I thought it about time that there is a thread wholly dedicated to Saori, as she is about to become the Japanese No.2 after the Australian Open :bounce: I will try and update all her results and news. Good luck in 2004 Saori! :bounce: :hearts:

Yey! Her ranking will jump up to around 40?
That's awesome!!

She gets in MD directly at Tokyo? or she still has to play in qualifying??

Grachka

Last commitment list I looked at she was in the Quals Draw, i guess they will take the rankings from before the Aus Open, which on the list was at 46. In that case she would need two or three withdrawals to get into the main draw. If it was taken on her new ranking, she would probably be in the Main Draw.

Good luck Saori! :)

Good luck to Saori for the Indian Open! I hope she goes one step further than her QF finish last year.

And I never realised she was a left-hander! Kimiko Date was a left-hander as well, but her parents taught her to play with her right hand b/c of culture and tradition. Blah! I'm glad Saori's playing with what she's comfortable with :)

Saori next plays Korea, where she faces compatriot Yuka Yoshida in the first round, and that is a dangerous match. Yuka has beaten her before and knows her game, and can upset Saori's rhythm. I don't have a good feeling, but good luck Saori anyway! :)

She has 31 points to come off before the Aus Open (from Pattaya and Canberra) which will put her there or thereabouts for whether she gets into the maindraw or not.

But frankly, I think if she hadn't decided to take the rest of the year off and tried to keep playing her way through it, she would have had little chance of getting past the first round anyway. She has a bucket load of points from the Aus Open to defend and she needs to prepare as much as she can for that. Hopefully she can do that in the maindraw, but i doubt thats important to her at the moment - she needs to be motivated again.

I think it is important to make the MD. Els said she might retire if she cant make it.
Saori has 150 pts to defend in Melbourne. She didnt get over 50 pts in any other tournament.
So if she loses in the QD, it'll could be a lot worse. But I hope she does make it though.

One of the guys that was at the Australian Open saw a set of Obata v Diaz-Oliva, and apparently Saori wasn't playing horribly, but was struggling with Diaz's style of play, with moonball bouncing high up, and forcing Saori to play a lot of balls at shoulder height, which contributed to loads of UEs.

Anyway, good news is that Saori broke the streak! She beat wildcard Miho Saeki 6-0 6-1  :D and now plays world number one Lindsay Davenport in the second round. Do your best Saori!

I felt very lucky to get into the maindraw since I was preparing for the qualifying this year.

I felt awkward to play Miho since we have been training together from Australia.

After the fall last year, I became very negative about my tennis. I wasn't sure how I changed my mind and everything.
I cancelled All Japan Championship, Izawa Christmas Open, and other year-end tournaments. Instead, I practiced and started the training from the beginning. My ranking dropped dramatically, but I switched my mind that nothing will be worse now, my ranking will just go up from now on...so I could feel more optimistic about it. That feeling really reflects the way I play now.

Last year, I really wanted to participate in Athens. I played many more tournaments than usual to maintain my ranking. That slowed me down since it was physically hard (not much mentally).

During the off-season, I went back to my home and discussed with my coach. I took a rest without playing tennis. I could take some time off thinking about my tennis. That was very good.

I never thought of quitting tennis. Although I was completely lost by losing so many matches, and didn't have any confidence to win, but today's win really makes me feel good and I am ready for the next match for sure.

On the second round, I will play the no.1 seeded player. Last year, I also played the no.1 seeded player, Serena Williams on the second round.
I've never played against Lindsay in singles, but in doubles. I know how hard she hit. As a challenger, I'll just do my best.
sorry for the rough translation.

P.S. Saori Obata Thread's very own contributor pcrtennis will be attending this tournament, so hopefully we can get some reports and/or pictures of Saori  :p

Hello.
It's been a long time for me to write a message here.
I just came back to Japan from a long US tour.
As you already know the result, I won the singles and was a runner-up in doubles (with Rika) at the $25,000 tournament.

During this tournament, it kept raining, and became a really hard schedule.
On Sat, I played singles 2R, QF and doubles 1R.
On Sun, I played singles SF, F and doubles 2R, SF, and F.
5 matches a day!! I heard that was the record ever, and the record will be on the guiness (sp?).
Anyway, I do not want to play 5 matches a day anyway (lol)...

Saori is back in action! :yeah: She is playing the Gifu $50K and is looking as though she is finally back in the kind of form we expect! She won her opening round against tricky Australian Casey Dellacqua 6-1 6-1 :D and then beat dangerous junior Marina Erakovic 6-2 6-4 :bounce:. She now faces Ayumi Morita in the quarters.

Will she win? Let's hope so! :)

I hope she can get back to the top 100 by the time of the US Open ;) Doesn't seem too big an ask.

I think Saori's scheduling has left a lot to be desired. :(

She should be playing Challengers, not WTA events, especially before the US Open. Why she attempted to quality for San Diego, LA and Toronto is beyond me. She could already be in the Top 100 again by playing the $50K Challengers on at the same time...

She should be taking advantage of the fact that she has nothing to defend until early next year! I don't understand why she didn't play Bali qualies either. I assume Beijing is her next tourney...

Saori has continued some good form! She qualified for Bangkok, beating Gullickson, Grandin and top seed Perry in qualifying, then she beat Mashona Washington in the maindraw, before finally losing to top seed Nadia Petrova.

Her ranking will go up to an estimated 113 (Eggy's rankings) :bounce: So close to guaranteed AO place now!

Any idea where she'll be off to next? She might go to Quebec or something, but might be better to get into Challenger maindraws in Europe - make sure of Aussie Open maindraw place.

When I went back to my parents last weekend I brought some of my tennis videos and DVDs back with me, including a couple of matches involving Saori :) One was Obata-Kournikova in Canada  that was a poor second set ;).
