View Full Version : Who currently do you consider to be the 2nd best Russian

Feb 20th, 2004, 10:53 PM
we just had a Russian showdown in Memphis with some who believe Maria being under-ranked is better than Vera, so in you opinion, who do you think is the better Russian to be considered 2nd to Nastya.
Nadia supposing her being healthy who can outhit anyone,
or Maria who demonstrated great talents
or Zvonereva who can win good matches
or Dementieva who should be the 2nd best according to her ranking

Hard to say. With a better attitude, Vera. With a better serve, Dementieva. And with more experience, Maria. It's a question of who can harness their weaknesses first. Hopefully the can all improve rapidly.

I think that Nastya and Vera are better than anyone else. Not only by their games, but, what is very important, by their ability so far to stay injury free. And chances are, in two weeks time it will be the first time ever when there will be three Russians in Top 10.

Maria Sharapova

Feb 20th, 2004, 11:36 PM
Vera definitly. She will soon surpass Elena and Nastya to reach #1.

I honestly think that Vera Zvonerava has the potential to be the second best Russian player.

First she has an excellent backhand (Nadia and Anastasia are both better though I think) and her ability to maintain her body free of injury is only going to allow her to get better.

...I thought the question was 'currently'...which would make it Dementieva... :)

Right now it's Vera.
If everyone is healthy, it's Lena.

I think that physically, Vera is the BEST Russian right now, but her mental game is so bad that you barely get to see her good physical game. I mean, no other Russian could win a set 6-1 against Davenport (although she was injured)!

I don't believe that. Myskina covers too much court.

Feb 21st, 2004, 12:14 AM
I think Myskina Dementieva Petrova and Zvonareva (and even Bovina) are very close. I think that Myskina is better right now, but I think Petrova and Zvonareva have games that will eventually allow them to go further than Myskina or Dementieva. They have a killer instinct (yeh I know Zvonareva collapses once in a while, but she's tough! ), those 2. And Bovina also has a determination which is not very common among russian players, unfortunately for them.

The others, Sharapova and Krasnoroutskaya still have a lot to prove.

1 myskina
2 zvonareva (with so much more potential to come)

Last year I expected that Sharapova will start the season the way which would prove she is the second best Russian, but I guess we'll have to wait some time yet for some big wins of her.
On the other hand, Vera proves more consistent and gets no.2 spot in my opinion.
In the battle for the 3rd spot I would award Nadia.
Dementieva needs to get over those shameful losses of 2004, Can't wait to see her challenging the Top-10. But I don't expect that to happen soon :(

I think Vera really proved something to alot of people today. She showed that she can come from behind, down a break early in the set and struggling, then wins the set and easily closes out ther match. She kept her head and played tremendously. I think that in the long run she will have a better career than any of the other Russians. She's young, injury free, and has some game.

Anna Kournikova.

If everyone's healthy, Anna's right there.

Poor Anna's back is still bothering her.

She better learn how to arch it properly for her next profession.

Feb 21st, 2004, 03:27 AM
Anna's back can't be that bad. Tennis is a physically difficult sport.

Are you suggesting that Anna isn't as injured as she seems?

No way, Jose.

Feb 21st, 2004, 03:29 AM
She doesn't want Birmingham again. She wants to come back healthy.

Bruna was more injured in their match at Sea Island, or whatever that 25k was.

Feb 21st, 2004, 03:31 AM
Anna did well at Sea Island. But your fave won it.

And, as we know, my fave has come a long way. 25k's to Tier 3's.

Feb 21st, 2004, 03:34 AM
To a Tier III semi. That's almost the big time.

I know.

If she keeps winning like this, it's #1 time, baby.

Then, Serena would also have to play Tier 3's, because we all know my fave knows she'll kick her ass.

Feb 21st, 2004, 03:39 AM
Your fave knows she is going to be #1. It's all about the confidence.

i almost forget about Anna Kournikova:)
