Salerni in Hobart!

Tour rules mean red-hot rookie Salerni must rest

January 16, 2004

Tennis rookie Maria Emilia Salerni will pocket a cheque in the next 48 hours but might have had a bigger pay day next week at the Australian Open.

The Argentinian qualifier was preparing last night to make it seven wins from seven matches against Amy Frazier in the Hobart International.

Salerni was expected in Melbourne yesterday for the start of the Open qualifiers.

But, as 96 players began battling it out for 12 Open spots, the youngster knew that the biggest performance of her career would be followed by a forced break.

Tennis Australia spokesman John Lindsay said that Salerni would have been aware of the position. "It's an unfortunate situation but that's the nature of the tour," said Lindsay.

However, she remains philosophical about the potentially expensive outcome.

"To me, the Australian Open is far away," said Salerni.

"I'm focusing on this tournament and I'm happy to do that as it's my best-ever performance."

I am glad she reached the Semis after qualifying. The most important thing for Pitu is to keep this level for the entire season, and improve her ranking.

Vamos Pitu!!!
