Zuzana Ondraskova (CZE) beat Maret Ani (EST) 6-3, 6-2.

However that does not tell the whole story, as Ani actually led 3-1 in the first set. After the first four games, things looked promising for Ani to beat the on-form Czech (who, still had strapping on, which I mentioned in my reports on the Redbridge tournament last week).

Then, for no discernable reason, Ani's game collapsed. Notably her first serve % became very poor. Really Ani lost the match more than Ondraskova winning it.

I was disappointed in Claudine Schaul. She let a few close line calls which went against her really affect her game. You've just got to get on with the match.

I actually believe Schaul is the better player, but Zaric kept her cool much better.

The first doubles score was:

Elena Baltacha (GB)/ Anna Zarska (POL) LOST TO Maret Ani (EST)/
Galina Fokina 3-6, 4-6

Incidentally I hardly recognised Baltacha who had grown her hair considerably longer than when I last saw her play! It was good to see that Ani's disappointing performance in the singles didn't affect her doubles performance. Galina Fokina herself performed very well, and the pair's cheerful spirit during the whole match, showed they were clearly enjoyed their win!

I didn't stay to the end of the second doubles match (as I had to catch a train), but the score when I left was:

Sylvia Plischke (AUT)/ Dragana Zaric (YUG) V Zi Yan (CHN)/ Jie Zheng (CHN) 0-6, 6-2, 3-3.

It's very impressive of Yan and Zheng to take a set off the top seeded doubles players. Indeed Zaric made last year's doubles quarterfinals at Wimbledon with Matezvic

I can give you a little report on each match to add to the above:-

In the first singles SF, it seemed to me that Ani wasn't that strong mentally (it was 3-3 when I arrived, and I now see that she was 3-1 ahead before going on to lose the first set).

In the second set, Schaul served for the match at 5-4, but from then on seemed to fall away, except when recovering from 0-40 to deuce in the twelfth game of that set before losing that game and the set.

Baltacha and Zarska were 0-5 down in the first set, before making a mini-recovery which was too late; a better performance in the second set still wasn't enough.

Yan and Zhang, the unlikely opposition to Plischke and Zaric, played really well in the first set and won it as a bagel, while for the poor Europeans nothing at all seemed to work. The second set was better for Plischke and Zaric, with Silvia especially seeming to enjoy herself. The European pair eventually won 0-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Actually I was hoping at one point that Claudine would win her semi; she has an attractive game and looks like a good player. Anyway, best of luck tomorrow to Zuzana and Dragana. Also to Dragana and Silvia in the doubles.
