Re: Jelena Jankovic Cheering Thread - 2014 Season - Volume 17

To me, "Shappy's" style of play is a bit like a young Lisicki.. (What am I talking about.. Sabine is still young) more like a lesser version of Lisicki. She has great strength in her legs and upper body. She can hit some hard serves, she can stay in the rally a bit more than I think Sabine can. She's quite a bit shorter than JJ but has a good foundation to build on. Great serve for her size, I think.
It's really hard to judge because I would hate for someone who just now saw JJ for the first time describe her from this one match. Because this is not at all the JJ we know. And Bogota is one of the more unique clay court events with the way the ball just zips through the air. You're thinking clay court style of play but it doesn't at all look like a typical clay court event from any of the players. So seeing Shapatova on this surface isn't going to be a fair description.

EDIT one thing I'd like to add is that Shapatova never once looked to me like someone who thought she was going to win. JJ might have already had this win in the locker room.. so I don't think it's fair to say JJ is in great form by this routine win. JJ still has a lot of work to do in this tournament.. I think.

I'm impressed with Shapatova. But this is coming from a guy who was impressed with CoCo Vandeweghe, Garbine Muguruza, Madison Keys, Mona Barthell... and not impressed too much with Genie Bouchard and Simona Halep and look whose doing what in the sport right now.

Vecino in the QF. Clay specialist

Does anyone know how she plays?

I'm just praying after these two crappy matches she'll just cruise.

She played once against Jeca at USO,i think she has a good forehand and awful backhand

Lots of spin on the forehand. "Decent" at best BH. Good at the net for a Spanish but nothing flashy. Serve can have some pop but it's probably in her weakness category, especially on the 2nd serve.

JJ beat her in 2012 US Open 64 62 in R2. LAV won Bogota in 2012.

Scared again because Arruabarrena had to go through qualies, so she's got 5 match wins already while JJ is still trying to find form. She did double bagel in Qualies R1, and then 3 setters for QR2 and FQR. She beat Shapatava 46 63 62. She's also in doubles SF after two straight set wins.

As bad as it sounds I'm hoping she's fatigued so it gives JJ another edge. Jelena is twice as good as LAV on clay, but JJ's brain puts them on level terms. Although LAV isn't some special GOAT in the mentality department

Nervous once again This is the match I'm expecting to go 3 sets.

Despite not making many winners, she's still an agressive baseliner, and she doesn't only win matches by waiting the opponent's mistake, though she can do that at times also.

She has 2 legs and 2 arms so she will be tough opponent for our Jelena.

^ A bit harsh. But JJ does not at all look comfortable yet on this court. Not at all. Not even movement wise, imo.

Hahahahhahahahahahaha I'm dying here.

Ohhh this is once again tough times for JJ and us her fans. Anythng but a win would even more crash her selfconfidence and honestly I don't want her to play Fed cup and don't want her to get trashed by Simona once more.

The positive thing if she keeps her shit even slightly together she can win Bogota and reach position 6 on the list and she needs rae points.

JJ has not done well recently when playing on a Friday. I think she lost to Aga in IW QF on a Friday night, lost to Lepchenko on a Friday afternoon in Miami, and then BOO-SHARD on a Friday afternoon in Charleston

4th times the charm right? Jeca Prove us all wrong

Arruabarrena's quarterfinal foe, No.1 seed Jelena Jankovic, also has an impressive history here. The defending champion improved to 7-0 in Bogotá with a 64 63 defeat of Sofia Shapatava.

"I played much better today," Jankovic said. "The conditions are tough here but I'm happy that I improved from yesterday. Hopefully, I will play even better tomorrow.
