Clarisa Fernandez, the 2002 French Open semi-finalist, will play her fifth match at Roland Garros on Wednesday against Virginie Razzano looking to exact revenge over the Frenchwoman for their one career meeting to date in Bali thee seasons ago. Eurosport caught up with the Argentine qualifier.
Wednesday's order of play
Fernandez, who won three matches to qualify for the main draw, beat Tatiana Panova in the first round, proper, 6-3 6-2.
“I am really happy,” Fernandez told Eurosport immediately after the match.
“I had a really tough time in the qualifying to get here.
“I had to save a match point against a Spanish opponent so I am really happy that I could improve my game today and play with more confidence and have an easy match, which is the most important thing in the early rounds."
With a world ranking of 356 at the start of the season, Fernandez has competed mainly on the ITF satellite and challenger circuit in order to improve her ranking.
The Argentine has improved her ranking to 214, but there is a long way to go before she reaches her career high of #26.
Shoulder tendentious and wrist problems proceeded knee surgery in 2003, which Fernandez explained to Eurosport.
"I've been out of action with two injuries,” she said.
“I had a first knee injury and when I recovered from that I suffered an injury on the other knee. They were extremely tough moments for me but they have really helped me become stronger mentally so that I can continue to grow as a player."
"Sometimes I had to train sitting down as I couldn't get up and move,” said the pupil of Leonardo Jose Lerda.
“In my worst moments I had to really dig in and say to myself that I was still able to come back to this level.
“I really have to thank God that I can play again. Being on the court again and competing is what means most to me, we will see what I can do next."
On Wednesday, she meets French hope Razzano, who beat 25th-seeded Russian Dinara Safina 6-3 6-3, in the first round.
Razzano was a 6-3 6-3 second round victor over Fernandez on Bali hard courts in 2002.
