We've all seen crowds really turn on an a player and really give them a hard time. So I was just wondering about the times where the crowd was just overwhelmingly positive toward a certain player. For the most part being from the host country usually endures you to the crowd but we all know that's not always the case. Here are a few crowd moments that stick out to me:

Steffi and the French Open Crowd:
Steffi at French 99- that's a no brainer, even before the crowd turned on Hingis they were overwhelmingly PRO-Steffi. All through out the match you could hear them chanting her name, they really loved her...

Steffi at French 89- (vs. Monica Seles)... I have this match on tape and on my tape the camera stays with the players during the commercial breaks and you can hear the crowd chanting..."steffi, steffi, steffi". During that match Seles was number one so Steffi was the underdog and the crowd, although gracious toward Seles, was definitely PRO-Steffi

Gabriele Sabatini and the US Open Crowd:
The US crowd seemed to have adopted Gabriele as one of their own and no matter who she played she always seemed to have the support of the US crowd. Not sure why she was so popular in the US but she most certainly was...

Venus and the Wimbledon Crowd:
No other crowd seems to be more appreciative of Venus than the Wimby crowd. It seems even when she's the favorite the crowd is still usually very positive toward her, at least comparitively speaking that is...

Kim and the Oz Crowd:
No surprise here, they shower her with cheers and have totally adopted her as one of their own. I wonder how the crowd would side with her playing a "real" ausie- something tells me they would still cheer Kim on to victory...

can't think of any other examples, so share if you've got some more....

When Sabatini played Graf at the Liptons in 92, think it was the only time I saw Graf throw the towel in

After Marti's infamous "half a man" comment about Momo, she was practically cast as the  herself in France! (Linzi "backpedaled" from a milder version of the same dig, and it didn't linger. Sister Smirk never apologized for anything)!

Martina Navrat and the Wimby Crowd:
I'm not sure if they were always rooting for her back in the days when she was playing Chris but they surely did love her toward the end of her career.

Monica Seles and the US Crowd:
After the stabbing it seemed as if everywhere Seles played she was an instant fan favorite, but more so in the states than anywhere else. Both finals that she played against Graf the crowd was overwhelmingly PRO-Seles. Actually it's usually like that for Seles all throughout the States....

Pam, loving your lion-in-winter long hair. Question: what motivated the pubic perm from the eighties? Were you trying to ensure that Martina would never be hot for you? Or was it a Republican thing?

StefWhit - Do you mean RG '92? Yes, the crowd was very Pro-Graf. I remember Graf saying during her acceptance speech: "I've never had a crowd like this before, never."

Who did the crowd cheer for in their '99 SF match?

I could do nothing to deny martina's love for me. The perm rocked, i saw a sheep like it once and thought I had to give the look a go.

oppps you're right about it not being the 89 French like I said but I'm not sure which year it was. It was the year that Monica was number one and Steffi was kinda having an off year (for her standards anyway,) and it was one of the BEST French Open Finals of all time and Steffi lost 10-8 in the third. That crowd was really pulling for Steffi though. I remember thinking, "oh the French must really love Steffi".

Who did the crowd cheer for in their '99 SF match?Good question! Like the poster above said, Monica is loved the world over, but at that time not only was Steffi the underdog but she was just coming back from surgery, not to mention they just love her SOOOO in France, the crowd was definitely pulling for Steffi (again).

Pierce gets a lot of respect in Australia. So does Seles.

recap of players and where they tend to get the MOST support from the crowds...

Oz:
Kim Clijsters
Mary Peirce

French Open:
Steffi Graf
Justine Henin

Wimby:
Martina Navrat
Venus Williams

US Open:
Jennifer Capriatti
Monica Seles
Gabriele Sabatini
Lindsay Davenport
Chanda Rubin

....Who needs crowd support anyway? I can't think of a crowd that seems to be really PRO-Serena- but that's OK cuz she doesn't need it- I have more than enough love for her to make up for the partisan crowds. Crowds are really fickle anyway, the US Open crowd didn't like Seles before the stabbing and the same goes for Steffi as well. The crowds really gave Hingis a hard time for a while- so the way I look at it is if you're the top dog and ruling the sport the crowds, for the most part, tend to shy away from supporting you. It's not until later in your career when you're no longer looked at as the favorite when the crowd tends to change and start rooting for you...
