This week Lucie is playing the $25K event in Bergamo, Italy. She was in Qualifying where she lost in the final round to doubles partner Katerina Bohmova. However she may not have played 100% because she was already assured of a place in the Main Draw thanks to a withdrawal ;)

In the First round of the Main Draw, Lucie crushed the Second seeded Nuria Llagostrera Vives of Spain 6-2 6-0

Udachi Lucie :D

Lucie is playing the $25K event in Poland this week, as her name was on the final commitment lists, but only a partial fragment of the Qualy draw has been announced so we'll have to see.

She should be seeded for Qualifying, but that's not problem as she's going to win the tournament! :D

Blah, Lucie withdrew from the Warsaw event, and hasn't played since her win in Italy.

But she has commited to:

$25K St. Petersburg, RUS
$25K Athens, GRE

Which both begin on March 22. So I guess she will choose the event which suits her better :)

Udachi Lucie :yeah:

Lucie is playing Forest Hills this week, she won her first round match tonite against Anna Smashnova with 7-5 and 6-3, she's now in the QF and plays against Serra-Zanetti

Also the draw for the USO is out, Lucie plays in the first round against Elena Dementieva who's the no.6 seed, will be a very difficult match for Lucie, if she might win she'll face Diaz-Oliva or Mattek in the 2nd round..
Not quite happy with the draw since i like Lucie and Lena both....

why hasn't Lucie been playing of late?
I wonder it too   but she is back this week at Moscow :D :bounce: She plays the qualies where she is the 5th seed. Here is her part of draw:

(2/wc)Sesil Karatantcheva v Maria Emilia Salerni
Alexandra Stevenson v (wc)Alisa Kleybanova
Anne Kremer v Galina Voskoboeva
(5)Lucie Safarova v Lisa Raymond

Too bad Sesil is in her part of draw  I like both  I think that if she plays at her best level (or at least at 80%) Lucie can qualify as Sesil isn't in a great shape (she lost very early at Filderstadt) The only problem is her health, if she didn't play coz of an injury, then she might have some difficulties to be back at her best level :scared: I'm impatient to follow her match on the live scoreboard tomorrow :yippee: :yippee: Jedem Lucie!!

Akgul is a tricky player so imo it's a promising win for Lucie, she has very good chances to take the title! :rocker: Jedem Lucie :rocker: Keep winning and taking experience indoors!! :bounce: :bounce:

Maret Ani d. Lucie Safarova 64 46 62
Lucie should have won the whole tournament
but it is indoors so I should not expecting too much from her; she has to gain experience there and so it was smart playing there ;)
Maret served 16 aces, so it was hard to break her

keep playing challengers, Lucie ;)

A man of few words, Berdych, whose partner is Czech professional player Lucie Safarova, is happy to let his tennis do the talking.

''He's quiet,'' said his coach Jaroslav Navratil.

''He's not a party animal. He's entirely focused on his tennis and Lucie helps him do that.'' Before today's final, Navratil had warned that Berdych could hold his nerve if the final turned out to be a tense battle.

How was Lucie playing? Was her serve holding up?

She was up a break in the first set against Jarmilla but was broken twice. In the second set she broke early but got broken back then it stayed on serve till the end of the set and she broke Jarmilla for 7-5. In the final set the only break was in the last game when she broke serve to win. She had a fair few DFs but not in the final set, she really cut them down an served well in the 3rd set:)

Everything else was really nice, Jarmilla played very well as well so that is why the score was so close, it was a great match to watch:)

I have just got home from the tennis and Lucie played so well:worship:

She just outplayed Schnyder, Patty only really had one bad game which was the first in the 2nd set when she got broken. Otherwise Lucie just played better. Lucie was only broken once tonight, at 5-2 in the 2nd set, it was a long game and she served a DF to get broken.

It should be a great semi between Dinara and Lucie because imo they are in the best form of the 4 girls in the semis.

Lucie played so well again today! Her serve has improved with each match, she started the week with lots of DFs but they are decreasing. Where has this girl been hiding? I knew she won 2 events last year but hadn't ever seen her play and I'm so impressed. I saw her practice on day 1 of quallies and thought she was hitting the ball great so it is great she has taken that to the match court. Lucie is also so sweet, she always thanks the ballkids for a towel and says please to them, so sweet! She has become equal number 2 with Dinara on my favourites list:p

I'm so happy she doesn't play Martina in the final, I think base don game she'd beat Martina but I was worried she might be a bit intimidated and nervous like Pennetta was in the first set today when she couldn't get a ball in the court. I think if Lucie plays as she has been she can win, but I don't want to jinx, so won't make a prediction. But I will say if she keeps this play up her ranking is going way up this year:)

Today she was broken and went down 2-0 early but played some great shots to break back. She was just too good for Dinara, so many clean winners, just like she had against Patty and Ai:)

Canberra draw. I like Lucie's draw. She does have Bartoli who won in Auckland potentially in the semis, but Bartoli has Kutuzova in round 1 which will be tough.

1-Medina Garrigues vs Q
Q vs WC-Ferguson
Ondraskova vs Bychkova
Q vs 7-Domachowska

4-Peer vs Sprem
Daniilidou vs Shaughnessy
Razzano vs Nakamura
Vento Kabchi vs 5-Vinci

6-Castano vs Bammer
Perianu vs Garbin
Panova vs Schruff
WC-McDowell vs 3-Safarova

8-Arvidsson vs Cho
Pironkova vs Q
Czink vs Serra Zanetti
Kutuzova vs 2-Bartoli

Lucie is number 35 on the new rankings:) Martinez and Molik are above her so seedings for AO she is at 33, so we just need one more withdrawal and she will be seeded:) Anybody know if there is likely to be another withdrawal? But then if she does get the 32nd seed she is likely to get a top 4 seed in round 3:o

Yeah, Marion withdrew and Virginie was promoted to the #9 seed and took Marion's place in the draw.

Good luck this week Lucie, another chance for a great result. :D

Injured Czech confident she will check in for tomorrow's opening round
Julia Whyte
Monday, 9 January 2006

Lucie Safarova is confident she will make her debut at the Richard Luton Properties Canberra International today, despite not training yesterday afternoon because of injury.

The 18-year-old Czech arrived in Canberra yesterday tired and suffering from a strained leg muscle after winning her third WTA title on Saturday at the Gold Coast.

But she hoped to get plenty of rest overnight in order to be fit and ready for today's first round.

"I will see how it feels tomorrow morning, I will try to practice and I hope to play here," Safarova said.

"It's always good to play matches before the Australian Open, but if I'm not 100 per cent ready then it would be better to give my leg some rest and get ready for the Australian Open."

If Safarova does decide to withdraw this morning ahead of her clash with Australian wild card Shayna McDowell she will be the third high-profile player to be forced out of the Canberra International due to injury.

Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli, who was to be the second seed, informed organisers yesterday morning she would not be competing in Canberra due to a hip-flexor injury, while Jelena Dokic pulled out on Thursday with an adductor injury.

It would be a massive blow for the Canberra International if Safarova was to remain on the sidelines.

The 18-year-old is in the best form of her career, blasting past world No7 Patty Schnyder and world No19 Dinara Safina on her way to the Australian Women's Hardcourts title.

The victory catapulted Safarova's ranking to 35 in the world and experts are predicting she could break into the top 20 or even top 10 by the end of 2006.

Safarova, who won two Tier 4 events last season at Estoril and Forest Hills, said the title was a perfect way to kick off the year.

"I'm very happy the start went so well, and I hope that it carries on into other tournaments as well," she said. Safarova is the second-highest ranked player in the Canberra International, after the Bartoli's withdrawal.

Safarova withdraws from Canberra

09jan06

LUCIE Safarova remains in doubt for the Australian Open after being forced to withdraw from the Canberra International today.

The Czech sensation, 18, who last week captured her third WTA title, on the Gold Coast, was forced out due to an adductor muscle strain.

The third seed was advised she could aggravate the injury if she took on Australian Shayna McDowell in their first-round match.

"I have had treatment three times today and tried to practice in the morning but it is not good," Safarova said. "I have pain when I serve and return, so, for me, I think it's better that I don't play."

The world No.35 still hoped to play at Melbourne Park next week.

"I hope I should be OK," she said.

"The trainer has told me to take two or three days rest and then to try and practice a bit.

"It's not an injury I have had before, but it has slowly become worse since the semi-final on the Gold Coast.

"Hopefully with rest it will improve." McDowell, the only Australian left in the singles draw, will now play her first-round match against Austrian Yvonne Meusburger, who has entered the main draw as a lucky loser.

I am back ;)

wow Lucie won Gold Coast
I never expected that as Dinara and Flavia looked pretty strong that week and Lucie defeated both in straight sets! Her first Tier III title and already title no3 in her young career - amazing start into 2006 :D

I think it is the right decision by Lucie to withdraw this week. She played 5 matches on top niveau last week and Australian Open are coming in which she has good chances to do well, so she should not play too much if she feels pain

Gooo Lucie :bounce: :bounce:

by the way, thanks for the articles, Naomi

It's indeed the right decision, but i am still shocked that Lucie's injured   :(

Really hope she'll be healthy enough to play the AO :), Get well soon Lucie, wishing u a speedy recovery

:hysteric: that would be so bad luck after her great showing in Gold Coast :hysteric:

BUT health is more important than a slam. Lucie has many slams to come in her young career and if docs adviced her not to play she should listen to them

Lucie

On one hand it sucks, cause she was in such a great form to start the seasong, but on the other hand she is still young and will have more chances to make it big at the slams in the future :yeah:

Lucie didn't withdraw:D

But imo her draw is crap:mad: Mainly cause she and Kim are in the same part and I don't want them to play:p

(5) M.Pierce vs. N.Pratt
I.Benesova vs. R.Fujiwara
E.Laine vs. N.Llagostera-Vives
(WC) M.Hingis vs. (30) V.Zvonareva
(21) A.Ivanovic vs. S.Perry
S.Stosur vs. S.Bremond
E.Birnerova vs. S.Bammer

V.Douchevina vs. C.Castano
L.Safarova vs. M.Sanchez-Lorenzo
L.Pous-Tio vs. (22) A.L.Groenefeld
(27) M.Bartoli vs. A.Frazier
R.Vinci vs. M.Shaughnessy
M.Czink vs. (Q)
Y.J.Cho vs. (2) K.Clijsters

I think a lot depends on how Lucie's leg is. I see her making 3rd rd and then Schiavone would be tough as she is in Sydney Final this week. But I can see Lucie doing big things if she is fit, I hope both she and Kim are fit.

A lot of people in GM say this draw is easy but that is just cause Kim is in it:rolleyes: , but I disagree, look at the names in there, Kim Lucie Mary Ana Anna-Lena Hingis Stosur Dechy Vera all in 1 quarter:eek:

I agree with Naomi, I don't want Lucie meeting Kim so early. :p

Great chance for Lucie to reach the 3r. ALG is under an injury cloud and isn't playing great, so Lucie would have a great chance against her.

But again, it all depends on how the leg is. :sobbing:

I also think it's not an easy draw (for Kim and for Lucie) all the more coz both were injuried last week  but I think that if Lucie is healthy, she should be able to reach the 3rd round without problems since Anna Lena isn't in shape.
Good luck Lucie  :D :music: :rocker: Jedem!! :bounce:

I love this team ever since i saw them play Navratilova/Groenefeld at the Ordina Open 2005, unfortunately i hadn't a good seat to watch, i had to follow the match from behind a fence becuz the benches of the stadium were full already when i was coming from another match :o quite embarrasing to follow the match like this, but Klara and Lucie played great, pity they lost the match..

But i am sooo happy to see them back together again :), hope they can win some matches, that would be great :yeah:

I saw all of Lucie's match against MASL, and she did seem to be hampered by her leg. :sobbing:

She was off her game too, made a lot of errors. Particulary on the important points. Although when facing set and match points, blasted winners.

Credit to MASL though, she just kept getting the ball back, and put a lot of pressure on Lucie to deliver.

Lucie is such a sweetie, saw her around the grounds often, and she was always smiling. :hearts:

Lucie is number 33 - a career high:)

Number 18 in the race:)

Also she is now the 3rd ranked Czech player:) behind nicole and Klara. Maybe Lucie has a chance to play Fed Cup this year?
