View Full Version : RIVALRY!!!!! Is it getting personal??

QUEENLINDSAY

Well I just really found something fishy about these sudden withrawals of Top players in tournaments when they feel 1% below their level.

I just thought that TOP players are now playing the tactics of avoiding players in their zone specially in the court surface giving advantage to their opponents.
Is Rivalry getting personal now a days that Elite players dont wanna meet their fellow top players if they are not 100%.

I just miss those old rivalry of Hingis and Davenport where you can see them finals of consecutive tournaments fighting for number one spot professionally. They seldom withdraw in tournaments unless they cant walk anymore. Is it could be the body demand of game is increasing? Or is it just there rivalry thing these days?

These has been done of Williams sisters even before thus avoiding playing indoor surfaces and withdrawing into tournaments so suddendly and now seems Henin playing the same game. Dont get me wrong but I think Davenport just learned about this tactics from Sidney this year not playing Henin in the semis because of her minor shoulder injury.

I'm not blaming these players for their withrawals or not playing into tournaments. Its their prerogative not to play if they feel not 100% but I think its more something to do with Rivalry and not really into Injury.

Thats exactly my point!!!! When can we see again that kind of rivalry? They meet in finals and u never know who will win. I never heard any excuses from Hingis, she just says "I just cant play you" when she lose consecutively to Lindsay but she figures out in the long run again how to beat her also.

If these top players only meet in Grandslams, then I really find it boring. Seems to me these Top players now just cares for Grandslam and just trading off Tier 1's and tier 2's.

I miss the "old" days of tennis too. Where injuries weren't a huge part of the game (not to the extent it is now); when any player could win any week (OK, not really...but certainly more than just JHH/KIM/VENUS/SERENA); and when there were true rivals.

I'm not saying justine is afraid but I think its safe to say that she would rather lose this match rather than win it.

Kim is just one of the most dominant indoor players as of late and i think her confidence is there. Giving that situation also that justine is a bit sick, thus she withdraws.

Then you haven't witnessed the "great" rivals in the sport. Navratilova-Evert; Seles-Graf; Sanchez-Vicario-Graf; Hingis-Davenport; Venus-Hingis

You obviously missed much of those rivals...because Kim/JHH simply doesn't compare.

I don't know if players are running scared. I would hope they aren't.

I haven't read on Henin's injury withdrawal, I must say I don't much care. But I don't think players are scared of each other that they are avoiding playing in tournaments with the big names and rivalries. Fore me, anything personal would mean players getting in tournaments just so they could beat each other.

I'm not saying that players are scared.
My point is that Top players are now doing these new tactics.
They wont show their vulnerability specially if playing to fellow top players.
They only play on their terms and on their choice of time.
It could actually be their injury, really but I still smell fishy about it thats its more on avoiding fellow top players for revenge in her opponents terms.

My exact point actually is, Where is the number 1 and 2 players battling it out tournaments after tournament.

This is not to bash Venus or Serena but I have noticed now that for a long time they have been playing only a few major events...why...not really to keep from 'burning out' but it is due to the fact that the less you play, the less you lose. If Serena, for example, played 18 events the chances of catching her on an off-day would be much easier than catching her on an off day in the 10-12 events that she gets herself 100% mentally and physically ready for.

So maybe the other top players are realizing this.

Queen, when did you start watching women's tennis? Serena just started beating Venus in 2002 season. Before that, was the final at the US Open where Venus beat Serena. I think the head to head (please somebody with ready stats correct me if I'm wrong) is 6-7 Serena. That's a rivalry.

I don't know about your analysis, but I feel their is no real rivalry at this moment in women's tennis. Kim vs. Henin is Kim choking at the wrong times. I like Kim, but she must get over that weakness or she will never win a slam.

The old days are gone where you had a challenge at every slam, in 99 their were 4 different slam winners. The Williams then took over, and even though their were some great matches and matchups because others were still in the game like Jen, Davenport, and Hingis but the rivalry factor started to go away somewhat.

Now we have the sisters absent, Monica gone, Lindsay in the shadows, Capriati injured, Amelie injured, Hingis retired, and Justine winning alone without much of a challenge. So, just accept it for what it is and move on.

QUEENLINDSAY
Feb 19th, 2004, 10:57 PM
Yeah, theres no more real and healthy rivalry for now. I think Henin just made a right decision for skipping miami as it is the tournament the williams sisters prepares all their life for. as the same as the williams skips indoor season for they know that is where they are most beatable.

These tactics are killing the game and healthy rivalry. Players cares so much about their meetings now with fellow top players. You cannot see them anymore fighting for tournaments after tournaments.

There is still rivalry but its getting personal. its getting more on head to head and not winning the tournament.

Yeah they met in those finals!!! but I dont think they were number 1 and 2 by then and the drama was not there yet. As I have said I dont think Justine is scared or afraid, but I guess she does'nt care enough to win this tournament. Kim has nothing to lose here, losing to her in all of their rescent meetings thus Justine has the pressure in both their own country. Also its a bit disappointing for Kim not to get her revenge by Justine's withrawal. I dont blame Justine in this and she have the right to skip and I think she is learning the same tactics being done by the williams sisters before.

Skipping Miami is one big hell of a good decision. But as I have said, rivalry is getting personal and their head to head comes into a big account with their confidence. If Henin dont skip miami she will be tired by then by also playing Dubai and Indian Wells and she does'nt wanna meet a fresh williams while she is tired and its good she recognized those.
