Williams, Davenport aim to put Australian Open disappointment behind them

February 1, 2004
TOKYO (AFP) - American former world number ones Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport put their Australian Open disappointment behind them, spearheading the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament that gets under way Tuesday.

It will be the first appearance in Tokyo for Williams, who returned to the women's tour at the Australian Open in Melbourne two weeks ago following a six-month long lay-off due to an abdominal injury.

Williams, who surprisingly bowed out in the third round to compatriot Lisa Raymond at Melbourne, was seeded top, with Davenport second, in the 1.3 million dollar event on the indoor carpet here.

"What I need to do now is just put my break behind me and keep moving on with the now and with each match that I play from here," said Williams, 23.

Davenport, 27, had surgery for a nagging left foot injury in October, which bothered her for most of the year, and missed the remainder of the season before returning to action in a pre-Open tournament in Sydney last month.

Davenport, however, withdrew from her semi-final in Sydney with a strained right shoulder, and then crashed out of the quarter-finals at Melbourne, both against eventual champion and current world number one Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium.

Davenport was set to defend the only title she won last season here. She also won here in 1998 and 2001 and finished runner-up in 1995.

Davenport's main rivals in the bottom half include eigth seed Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, third seed and Olympic silver medallist Elena Dementieva of Russia, and seventh seed Jelena Dokic of Serbia and Montenegro.

Williams was drawn in the top half with fellow American, fifth seed Chanda Rubin, Japan's fourth seed Ai Sugiyama, sixth seed Nadia Petrova of Russia as well her unseeded Australian Open conqueror Raymond.

To the disappointment of fans, former teenage prodigy Jennifer Capriati, the winner of the 2001-2002 Australian Open and 2001 French Open , pulled out with a back injury sustained late last year.

Instead, new Russian heart-throb Maria Sharapova joined the field, following her first WTA victory at the Japan Open in October. She was in the same quarter with Davenport.

I am glad Venus is in this tournie.

The following quote is perhaps what I'm most happy about right now:

"I don't always feel I'm appreciated for what I do. I don't expect to be everyone's hero but I do expect respect...so it was a refreshing change. You don't get that total respect anywhere else in the world."

She along with every player deserves respect and respectful treatment. I'm glad she's getting it here.

Venus, I hope you're ok. According to someone she's pulled out of this event. I hope she's ok cause I want her to defend the diamond games.

Venus, she needed the points

Venus is out. She apparently has some sort of leg injury, it doesn't seem to be too serious though. I hope she will be able to play and defend her title in Antwerp.
