I'm Markus aka Kampi and sometimes I'm called "The tome writer", so be warned
, something big could be around the corner.
My little personal survey on your season so far.
What an amazing year for you, Jelena. You know, it was only a few month ago that we the people on "your" forum at WTAworld.com celebrated your entry to the TOP 10 of the world. Now it seems so far away. So much has happened and changed in the meantime. When we all look back since you were able to turnaround your career, beginning with the great achievement at the US. Open last year, I have the feeling that this was already centuries ago. This was only the very beginning of something big.
You had a brilliant start. The title win in Auckland followed by a great tournament in Sydney, with a final against Kim. You was so close to win this one against her. Unfortunately Kim retired and you won't get any more chances to beat her. Then the Australien Open, where you only lost against Serena, the later champion. Btw, it was a bit unlucky because Serena played fantastic and unfortunately you didn't play your best tennis on that day. Speaking of Serena, I believe you will meet again soon and you will have your revenge. After the aussies we had a series of tournaments like Tokyo, Dubai and Dohai. Especially in the desert series you did very well in reaching the SF's in both tournaments. But you really scared us to death in Dubai, when you sprained your ankle.
Thank god it wasn't that serious and we were all very relieved about that. In Dubai you showed the WTA-Tour who you are. A great fighter, because you felt pretty insecure because of your ankle. But finally you were able to give Justine a great fight in the semis. Btw, I will point to the special story with Justine later on.
Then came the US series of tournaments. You seemed a bit tired and not able to unleash your full potential at the first couple of american events. But at the very end you won your very first Tier I tournament title in Charleston. Giving us a hell of an excitement, especially in the semifinal against Venus. Oh girl, I think I'm not the only one who was so thrilled by this match. It was some kind of a milestone for you, wasn't it? I bet this one gave you a lot of confidence, because it was such a tough test of will. And you finally mastered this test so bravely. The final against Dinara was much easier for you, right? Only the stormy wind seemed to be your true rival in this match. But even this force of nature wasn't able to stop you. What a joy to see you holding your first Tier I trophy. And Jelena, I can tell you, a lot of people here changed their avatars on that day, including myself. I swear, I have never seen so many "Jelena-holding-the-Charleston-trophy-avatars
" in my whole life. It was like that we were all wearing the same kind of jersey and we had also a strong feeling of unity. It was great.
So far you had a very busy schedule, playing so many tournaments and everyone had a pretty good idea how stressful these last couple of weeks and month must have been for you. So a lot of people were expecting a longer break. But then your country desperately needed you in the FED Cup. And you gave such a great statement of your personality and where you belong. You played so many matches for Serbia on this first qualifying round and really working your heart out for the team. But without any kind of attitude or the will to be the great star. No, you gave them the feeling that you are just a member of the team and nothing more. But what a hell of a team player you are. As I mentioned earlier a lot of people were expecting something else from you especially after that stressful times in the states. Because you were so on the "move" up the rankings and it wouldn't be a surprise if you are going to skip the FED Cup to get some well needed rest. Everyone was aware that there will be bigger tasks ahead of you in terms of your single career. But that's not you, because you took the responsibility for your serbian team and finally helped them to reach the next round. BRAVO. Serbia can be proud of you girl.
Finally we entered the european continent with the series of red clay tournaments. Warsaw was once again a strong signal. Reaching the semis against your special opponent, the great champion Justine Henin. The queen of the red clay, the greatest and most complete player out there right now. Think about my last words, because in every single match against her so far, you were able to push her to the limit and force her to go the full distance. And it's always so close between you both. But Justine was once again a bit luckier in the end.
Then you headed over to my home country Germany. OMG, I apologise for the ugly weather. You know, one week before the event we had such a fantastic sunny weather and then this mess.
You had some slight trouble in the first few rounds but finally you were able to reach the QF. One more time against your "destiny" Justine. You played a great first set and surprised her a bit. But unfortunately darkness forced you to suspend the match in the second set. Btw, you played a fantastic last point on that day. It was 4:4 and Justine had to serve on the next day. I can tell you everyone was speculating about the outcome of this match. Then the saturday came. The weather was still bad and you both were forced to wait a little bit longer. Justine was able to hold her service and broke your service and took the second set. Now it was clear, once again the third has to decide between you both. And this set was a surprise in many ways. Everyone was expecting that Justine would have a big advantage now. But the early stage proved everybody wrong. You dominated her and broke her service over and over. I thought this was your day, because Justine already looked in the eye of a defeat. But then something strange happened. You was leading 4:0 and you had even the chance to break her service again for a possible lead of 5:0. But she was able to avoid that break and from that moment something was very wrong. I already wrote about my feelings in terms of this specific situation in some other post her at the board. It was like a boxing contest. You almost knocked her out. Finally you stood in front of her, ready to give her the final punch. But suddenly, you was not able to give her that punch. It seemed that you stepped away from her and began to play passive. I don't now, maybe I'm wrong. You simply gave her the space to live again on the court. An opportunity that a great champion like her always takes with a smile. And suddenly she was back in the game and was breathing "morning air". And with every game she won you obviously felt more and more insecure. Everything seemed hostile for you now. The loss of the comfortable lead, the new born strength of your opponent, the slippery court and finally the whole match. Nothing seemed right anymore. What a hard lesson this was for you. But you really shouldn't only see it that way. This was indeed a very negative experience but in the end it was just another important milestone for you. She is leading you 0:5 now, but you must be aware that you are 100% able to defeat her. And I bet she is also 100% aware of this. Maybe this loss was just destiny and your destiny simply said "NO, not yet, not here". Don't feel pressured to do better next time. Just work hard on your weaknesses an gain more confidence. Stay tall on the court. You know, Justine is already a fantastic champion and a hell of fighter. But only very few players have the ability to defeat her even on her preferred red clay surface. Be aware that you are one of the very few.
Personally I think you both will meet again on a BIGGER ground in the very near future. Maybe there was a reason your destiny told you "NO" the last time. And maybe the next time your destiny will answer you "YES". Believe in that, because everyone here at your forum at WTAworld believe in you.
To come to an end of my little "monster", btw sorry, I hope you will find the time in the future to visit your forum at WTAworld.com. (and maybe to finish reading my "Tolstoy
) You will always find a lot of great people here. All of them are strong supporters and fans of you. Btw, many of them are around every day, because we are on the "Mission:Jelena". I don't know, maybe you already visited this board as a guest or incognito?
But if not, you will be amazed how much energy you can find here. Take this as an invitation.
is a fantastic achievement, but it's still not the end of your road, Jelena.
Stay hungry and give us the next reason to change our avatars.
Good luck in Rome and lovely greetings,
Markus aka Kampi
