17-year-old Veronica Cepede is the first Paraguayan woman since Rossana de los Rios to reach the final of a WTA or ITF tournament!
She will play the final of $10,000 Bauru in Brazil tomorrow against Brazilian Vivian Segnini. :D

Veronica is a very sweet and humble girl and a very gifted tennis player. She can generate a solid amount of power, a great forehand and good mental strength too, and although she can become frustrated with herself, this sometimes works for her. She has been as high as #12 in juniors. Her best win to date was over Catalina Castano at Fed Cup this year. :)

Currently ranked 1000, but this is just her second tournament of the year.

Her path to the final this week:
Final: Cepede Royg vs. Vivian Segnini(4)
Semifinal: Cepede Royg def. Emilia Yorio(5) 62 62
Quarterfinal: Cepede Royg def. Fernanda Faria 60 60
Second Round: Cepede Royg def. Nathalia Rossi(1) 60 63
First Round: Cepede Royg def. Andressa Garcia 36 63 63

Great to see a Paraguayan coming up the rankings!!

A recent photo of Veronica with Zsofia Susanyi, Noppawan Lertcheewakarn and Elena Bogdan at the Junior US Open this year.

Good luck in your WTA career Veronica! :worship: :D

Re: Verónica Cepede Royg - Paraguayan Prospect

Nice to see you guys here! :D

Here's a pic of her with the Bauru trophy:

This is really great news. Not only is it wonderful she has won her first title, these were even her first victories of the year, after a disappointing time on the Junior circuit (7 match losing streak). She has silenced her critics, and shown a great level of maturity - no signs of nerves in her first final. It just shows that she has progressed dramatically all year, despite the losses, and this is why she shows great promise.

As the Paraguayan press is saying, "It is so that the title gained by Veronica not only came to shut up those dissident mouths, but, most importantly, it returned to print new forces to her in the development process that she is experimenting. It is known, in this stage, that the results must be analyzed with much moderation, because what can seem a failure or one " bad racha" , in terms of results, can well be seedtime of a successful future. And that is exactly what is happening with Veronica. To work to lose and to lose to grow. Thus the metamorphosis could be transformed through where she has had to become the present number one of Paraguay and number two of South America in juniors. This period (2009) was necessary to fortify the roots of her growth and to progress like a tennis player, always thinking not about today, nor tomorrow, but in the day after tomorrow. A vision in the long term. Time to the time. Who advances with tranquillity, will arrive far. Those seem to be the paradigms of Veronica in this 2009.

Now, it will be a moment for celebrating, but, also, quickly to retake the work and to continue striving by far professionalism. That is the method that allowed her to arrive to where she is today, that is to say, among the elite of junior South American tennis. The important thing will be that the good work with her grounded feet stays. Veronica was not worse by not to have won a match in all 2009 and now that left champion either is not the best one. She is the same, only that with more maturity, a new landmark in its race and, most important, with a great projection to future. The results will continue arriving. It is thing of time and work."

Sorry for the rough translation. Vero is now in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and will play #2 seed Andrea Koch in the first round. Buena Suerte Vero!!

Re: Verónica Cepede Royg - Paraguayan Prospect

Oh I forgot to mention, Veronica (and that photo) are featured on the main pages of the most important Paraguayan newspapers. This is great considering Paraguay has had some good results in sports this week (and you know how football mad Paraguayans are). I don't know if you guys remember Ramon Delgado (he beat Agassi and Sampras once) who, on the verge of retirement, won his first challenger in 2 years in Asuncion last weekend as well. Paraguay deserve a new tennis star, and Veronica definitely seems to be the most promising since Rossana. Even the press call Veronica "Negra"...she seems like maybe she has Guaraní blood? Royg sounds like a Guaraní name.

Very nice article and pics. Thanks for posting :bounce:. Thats a pretty nice trophy for a 10K .

Also, yes...i remember Ramon. I've seen him play quite a bit Team Tennis on TV over the past few years. He still has a really solid game and an amazing serve :worship:. I've heard he's had shoulder problems, so its good to see he won a Challenger last week :D. Maybe he'll give it one more try in 2010 :bounce:

I was thinking the same thing...very nice trophy for a $10K!
Ramon has been playing Team Tennis?? What is that? I hope he'll play one more year next year too!

Vero in $10K Santa Cruz this week:

Semifinals: Cepede Royg vs. (5) Jara-Lozano
Quarterfinals: Cepede Royg def. Pirovani 63 63
Second Round: Cepede Royg def. (WC) Miranda 63 36 61
First Round: Cepede Royg def. (LL) Balige 61 60

A solid week so far. :D Jara-Lozano should be difficult today though. Hopefully Vero can come through in straight sets and be fresh for a final. Buena Suerte!

Some things she said earlier today about her last couple of weeks and the match against Jara-Lozano today:
:hearts: She seems confident...another win here would see her almost into the top 600 I think!

Re: Verónica Cepede Royg - Paraguayan Prospect

Its good to see her having another solid week :).

Team Tennis was created by Billie Jean King. There are about 8 or so teams that consist of both male and female players. They don't play full sets ( usually to 5 ). Its pretty fun and the courts are really cool. Here's a You Tube vid on a match =)

Re: Verónica Cepede Royg - Paraguayan Prospect

Thanks Heath...I think i've seen that before...is that the format where there was a big argument between McEnroe, Poutchkova, Huber I think? I can't remember what happened but someone tried to hit the volleyer on the serve...it was a mixed doubles match and sounds like that could have been Team Tennis.

Veronica is into the final in Santa Cruz!!
She defeated #5 seed Lucia Jara-Lozano 3-6 6-2 6-3 today and will take on #1 seed Vivian Segnini once again in the final! Hopefullly the result will be the same!

Congratulations Veronica!!!!

For the first time in history, Paraguay will host the Fed Cup next year!!! :D

Re: Verónica Cepede Royg - Paraguayan Prospect

She won her second title today, trounced the top seed Segnini again, this time 6-2 6-2!
Fantastic!!! She will be top 700 now!! :worship:

Now she'll have a week off, and then head to Buenos Aires. Maybe it will be tough...but actually, I think the Argies and the entire draw had better watch out- Vero is ruthless at the moment!! And it's great the $10K Asuncion is coming up too...a victory there would be sweet! But one thing at a time.

Congratulations!!! Hopefully we'll have some pics soon

Re: Verónica Cepede Royg - Paraguayan Prospect

Haha...i didn't notice the shape of the trophies...you're right! Looks like I was a bit confused with the scheduling, $10K Asuncion doesn't start until November 16, and Veronica will compete in $10K Itajai this week!

Here is her draw:
DUARTE, Ana-Clara (BRA) 1 vs BARBOSA-COSTA SILVA, Gabriella (BRA)
CEPEDE ROYG, Veronica (PAR) vs WC HADDAD, Stefania (BRA)
WC GUIMARAES BUENO, Flavia (BRA) vs COSTA MELGAR, Cecilia (CHI)
Q SILVA, Camila (CHI) vs SEGNINI, Vivian (BRA) 6
SALUT, Aranza (ARG) 3 vs WC ANDREAZZA, Giulia (BRA)
Q GARCIA, Priscila (BRA) vs CHENG, Natalia (BRA)
BRITO, Fernanda (CHI) vs GONCALVES, Paula Cristina (BRA)
GARCIA, Andressa (BRA) vs FURLANETTO, Vanesa (ARG) 8

CASTIBLANCO DUARTE, Karen Emilia (COL) 7 vs Q GUENO, Barbara (BRA)
Q BARAN, Ana (BRA) vs LOTUFFO, Natasha (BRA)
Q MIRO, Isabela (BRA) vs Q SOUZA, Karina (BRA)
HERMENEGILDO, Fernanda (BRA) vs BUA, Tatiana (ARG) 4
VAISEMBERG, Roxane (BRA) 5 vs FARIA, Fernanda (BRA)
ALBUQUERQUE, Monique (BRA) vs Q SEGUEL, Daniela (CHI)
WC CÉ, Gabriela (BRA) vs Q LASKUTOVA, Viktoria (RUS)
BORGES, Flavia (BRA) vs AUROUX, Mailen (ARG) 2

I don't think Ana Clara Duarte is in the best of form however Salut and Furlanetto are ones to watch out for. Auroux is also enjoying a good year so she would be difficult should they face in the final! Never know what to expect with Vaisemberg either. Best of luck Vero!! Hope she'll just get at least a few wins under her belt so she'll feel confident going into her home tournament next week, where I expect there'll be a lot of pressure on her...not that there should be! Anyway one week at a time.
Mucha suerte

Re: Verónica Cepede Royg - Paraguayan Prospect

She won over Estefania Donnet today, 6-0 6-2! :D :yeah: :) Donnet is not such a bad opponent either, one of the tougher ones. Next will be tougher though against the #7 seed Andrea Koch! Vero should win...she must have played well today and should feel strong and fresh. Mucha suerte!!!

Re: Verónica Cepede Royg - Paraguayan Prospect

She lost 6-4 6-4 to Koch :( Quite an unexpected loss again. I expect she'll be very disappointed with that.

Re: Verónica Cepede Royg - Paraguayan Prospect

She ended up playing $10K Lima this week too :bounce:

She won today 6-3 6-1 :bounce: :yeah: She has a good draw and is seeded for the first time, #7. She should at least make the Semifinals! Sigue asi Vero!
