$10K Hull, GBR (Hardcourt)

1r - Emma Laine (FIN) def Matea Mezak (CRO) 6-3 6-1.

Doubles

SF - Bastrikova (RUS)/Davydova (RUS) def Mezak (CRO)/Koprivica (SCG) 6-3 6-3

Not a bad tournament from Matea, although the opening round singles loss is dissappointing. But Laine is a top junior player so it's not that bad.
Good week from Matea in doubles, got some matchplay under her belt and some points on the board.

Ajmo Matea :) :D

Today in the second round of qualies (first-round bye), Matea beat fellow unranked Croat Svirkovska 61 61. In the next round she plays another Croat, Klepic.

This is her first pro win in over a year and a half yet apparently she was just outside the top 200 in 2005. Does anyone know what happened to her? Bad injuries? Did she go back to school?

Regardless, good luck to Matea. Hope she can get back into the rankings.

It's been a long break, so we can only assume what hapened there. I'd give her more time than one tourney to make judgements; Lucic is just finding her form after like a dozen tournaments played and she had a much shorter break, so... It's important that she stays healthy and her game will fall into place eventually.

Akiki will be tough, but Matea will get a point for this tournament, at least (although, still no ranking).

She also teamed up with a Croatian youngster Doris Kuselj for doubles, and they reached semis and are playing 2nd seeds now. Since this is Matea's 3rd doubles event, I think she should get a ranking after this.

Matea beat Steiert, the #4, easily, 61 63. She is now into her first semifinal in years!

In the semis she plays Jovanovski, the girl who beat Njiric earlier. Jovanovski is on fire and will be very tough to beat. She's 16 and seems very much like a rising star. This is only her third tournament of the year. She won the first one, last month in Prokuplje ($10K) as a wildcard and only lost 11 games in five matches. She even beat the #3 seed 60 60! In her second tournament ($50K in Palic, last week) she lost a close match to Wienerova, who's ranked 250, 67(3) 36. Today in the quarters she demolished the top seed, Balsamo, 61 62.

I can't see Matea winning, but I wish her the best of luck!

ma re
Aug 23rd, 2008, 06:00 AM
She lost the doubles so hopefully she can concentrate better on singles now. Whatever happens it's been a good tournament for her, cause it really seems she's starting to pick up her game. Hope she can play a few more good tournaments this year and make a solid ranking by the end of it, and then start with some real results next year to get back where she was, if not higher.

Mezak is such a WASTED TALENT. She had brilliant junior career!!

Those are some harsh words from you. Unless I was close enough to know the details I wouldn't judge someone's "failure". Maybe she, like so many others, just did't adapt to the senior tour as well as to the junior events i.e. didn't make a good transition.

Anyway, she'll try to qualify for next week's Brcko 10k. Wish her all the best!

She won 7:6 6:4:bounce: Now an unranked opposition in R2 (the winner of wc/Popovic and q/Filipovski) and probably Veresova (ranked 723) in QF! So after Vinkovci 10k, this is the second tournament where she earned some points (3 in Vinkovci, here at least 1) which means another one and she's back in the rankings. If Matea loses--and including her points from last week's Dubrovnik tournament--she'll move up to #720-735. She's currently #826 so that will be a nice jump of around 100 places. If she wins, she'll move up to at least #700-715.

Matea won (but needed 3 sets) and will play #426 Cigui (career-high 406) who is 4 years younger and whom she never played. Seems winnable. But her possible R2 opponent is 2nd seed Voracova.

She beat Cigui in three sets and plays Voracova next. This R2 will push her some 60 places up the rankings to ~555. Finally some progress - not bad considering she'll be defending some decent points soon.

Good luck Matea:wavey:

She beat the 6th seed Kriegsmannova 0:6, 6:3, 6:1 (can't believe she got bageled by someone ranked 479 and who's with it almost at a career-high at the age of 24) and repeated last years result in Dubrovnik, reaching QF. But she has a nice chance to go even further, as she plays #794 Krunic. Sure, Krunic took out the top seed in the previous round, but it's still a chance for Matea. Hope she takes it.

Matea made it to the semis of Dubrovnik 10k (putting out second seed Perrin 2 and 1), so she's just a win away from repeating last year's result. Next opponent is a qualifier Van Bennekom.

Matea won it all! In the SF she beat VAN BENNEKOM 60 62. In the F she lost three fewer games but still upset the top seed, JANI, 06 75 76(4). This means she defended all 8 points from last year and added four additional ones, which will move her up into the 520-530s.

Matea is on a bit of a roll since late August, with a 19-3 W-L record and winning two $10Ks and reaching the final of a third. Hopefully this will give her the motivation to keep playing and the confidence to keep winning (too bad the year's almost over). She's defending only 5 points until next mid-August so if she keeps playing she should be able to move up fast.

Continued good luck to Matea. It's nice to have her back!

Lost 6:7, 4:6:sad: Still, this was a good tournament for Matea, she is in a decent form so we can expect more good results in the near future. She'll play another 10k in the UK next week, this time in Jersey, and she should be seeded there too.

Oh, I wouldn't be so negative about Matea. She ended last year in the 700s and will end this year in the 400s, even though she has played only 10 tournaments this year, all since April. In her last six tournaments (five $10Ks and one $25K) she reached four finals and won two.

What's more, she's defending only 3 points until mid-August so she has an excellent chance to continue to move up the rankings. If she stays healthy and motivated, I imagine we'll see her in many more $25Ks next year.

All the best to Matea!

In R2 Matea beat Karolina Nowak 75 61. With that she'll move up to ~475-480. Also, Matea has now won 11 of her last 12 matches. I'm sure that's giving her a nice dose of self-confidence, even if it's only at the $10K level.

In the QFs she will play the winner of Anett SCHUTTING (#735) and Danielle HARMSEN, the 4th seed (#476; career-high #466), whom Matea beat easily last week. This is a good opportunity for Matea to reach yet another semi.

Good luck, Matea!

After a disappointing last week for Matea (lost to Katarzyna Piter badly, 16 36, in R1 of the Buchen $10K), things are looking up for her. This week she's playing at the Bath $10K and in R1 she beat the #2 seed, Stephanie Vongsouthi 64 64. This is an excellent win for Matea, as Vongsouthi is #238 and has been playing solidly (reached consecutive $10K semis in the past two weeks).

In R2 she plays Piia Suomalainen. This is winnable for Matea, as Suomalainen is #571, with career-high #425 (even though she's already 25 yo), and struggled in R1 to beat an unranked 16-yo in two tiebreakers.

Congratulations and good luck, Matea!

Guess who's back :)

Matea is about to play her first event of 2014 this week in Sibenik, but will compete only in dobules partnering Martina Basic. Last year she has only entered 8 ITF doubles events, the last of which was in late May, and her last singles match happened 4 years ago (that same year she got her last singles win, coincidentally in Sibenik). Her win-loss record last year was 7-8, and she is currently outside of top 1000 in doubles.

I can't seem to find any info about what happened to her to miss out for all these years, guessing it could be something health-related, but it's such a shame for a solid player that she once was (a career-high ranking of 208 and 135, in singles and doubles respectively).

Hopefully she can at least have a few more good years on the Circuit as a doubles player exclusively, if that's what she's going for.

Best of luck Matea!
