I'm very much interested in the evolution of rising japanese tennis player Akiko Morigami. Probably because she hits with both hands both sides like my all-time favourite Monica Seles, and like myself.

So this is her own thread.I think she deserves it.:D

Akiko is competing in the Tokyo tourney this week. Here is her first round result:

Akiko Morigami (JPN) d. Shinobu Asagoe (JPN) 64 76(5)

Way to go,Akiko!!!! :bounce:

I am also a big fan of akko, I met her at the aussie open and she is a lovely girl!
I got to meet her mother and her manager type guy, it was a wicked experience and they gave me free tickets to the night matches for cheering her on.
Go to www.akiko-morigami.com (http://www.akiko-morigami.com) and post a message for her and tell them that eoin sent you.

Aww what great pics!! I saw Akiko live last year at Wimbledon in her win over Tammy. I actually went intending to cheer Tammy on, esp. as she has such a great record there, but came away a BIG Akiko fan! :p. She is so interesting to watch, and she seems a really fun, sweet person. Seems like she's had a nice start to the year, lets hope she keeps it up!

She's on a 3 match losing streak, so now's the time to get it together. She's had a pretty good year so far but now she's gotta string some wins together. She's had impressive wins over Granville and Asagoe and took Rubin to 3 sets for the second time, but then she has lost to players like Diaz-Olivia, Tu and Lee-Waters, all players ranked in the 100's. A very up and down year for Akiko but a good chance to make it an awesome year in Miami.

I've seen her play a few times, once live against Tammy last year at Wimby (1st round, Akiko won 3/4) Obviously you know she hits two-handed both sides, she hits it flat, short backswing, very nippy and nimble around the court. She can get great angles and has nice passing shots! Not a huge serve but it seems reliable. I suppose her weakness are lack of power and a tendancy to miss-hit (well IMO on what I've seen) Actually she can hit with quite a bit of power, although obviously not comparable with the top names. Overall i think she is a great, really fun player to watch and can't wait to see more of her. Hope this answers some of your questions!

Look at the match stats..... then tell me why mary played like shit.

Its hard to play a good match when your opponent hits 6 aces and twice as many winners against you! - give me a break.... no more excuses for big name players to lose.
Morigami is a great player and she beat Pierce hands down..... this was not an error-fest.

It was Akiko moving mary around and hitting winners.

No but that's what I mean, Mary usually hits at least 30-40 winners.
She almost did it against serena so she didn't play like she use to.
If she had played in an averge she would have crushed Akiko.

But as I said, congratulate to Akiko she took the chance when she had it.

I'm not saying Akiko would win, and I'm not saying Mary would win. But don't come in this thread and bash Akiko for beating Mary. A win is a win and your trying to take it away from Akiko by saying that Mary wasn't 100%. Who cares? The match would've been closer for sure, maybe Mary would've won, but maybe not.

As well, Morigami won 2 + 3. She must've played her worst ever, because your saying that Mary is so good (at her "average" play) that she could beat a Top 60 player (who's on the rise and playing great) EASILY...don't say that either..

I'm not saying Akiko isn't worth this win, she probably played good and thats fun for her. And yes, mabye she played her worst match ever, and this is one of her worst losts in her career. Morigami has so many points to defend at Wimbledon. And in the first round she has drawn Patty Schnyder...very unlucky for Akiko. She needs to win, I think. On her website, if you can read Japanese, she explains what her plans are for Wimbledon because of her injury. I had to use a translator, so I couldn't get much out of it, but if someone could go look at that and fill us in on what she's doing, that would be great.. thanks a lot and CHEER A LOT! :D

Akiko lost, 4 and 1 to Patty  :( I watched the match, and Akiko started well going to 2-0, but once Schnyder got herself together she was just too good in all areas. It was closer than the score indicates, and the good thing is Akiko didn't seem to be suffering from the wrist injury. She actually hit alot of good balls, but was just unlucky and in the end, out-smarted.

She will obviously drop in the rankings now  but lets hope she can have good year here on in! :yeah:

Akiko always losess in tough 3 set matches because she moves the ball around the court nicely... but not with killer power... also she has limited variety. Yeah.. it seems that when she plays against more power players she goes down, cause she can't match it ... If she had more power, I think she could contend against anyone really..

I saw her against Capriati on TV during Wimbledon and was VERY impressed, cause it's how I wanted to play my game, she plays angles so well and can hit those deep, driving balls, I was very impressed.

Kimiko Date saw the match...

She was very dissapointed because Akiko didn't show her aggressive play against Golvin... That was what she should have needed to win the match.
Kimiko thought Akiko has played really well since she came to NY...

next time!!

Akiko's message...

"She (Golvin) didn't do much in play at all! but I was the one who couldn't start doing anything. I regret many points!!
Well, I'll be refreshed, and head to the Asian tour now!"

He used to be a tour player too... i guess his highest ranking was like 200s??

Akiko's comment:

"She (Peer) didn't play like a junior player. She hit the ball very steady... (even though) I lost, and I have more things to improve for the season... I think I played ok for the first match of the year after long break."
