08 February 2004 - Sophie DANGER
In the first round of the Open Gaz de France Mary Pierce will meet fellow Nathalie Dechy. The match promises to be fearsome between the two French players.

You will meet Nathalie Dechy in the first round. Arenít you too disappointed to play one of your fellows as soon as the first match ?

NoÖ not all, it does happen. It is not the first time that we will play each other and it may not be the last time. Thatís sports. I think that it will be nice for the public to see two French players opposing one another. I think itís going to be a nice match.

You have already met each other. What memories do you keep from those matches ?

I remembered we played each other in Australia. Nathalie hits back many balls, she is very solid on the baseline, her serve and her baseline game are solid and she are not afraid to go up to the net.

You have not taken part in the Open Gaz de France since 2001Ö
Yes, thatís true. It makes me happy to come back. Thatís always a pleasure to play in front of your public, your fans and especially in France. Thatís different here, itís something else. Thatís different from Roland Garros. I always like playing before the French public.

You are used to face Julie on courts. What do you think about her as an interviewer ?

Julie is very nice and I miss her on courts, especially in the French team where we live nice momentsÖ I will not tell the stupid things we did. Thatís funny to see her like that now, with childrenÖ but thatís life. I am very glad to meet her again.

Competing against young Spanish Arantxa Parra, Mary Pierce suffered. Loosing 5-1 in the first set, the French player then raised her level of game and easily won (7-5, 6-2). She explains her bad patch in the beginning by too much tension in her return game.

Mary Pierce, what happened in the beginning of the game (Edís note : she was loosing 5-1 to Spanish Arantxa Parra)?

The first rounds are always the most difficult to get through and not competing since the Fed Cup didnít help. I was tense and worried in the beginning and then I calmed down and everything went fine.

What did you feel during the game?

Not playing for a long time and returning here, in Paris, brought me a great deal of emotions. Itís normal but my fans helped me a lot today.

You didnít go to Australia, therefore the Open Gaz de France is your first tournament of the year. What do you expect from this tournament?

A lot, just like in any tournament. But I donít put pressure on myself and I prefer taking one game after the other. I keep myself ready and then weíll see what happens.

Why exactly did you chose not to go to Australia?

Itís true that I wasnít injured and that I could have gone there but last year, I had returned a bit too early, physically speaking, and this year I really wanted to return at a moment when I felt I had reached a good level to make the most of it.

Did you watch the tournament? Did you wish you were there?

Yes, I watched certain games. And when I saw how it was going, I thought ďoopsĒ (thoughtful). But I donít really regret my decision because I did what was best.

Is this deliberate absence a bet on the upcoming months? On Roland-Garros?

Roland is, and will ever remain my favourite tournament. Every year, my aim is to do my best there. After Antwerp (Edís note: starts 13 February), I will have five weeks left to prepare myself so I will have time to train properly.

Your next opponent will be Magui Serena. A word on her?

Last time I played against her was in Wimbledon and I lost (7-6, 7-6). Sheís a good player and it wonít be easy. I hope this time I will win.

Playing a close match against Spanish Magui Serna, Mary Pierce moved through the quarter finals. After her second win of the event, the French player seemed to be relaxed. Ready to go on the adventure.

http://www.opengazdefrance.com/mediastore/gdf/open/img/p.gifMary Pierce, second match and second win, how do you feel?

Happy. Now, I am in the quarter finals. I was expecting a hard match and it was, my opponent played well. I am quite happy of my game level.

Is Playing in Paris, in Coubertin special?

Yes, it helps a lot, especially when the public is there and supports me. It different from other places.

Did you need this support?
Yes, there are moments you need it and it really helps.

Do you think that you are finding your sensations back and do you think that it will be hard to defeat you ?

I hope so (laughs)! I hope that I will get better and better. I can feel that match after match I improve. Tonight, I will relax, have a rest and prepare the match for tomorrow.

There is a huge poster above the court representing the French team after their Fed Cup win and you are the only survivor here. Can it impress other players?

Yes, I saw it. Unfortunately, Amťlie (Mauresmo) is injured and she cannot play. Nathalie (Dechy) as well. Thatís true that I ma the only one here. I can feel some pressure because I rally want to play well and the huge poster can intimidate othersÖ (laughs!)

Do you know Tatiana Golovin?

I know her a bit. She was at the Bollitieri Academy and I was there too. But in fact, I do not know her very well.

In the semi-finals there might be a full French game.

Why not. I think that the public would like it because it would mean that one of us will reach the final. (laughs)

Since the beginning of the tournament, there have been several walkovers and forfeits, how you explain that?

Well, thatís easy: we play too many patches. The new ranking system has forced us to play more tournament? Thatís a lot of stress for our body and mental conditions. I think thatís too much. Before it was not like that, we played 16-18 or 20 tournaments at max. Now, some tennis women play almost 30 tournaments a year.

Does it worry you?

Not at all. We all have the choice. I know myself and I will not play 30 tournament a year.

Mary Pierce ousted Elena Bovina. The French player prevailed 6-3, 6-4 over the young Russian player after playing 1h19 and six after the 1998 Open, she reached the semi-finals.

http://www.opengazdefrance.com/mediastore/gdf/open/img/p.gifIf Elena Bovina could resist to powerful attacks from Jelena Dokic in the second round in which she played each other, the young Russian player did not succeed in doing another achievement against Mary Pierce today.

Being ousted 6 games to 3 after 43 minutes of game, the player from Moscow the tried to reverse the situation in the second round. Being a combative, determined and winner over Anabel Medina Garrigues, does not allow anything to pass, then she erased the gap between her and the French player but without being able to go further and to dominate her opponent.

For her part, Pierce seemed quiet. Being reassured by her nice start with the wins over Spanish Arantxa Parra and Magui Serna, and satisfied by her tennis, the French-American player was combative, audacious and she was supported by her numerous fans, each time she won a point, Her Fed Cup captain, Guy Forget was also there, in the stands, to support her.

Being under pressure, in the second round, because of Bovina was determined to come back on the match, Pierce over passed the tempest by giving games but without being led. The she found back her domination and within 30 minutes she won the match 6-3, 6-4.

Thatís an efficient win for the French player who once again qualified in two sets for the net round. Six years after her win at the Open Gaz de France, Pierce reached the semi-finals and she now hopes to move through the final: ďI had a break for a few months and it really helped me, she explained at the end of the match. Iím happy but I hope that the week is not over, I hope to go on till the end.Ē

In 1h01, Mary Pierce, 29, defeated her young fellow Tatiana Golovin, 16, 6-4, 6-0, in the semi-finals to reach the final of the Open Gaz de France for the third time.

http://www.opengazdefrance.com/mediastore/gdf/open/img/p.gifExperience was a great help for this first semi-final of the 12th staging of the Open Gaz de France. Master Mary Pierce, 29 , defeated her pupil Tatiana Golovin, 16, who has just enter the world Top 100. The match was very expected and it kept its promises only in the first set.

After playing a first strong game with two aces, Tatiana Golovin established herself in the court and she challenged her fellow who resisted more or less to the talent of the player who has just reached the eighth of finals in Melbourne. The ďFrench RussianĒ player dared as usual, she can resist, thanks to her power and skills, against the ďFrench-AmericanĒ player who had to save three break points. Young Tatiana was very close to go off but Pierce came through each time.

And, as it happens often, at her very first break point, Mary Pierce won her opponentís serve after Golovin made a double-fault. Serving for the set, the winner of the edition of 1998 did not miss the opportunity to win the first set 6-4 in 35 minutes.

Before the beginning of the second set, Tatiana Golovin did the same thing as the day before : she went out of the court to see the physio. She might still suffer from her left leg. When she came back, there no longer a real game. Her game became less intense and she played a lot of balls out of the court. Meanwhile, Pierce played stronger. The French who won two Grand Slam went off to win her third final at the Pierre de Coubertin Stadium after playing 1h01. The master remained solid.
