Schett comes back for Bali win
September 08, 2003, wtatour.com :
Austrian Barbara Schett saved five match points to defeat Japan’s Akiko Morigami on the opening day of the $225,000 Wismilak International in Bali, Indonesia.
Schett, unseeded this week but a former Top 10 player, overcame a nailbiting conclusion to the second set, saving all five match points while serving in the ninth game. Despite winning the second set and serving for the match at 5-4 in the third, Schett saw Morigami surge back into contention, leading 5-2 in the final set tie-break. The Austrian staged her own last gasp comeback, reeling off the next five points for a highly entertaining win.
In other first round matches, Ashley Harkleroad became the first seeded casualty of the event. The No.9 seed was outplayed by Japan’s Saori Obata, a quarterfinalist here last year, falling 63 62. Obata, high on confidence after a third round finish at the US Open, meets Schett in the second round.
No.8-seed Yoon Jeong Cho nearly followed Harkleroad out of the event on Monday. The Korean escaped a tight second set before defeating American Jill Craybas 46 76(3) 62.
In the last singles match of the day, Indonesian wildcard Wynne Prakusya fell in a see-sawing battle with German Anca Barna. The home favorite led 5-2 in the first set before losing it 7-5, then recovered from 5-2 down in the second to lead 6-5. However, Prakusya was treated for heat illness late in the match and eventually went down 75 76(4).
