Re: Perdana - First!!!

Last October, I met the Tournament Director in Jakarta and he told me that for sure Hantuchova will return. Last September, after her 1st round exit, Dani extended her stay until a day after the finals.

The TD said also that he was going to Madrid to meet all 8 players and the doubles' pairs. I would love to have Hingis or Clijsters in Wismilak 2007!!!

Also the return of beauties: Ivanovic, Poutchkova!

The return of Asians: Tammy, Li Na, Zheng Jie, Nakamura, Fuda, Takao, Hsieh Su-Wei! plus Europeans:Tamaela, Jankovic!

Would be cool to have: Tulyaganova, Chan Yung Jan, Golovin!!!

Re: Perdana - First!!!

After Wismilak departure, now officially Bank Commonwealth Tennis Classic 2007!

Today, I attended the presscon of WTA Bali Tour at Grand Hyatt Hotel Jakarta. The presscon started at 2.30 pm with introduction by the tourney director, Mr Kevin Livesey. After 13 years of Wismilak as the sponsor, eventually they handed over to Aussie base Bank Commonwealth to be its major sponsor of this tier 3 A tourney to be held at Grand Hyatt Hotel, Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia.

Here, are the early committed players:

1. Svetlana Kuznetsova (WTA 3) - If she plays Fed Cup for Russia in the final, then she will be absent
2. Jelena Jankovic (WTA 5)
3. Nadia Petrova (WTA 12) - from recorder, Nadia's voice echoed: see you in Bali!
4. Daniela Hantuchova (WTA 13)
5. Patty Schnyder - from recorder, Patty's voice also can be heard - see you again in Bali! She passed the message also that Bali is always the 1st tourney she entered in the beginning of the year when she fills out an entry form!
6. Tatiana Golovin (WTA 16) - Tatiiiii...please, stay healthy!!!
7. Francesca Schiavone (WTA 28)
8. Michaella Krajicek (WTA 40) - ugh yeah, Dutch or Czech lady???
9. Zheng Jie (WTA 52)
10. Alicia Molik (WTA 58)
11. Flavia Pennetta (WTA 67)

Under negotiation: Ana Ivanovic and other Chinese players at Wimby later...At the lounge out of the Krakatoa room, Ana was in the big poster as Adidas gal with the newest outfit...

I have concerned all this time with Wismilak. Wismilak is a tobacco company and it is risky to sponsor such tennis tourney. Actually, Wismilak is still involved as part of the committee and co-sponsor. Mr Willy Walla will stay as the Chairman of the tourney. Bank Commonwealth as of now is committed for the first 2 years and they will have bigger meeting in June or July, Bank C'wealth is likely to extend its sponsorship to additional 3 years, so total of 5 years.

The president of Indonesian Tennis Association was there out of surprise by many. She was actually the one who told the floor about the history of the tourney. Back in 1993, when she was an official in ITA, she met Mr Livesey and they looked for a sponsor for 25K but then Mr Livesey hooked-up with Mr Walla, CEO of Wismilak and they began their partnership until today. 2 years ago, Mr Walla's wife, Maria Catharina Rosalina Ali was diagnosed with cancer and immediately, Mr Walla's family asked him to let go the tourney. But Mr Walla kept on his commitment. Last Wednesday, on May 22, 2007 - Mrs Walla passed away. She will be buried tomorrow in Surabaya. Deepest condolences to Mr Walla and family. His legacy will be treasured indeed.

As always, the committee will give 1 WC MD and WC Qual to Indonesian players. Mrs Widjaja seemed so sure that Sandy Gumulya would get it. LOL...

Video was shown also about 13 years of Wismilak. From 1994 till 2006 full of images of winners of course.

The participants of this presscon all got goodie bag full of merchandises - pen from Bank C'wealth, Bank C'wealth's writing pad, 2 baseball caps from Sony Ericsson and Bank C'wealth, t-shirts from Wismilak (designed by Adidas) and also from Sony Ericsson, and a drinking bottle black or grey from Adidas.

There were also door prizes for all the participants today. 2 cellphones by Sony Ericsson were given out for the lucky ones.

All in all, it was well-organized presscon despite the big loss of Mr Walla's wife.

So... the tournament is to be held at the Grand Hyatt?

Checking the website, I see no tennis facilities. Where will the matches be played? How can it handle this, especially so many matches in 1R and 2R?

I assume Grand Hyatt will be the official/players' hotel?

Please let me know!

If France wins their Fed Cup match against Italy, Tati will not be available for Bali.

I'm still thinking whether I should go this year since I have plans with my friends, but if Tati plays here, I'm definitely going.

this is the website: http://www.bali.grand.hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels/index.jsp

and it is written -
KRIYA SPA - NOW OPEN!

Kriya is inspired by the magnificent architecture of an ancient Balinese water palace. Each spa villa is set in a tranquil courtyard with water features, offering twin indoor treatment facilities, private outdoor wet treatment area, a traditional relaxation bale, custom designed soaking tub and plunge pool for achieving true wellness in a soothing environment. Kriya spa rituals at Grand Hyatt Bali celebrate authentic Balinese healing forms and offer an array of "true healing experiences" within the luxurious environment of 24 exotic spa villas.

The hotel also offers a complete range of other activities such as shopping, swimming, beach, sea activities, golf and tennis to name a few. Camp Nusa caters to our younger guests providing organised activities include fish feeding, sports and games.

The 3 tennis courts have been there for a long time but they have moved the location and they indeed do refurbishment every year just for the sake of the tourney. I go to Bali often especially I see the courts just right before the tourney being held and of course during the tourney...I assume you have been following this tourney...

Grand Hyatt in Nusa Dua has been doing renovation for several years to upgrade their facilities...Last year, their ball room was still under reconstruction...it should be the biggest ball room in the whole Bali...

For main draw, all these years since 2001 they have no problem to hold 1st rd, 2nd rd...For main draw, the 1st match will not begin until 3 pm Bali time everyday...

I hope, you have better understanding now...

And yes, Grand Hyatt Nusa Dua is the official hotel for players/coaches etc...

For foreign players, all these years, they have been getting up to US $ 1,000 reimbursement for their airfare...and after a player loses, she gets extension for free hotel room up to 2 days...These all were the services that Wismilak International has done since 2001 till last year...and I assume, the new sponsor Commonwealth Bank will continue to do so...

Thanks for the info; that helps somewhat.

I had just considered going, since I'm thinking about taking a long trip, and I could combine Bali with some other visits.

No, I've not followed this tournament before, in particular.

I'm going to make a reservation at the Grand Hyatt, just in case. (It can be cancelled without fee, in advance. ) It's probably a good idea to do it now because the rates might go up soon.

Do you recommend staying there, or another place? Somewhere that is very nice but a better value, and is convenient to the tournament, but also to other things to do in Bali. Also is it easy to get around without driving... taxis or easy enough to walk? I studied a map last night, and I see I should stay right in Nusa Dua (not Kuta or other location); do you agree? There are a lot of hotels a small distance from the Hyatt, up on the peninsula... are those convenient? It's hard to understand the distance and the logistics.

Appreciate your advice.

Thanks. I'll do some more research and deciding - a lot depends on my work, and I'll have more info coming to me about that in the next month - then get back to you.
