year and, at that time, had only had seven weeks of lessons.

There's a former track runner (is it track runner? I always want to say "track player" lol) in my tennis group and he frustrates me because he chases EVERYTHING down. He has great defense but some of his strokes need work.

Haven't been in this thread for a minute, welcome to all the newbies! Our ranks have grown substantially through the years and its nice to see people in general finally embracing and appreciating Serena, better late than never. Its to the point now that if she ever did go back to IW they would probably give her a standing ovation showing their remorse and appreciation....lol (thats how much I think the tide has changed) And although IW does not deserve Rena I wouldn't be mad at her if she forgave them and played once more- so many fans would love to show they support and love her. I know thats an unpopular opinion but with Serena being as popular as ever and finally getting the support she always deserved think it would be special for the California fans. Guess they fuked it up for themselves though, so oh well...

I'm not sure about her returning to IW. Also it'll be hard to win IW and Miami b2b every year so she'll have to choose 1 over the other and it made her the Miami Queen she is today

Well im 100% sure she will never go back...lol just saying it wouldn't be the worse thing in the world if she did and making the point shes so loved now of days that they would definitely show their appreciation and it would be a nice treat for Californians. U make a good point though about Miami but if anyone could back to back hardcourt titles she could.

I don't want her to ever go back. Let them know forever how second-rate their tournament will always be cursed to be  Let them pay! Let Hantuchova and co. keep winning. (Though I will say, it's the mark of a great person to be able to forgive egregious treatment. If Serena does, I wouldn't hold it against her. Just seems extraordinarily unlikely, especially when IW hasn't done its own part.)

Doubt this very much.

I bet there are some racists dying for her to come back so that they can try to humiliate her. All it would take is just one racist yelling the N word at her and telling her she's not welcome. Why would she want to take that chance? Why would she want to relieve that 2001 nightmare?

I hope she never goes back. And I don't think her father would like it if she wants to go back.

I guess u are right, its just such a beautiful event. I've been to Miami, the old event in San Diego, the old event they used to play in Manhattan Beach, the event in Carson, the Championships when they were held in Los Angeles, as well as the US Open three times- and by far, the event in Indian Wells is the best! U can sit on the lawn and see Rafa and all the other European players playing soccer. Ur so close to the practice courts that i was telling a friend Roddick is so much more sexier in real life- he actually turned around and said thanks (i was the first black guy to ever blush). From the fan experience the selfish part of me would love to see her back there if for no reason to show her love- and i dare anyone to act a fool in my area...lol shes made mistake as all of us have and been forgiven the event is run by a brand new person so its technically not even the same- but I understand her reasonings for never coming back. Im just saying if she changed her mind I wouldn't be mad- even though we all know she wont.

Look at the Americans of a specific definition who were mad at Chrissie for even mentioning that Serena was injured against Ana. The same attitudes against a fellow American remain. Look at the treatment Richard Sherman is receiving - hate his outburst after the 49er/Seattle game all you want, but the racial stuff is where some people show themselves and are comfortable. As far as IW, if Serena's two championship banners are not up even with new ownership, fuck it, the city and surrounding area.
