Jelena's ACES...help or hindrance?

Wasn't sure whether to debate this within a thread or start a new one, but decided on latter.

Jelena's popularity means that she is always in demand & of course won the ACES race on the WTA Tour last year, for most work, appearances etc away from the court.

However to me, that is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it proves JJ's popularity (you don't need to tell us that! ). But on the other, is it holding her back, especially in the bigger tournaments - & grand slams?

She is leading the ACES again so far this year. However is that not symptematic of playing all the tournaments under the sun again? What happened to her cutting down to help her rest - again, a constant theme for Jelena is "tired", "exhausted" & other similar adjectives.

So should her entourage, including her coach (who may or may not be Sanchez again ) not take her aside & say that, whilst it's nice to be popular, it won't help her take the next step - something that all JJ fans want her to take & know she can, if only she'd stop flogging herself to death?

I think she's handling her off-court appearances and promoting the tour about right at the moment. But she will (and probably does) have to say no when it conflicts with her tennis. She's certainly in demand as the most fan friendly player with a sush a fantastic outgoing personality. So she will get asked more and more, the more popular she is. But she enjoys these things and it's good for both us and her that she does them. It's no surprise to me for example that she was the player who they asked to wear that dress of phone cells. And that shouldn't mean her tennis suffers.

As far as it being symptomatic of her playing all the time. I think she sets her schedule for what she thinks is best for her tennis and/or what she herself really wants to do. Whether it is good for her and her tennis or not is another question. But I don't think that is an Aces related matter. Setting a schedule that is right for her body and her tennis is the most important thing IMO. And definitely not adding extra tournaments if you are really tired. But it does seem to me that some top players set their schedule and then pull out of tournaments at the last minute all the time. And I can't help thinking it's a lot "because they are tired" as opposed to picking up a genuine injury at the last minute. That's definitely not something I'd associate with putting yourself out for the tour and being the Aces leader. And that is something Jelena doesn't like to do because she doesn't like letting people down. I hope in that respect she stays that way.

I love our popular JJ ! And I don't think her off-court activities stop her from training - she still has more than enough time to work on her game (whether she does that...). She played only big tourneys this year with the exception of Bangalore and I'm sure that won't change unless she starts losing 1st rounds or sth...I just want her to work hard on some elements of her game - serve, consistency of the forehand, overall aggressiveness and coming more to the net...and stay the same bubbly person off-court. I think I'm not asking for too much .

It's a dilemma. I too want to see more of Jelena offcourt, as she is such a personality & fun (as well as attractive). But equally I want to see her reach what is her goal, to win a singles slam.

We will see.

And about ACES - I'm so excited every time she serves one . She's an ACE both on and offcourt!

Re: Jelena's ACES...help or hindrance?

I dunno... I think the tour have (in the past) had JJ as their "go-to" girl if anyone drops out (WC in Beijing, wasn't it? Or somewhere far flung and a match too far anyway)...

I have no problem with her combining her give-back activities with the planned tournies - but we come back to the age old discussion - who could give her the counsel she needs (and christ only knows, she NEEDS this)... to help her strike that acceptable balance.

On the positive - she's really seemed to be much more at ease with her game etc since Sanchez came back into her life and for once her schedule seems sensible for the next 3-4 weeks...

Re: Jelena's ACES...help or hindrance?

It does not seem to have hurt her so far and if it raises her profile then it is a good thing. I guess JJ likes to think she can win at anything - I mean she was number one in the world as a junior, she was always top of her class at college and now she is number one ACE. Anyway, since she plays so many tournaments it should be easy for her to win the ACES race every year.

Re: Jelena's ACES...help or hindrance?

I think that the ACES thing is completely separate from how many tournaments she plays, except of course she has more opportunities to rack up more ACES points if she plays more tournaments.

I don't think she should allow herself to be the WTA's go-to girl when they need someone now, immediately, to play a tournament in Timbuktu. That's gotta stop. But I think the ACES appearances are fine-- if she's doing them just to be popular, that's not right, but I don't think that's it. I think she enjoys interacting with the fans and doing some charity work, and if she likes giving back a little, I think that's great. It's not enough time to eat into her preparation, and she's a great ambassador for the tour because she *does* like doing those things so much. Win/win, IMO.
