points away from dropping to 14. Victims of circumstances, or have they shot themselves in the foot?

Serena has secured her future with her huge Nike contract, not to mention winning four consecutive slams has secured her place in history.

Venus OY!! Where do I start, once again she showed up at the A.O. unprepared and got shown the door. She still has the goods to beat anyone across the net, and talks w/the same confidence, question is how long will it take her to pull it together. One good thing going in her fans favor is her Reebok contract is about due for renegotiation, and I don't think she feels she's left her mark (legacy) on the game.

I'm not worried about either of them. They just have to start playing again and get in form. They didn't lose their skills, they are just not match tough yet. Serena went from No. 6 at the German Open to No. 1 at Wimby the same year. It may not be this season that they get their No. 1 and 2 rankings back, but it will come. :)

On a similar note.... Monica is out of the top 200.
Next week, she's roughly 222.

WOW, how hard is it going to be for her to get back??

K-Lina should pass Serena in the rankings soon. After Wimbledon, hopefully. And assuming K-Lina can defend her 2nd round performance.

I really hate to hear that. But, Andre came back to No. 1 after being like 167 in the rankings. I'm just not sure that Monica is willing to work that hard to get fit and fight her way back.

She'll get an entry ranking of 18 and hopefully a special seeding commensurate to that.

After she sweeps the clay events, #2 seed for the grass stuff. :tape: ;)

Yep. :)

It's too bad that she's not playing Acapulco and Bogota.

Budapest
Estoril
Casablanca
Bol

ALL for K-Lina :)

No Bol this year.... was sold to Cincinnatti to be played first week of Olympics. So while K-Lina's digging for gold, I can watch some scrubs at a Tier XXIVMCMIX. :p

That's right.

I'm going to miss Bol.

But, at least I get to see Cincinnati live in person. :)

Shyperova will probably win it though. She's not making the Russian team, and she loves Tier 3's.

Wow, I'm gonna go there too. Well, I'm like 50/50 that I'll be there in Cincy.

Um is this a real subject for discussion? It's apparent that any player who does not play for 6-8 months will drop down in rankings. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.

Venus hasn't left her mark on tennis yet? She's won 4 grand slams titles, Not very many people have more than she does. She's one of only 13 number ones, and the first black number one at that. She made millions of dollars won 29 titles, two olympic gold medals and she hasn't made her mark? She also ushered in the new power tennis era. Jennifer and monica may have started it, but Venus took it to a whole new level. If she retired now would she be considered the greatest? No. Of course not. But she doesn't have to be. There are still some things she'd probably like to do, but she already has her place in history, if for no other reason than the fact people said she'd never make it anywhere near to where she was. I mean isn't that why Jennifer Capriati will be remembered? Jenny has half the titles Venus does, and a less successful career overall, but it's the fact that so many people discounted her and said she'll never get back to the top 20 let alone win a slam. There's more to being remembered in tennis than winning 1000 grandslams and staying number one for a million weeks.

yes, I agree, its one thing to drop in the rankings cuz you suck. but quite another to drop becuz you are injured and aren't playing.

I really think a lower ranking for the williams sisters, assuming tourney's don't give then a special seeding, is worse for the rest of the tour than for V&S. who wants to meet them early in a tourney??

I actually think its amazing that Serena hasn't played since July, right? and she's still in the top 10. speaks to the quality of her results...

Rankings have never bothered me. Before either Serena or Venus were ranked #1 or #2, we knew they were good. They still are no matter what their current rankings indicate. In this case, a number is just a number.

I'm sure they'll be back at the top when they are healthy. Anyone who actually thinks Venus is the #14 (or whatever her current rank is) and Serena is the #8 player in the world are kidding themselves.

That's what I'm talking about. It's not like they forgot how to play, LMAO.

I would MUCH rather meet them early - Venus in particular can be a slow starter, and both she and Serena are far more focused and sharp in the later stages of a tourney, even when healthy.

Anyway, as harloo says, what should be surprising to people is that she's still in the top 10 despite not playing since June.

I disagree Griff. I don't think the top ten current pro would like to meet them early in a tourney or a slam.

Justine,Lindsay,Kim,Jennifer,Chanda,Ai and the rest would imho much rather play those people then V@S in the quarters.

For instance, Momo would have a better shot at beating these players above then V@S. Justine would much rather imho face Jen, Linds and Kim before Venus or Serena.

Venus would not wish to play Serena early imho.

It seems that people forget about the head 2 heads and Venus and Serena have a dominant record over the current top ten.

let's just wait and see the williams back! or maybe they will never come back... how sad would it be?!

they are missed so much! i missed tough competition for the belgians! they haven't been beaten by any other player except themselves for a while now...

Besides the Belgians who else ranked above the williams have been in a slam final lately, not Amelie, Lindsay, Myskina, Dementieva etc. Says alot about how the rankings work, not how good a player is.

For me that is just insane...ONce agasinr ranking has nothing to do with talent!

well, Serena and Venus's rankings mean nothing, they already have special rankings, and the rankings wont expire unless they are used in 8 tournaments, unless Serena skips Miami, which i doubt she will, and does not defend the title which i think she will defend, might endanger her top 10 ranking and that is just a possibility, then i'll start to worry. Otherwise, i'm sure she'll do fine.

The one i'm worried about is Venus, she made a mistake by coming back when she is not ready, if she is given a special ranking, she has to act like it, if she does perform better than Lindsay with Amelie/Jen both out due to injures, then there'll voices soon about her rankings. I'm sure she'll be firmly in top 20 deep into clay season, but she has to start justifying her rankings by climbing back which i'm sure she'll rise up fast like a phoenix, but one thing is for sure, before Wimbledon, she should at least get a ranking in top 5, otherwise, her special ranking will soon be under a lot of heat.

No I don't think Venus has left "her" mark on tennis. In fact I would go so far as to say Venus has underachieved...
