I would like to say congratulations that you reached the WTA No. 9 position.
It’s really a joy for us all that you are a true TOP 10 player now. You had a really great year so far and something BIG could be just around the corner for you.
You already sent a strong message to the whole WTA, which is: “You better watch out for JJ”! My decision to join this board wasn’t only because of your great play. I noticed you for the first time during last years US. Open. You did very well and as I said I noticed something more than only your game. You laughed and joked around and it seemed that everyone enjoyed it as much as you did. And so did I. I started to ask myself: “Who the hell is this young lady?”
You now, I’m German and I followed tennis since the mid 80’s. I grow up with german players like Boris Becker and of course the one and only Steffi Graf. Both of them started a big boom in Germany and almost everyone began to talk about tennis. I remember that nearly every tournament was aired on TV at this time. It was a great decade for tennis in Germany. Especially Steffi’s achievements were so BIG that some of her records could last forever. Speaking of Steffi. There was the upcoming rivalry with Monica Seles. Monica was truly a great champion and she and Steffi gave us some of the greatest matches of modern women’s tennis. Monica has slightly overtaken Steffi and broke her undisputed dominance. And than came this shameful day in Hamburg back in 1993. I was so shocked when this weird and crazy german so called “Steffi-Fan” attacked Monica with a knife and hurt her. This was really a terrible and shameful day for Germany which I never forget. I mentioned Monica because I read that you are a great admirer of her. And I want to let you know.
But now is the time to leave the past behind. You know, over the years I lost interest in tennis a little bit. With the retirement of both Steffi and Boris came a big vacuum in german tennis, which isn’t filled until today. The media interest was sinking and right now the almost only possibility to watch tennis on TV is the german edition of Eurosport. In comparison to the past this is really not much.
But it was obviously enough to notice you during last years US. Open. I cannot exactly describe it, but there was something about you which gave me back my interest in tennis. There is this smile and joy that you have. You seem to be one of the very few real characters out there. I read that your way into tennis was a long and stony road. Growing up during the terrible war in former Yugoslavia and later being alone as a young teenager in the US and fight your way through Nick’s “boot camp”.
But finally this combination makes you that kind of outstanding person which you are today. Unfortunately I don’t know you personally but that’s my impression from a disctance. This and of course your great potential combined with a great fighting spirit (yesterdays match against Henin is a good example; btw the next time she will go down
)lead me finally to this great community which is called “WTAworld.com”. So thank you for giving me back the joy in tennis. This is really true and not a kind of “bootlicking”.
Take good care of your health (especially your ankle) and gain more and more confidence and experience and mental strength. Because I’m not the only one here who believes that you can achieve much more than just only the No. 9 spot in the WTA-ranking. It's only just begun. Believe in this because I (we) do.
Coming to an end here, because this becomes pretty long(I’m so sorry), let me say this:
“JJ, we need you out there.” "So come on SWP, (ask Luka about this
) give us more of that excitement and joy."
Thank you and good luck for the rest of your season. Take care.
Lovely greetings from a supporter and friend.
