Why is there so much attention given to her on the tennis channel? Why can she beat Capriati three times in 2002, but not anyone else. It sounds like she has a big serve and a big forehand, why can't she win???

Was Wimbledon 1999 a fluke? Doesn't she have a good solid game? I guess I am asking what happened or what does she need to do to improve or get back on track or even start winning matches again?

She has a solid game...her problem are her UFE, her weight, and her coach.

It's great to see that power tennis is far from being the ONLY thing a player needs in order to win some matches. A little consistency and intelligence helps ;)

If she has so many ufe, and I can see that she is a little thick, what doesn't she try a different game style. If she is such good friends with the Williams sisters, why doesn't she try to maybe move the ball around like them and then when the oppurtunity presents itself, come to the net or go for the winner. It sounds like all she wants to do is hit hard, is she that ignorant to see that it isn't working?

On a different matter, she speaks of herself like she is on the brink of winning majors and big tournaments, but she isn't even good enough to win qualifing matches. This girl is a little disillusioned about how she plays. One good result in a major doesn't make you great.

Whatever happened between her and her father; Dr. J? Do they not speak, and if not why don't they speak??

I couldn't have put it better myself, Darren! She must be up there with Elke Clijsters for the "most undeserved wildcards" award. (at least she did squeak through to one GS semi, though). Face it, Alex, you are SOOO last century.

They don't know each other.

She is just another kid fathered by an NBA player who never had much of a relationship with the mother and who was married to someone else. I think there was some sort of monetary support as there often is in these cases, but there was never any relationship at all.

no, she made top 20 a few years after that, personally i think she has peaked already, anyways, i dont see her rising any time soon, maybe the challenger circuit will be a good place for her to regain confidence.

Her "coach" is her wacky bitch mother who is a reporter for the New York Times. Shehas no idea what the freak she is doing when she is playing coach, and is about as arrogant and out there as can be.

Alex.

This is a bigger waste of talent than the situation with Anna K. At least Anna was maintaining a ranking of #8 before she started getting injured, and was actually climbing the rankings again in late 2002 before the latest batch of injuries. Alex doesn't even have injuries as an excuse.

I'd like to see Alex do well. I hate to see someone with talent go down the gurgler like this.

WOW!! A couple of years ago she was the alternate at the Year End Championships, just outside the top 16- why has there been such a dramatic change?!?!

I agree with U Leopard. I saw Alexandra's qualifying matches this week. And she hasn't got a fitness problem at all, her body looks fine and she is certainly not overweight.

Her problem is more a mental one : its seems that she has lost confidence on court. She also has to improve her attitude dramatically, in her lost match against Julia Vakulenko she was screaming at the linesman, discussing 8-9 calls that were all correct and called the refferee a blind woman ! She received a court violation warning for this beahaviour.

I was really sad to see this happening since I always believed in Alexandra and her current ranking doesn't reflect her talent but she really needs a more positive approach.

As for her strong points : definately her fast service that bring her oponents in trouble, her backhand was terrible all week in Antwerp, she needs to work on that.

as far as stroking the ball..Alex is actually one on the most impressive her problem is she doesnt construct point well.

I like seeing her name slide down the rankings. I want to see how low it needs to go before she decides to do something different with her game. Or is it all about confidence? She doesn't ever seem short of confidence. Is it all a front or is she for real?

I think the problem is match confidence, which is different to just general life confidence. Shes been losing a lot of close matches lately, to ALG 7-6 in the 3rd, also to Farina 6-7 7-5 6-2 and Cargill 7-5 in the 3rd, she definitely had chances to win most of the matches she lost but didnt take them.

I dont think she should change her game, it was the same game that got her into the top 20 last year, and its got her into winning positions in a lot of her matches, its just a matter of getting the mental edge.

It's NOT a front. That's the fucking problem. She's from the 'go for your shots' school of tennis. Which, as near as I can tell, means

1) If you're gonna hit hard, hit as hard as youcan

2) If you're aiming to the side, ain right at the line

3) If you think about a shot during the point, try it, not matter how stupid it is

She's go Kournikova's mental game. None. Just react to what comes across the net. And while her mother is very unpopular who with fans on the borad, (basically for daring to say out loud that racism exists on the tour) I can't blame her for Alex's results. Alex is an adult. She's 23 years old. 15 months ago she was a top 20 player.

If she can't see her game's falling apart, that's on her.

She's no more a child than Patty Schnyder. It's not somebody else's fault. It's her own fault. I recall a lot of post by people saying Richard Williams controlled and manipulated Venus and Serena. Turns out, he was just parent and coach, and when they wanted to move out of the house and spread their wings, off they went, just like all of us have.

If Samantha Stevenson's at fault, it's in not raising her daughter to see and respond to obvious problems sooner.

If this goes on, Stevenson won't be GOld or Silver Exempt next year. Maybe a year of not losing in qualies will finally force her to change.

When people say 'all so-and-so does is hit hard', I think of Stevenson. THIS is what you get for just hitting hard.
