Re: * Magdalena Rybarikova Thread *

Magda rules.

I hope she can keep this form at Roland Garros and through the grass season, especially Wimbledon. It is time Magda showed her stuff at The All England Club and had a really nice run there. It's long overdue.

^ Nice Pics. After the success of Prague, a retirement in Strasbourg... I'm hoping it's just a precaution before RG and Wimbledon. I agree it's about time she leaves a mark at Wimbledon this year, even if it's just one match she wins.

All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.

Not a great draw for Magda. Kuznetsova may have been AWOL for much of the year but at a grand slam you never know with her.
It will either be a beatdown or a mess of a match.

Re: * Magdalena Rybarikova Thread *

Magda's having a good time at Birmingham again; she's reached the third round same as last year after her wins over Webley-Smith and Vandeweghe. Good shot at the QF's against Rodionova Junior now.

Re: * Magdalena Rybarikova Thread *

Lost in Birmingham against winner Lisicki in 2 tight sets.

Now an (unfair) Wimbledon R1 vs Azarenka

Though Magda could surely trouble her, also considering Azarenka retired from her last match.

Wimbledon 2011: Andrew's first-round TV-report (Part 1)

=================
THE CHAMPIONSHIPS (Wimbledon, London, England; grass; Major)
=================---------------------------
First-round TV-report: Rybáriková v Azarenka (Part 1: Monday 20th June 2011)
--------------------------------------------

* Magdaléna Rybáriková [EF] v VICTORIA AZARENKA [4,DF], 4-6 *2-3 (40/30)

A good match so far. Azarenka is doing a lot of damage with her powerful groundstrokes, but Magda is doing a lot to frustrate her. Magda gets a lot of balls back with her long-limbed lateral retrieval, mixes up the pace and the spins, is not afraid to go to the net, and has hit some amazing shots – particularly volleys – in this match so far.

Magda served brilliantly at Birmingham, but sadly not so far here. She survived her opening service-game despite only getting 2 of 12 first serves in – they were both aces, and Magda also picked off a marvellous backhand half-volley winner at 15/30.

Magda hit a stunning forehand pass-winner down the line at 0:0 1-1* 0/0, but otherwise failed to pressure the Azarenka serve. In fact, Azarenka has not yet faced a break-point in this match.

Magda hit a fantastic down-the-line off-backhand winner onto the baseline at *2-3 Deuce #2, a gorgeous crosscourt backhand volley-winner at 3-3* 15/30*, and an amazing off-forehand half-volley winner off a hard, deep ball at 4-4* 15/30*.

The first 9 games went with serve, then Azarenka hit two groundstroke-winners to reach set-points at 0:0 5-4* 40/0*. Magda saved the first two with good first serves, then made Azarenka work hard to win a great spreading rally to take the first set.

Magda hit a beautiful crosscourt backhand volley-winner at 0:1 *0-1 15/0, and another at 1-1* 0/0.

At 0:1 *1-2, Azarenka ran way outside the alley to hit a one-handed backhand winner, followed by a down-the-line backhand winner to make it 15/40. Magda saved the first break-point by running backwards and hitting a crosscourt forehand volley-winner, and the second with an off-forehand winner after Azarenka had volleyed a ball that was going out! Magda held for 2-2* with a crosscourt forehand volley-winner, and celebrated with a huge smile.

The match was suspended for rain just after Magda won a 21-stroke baseline-rally in which she appeared to hit a backhand wide, but it wasn’t called, so she gets to sleep on game-point rather than break-point.

First set
---------
RYBÁRIKO _*_*_*_*__ 4
AZARENKA *_*_*_*_*@ 6

The match was third on Court 2. They came onto court under threatening grey clouds, Azarenka wearing a white hoodie. Azarenka warmed up in a tracksuit, while Magda was wearing a nice white dress with a sleeved top.

The match started at 15:50 BST.

Azarenka serving 0-0: Second serve: off-backhand return wide. 15/0. First serve out wide, deep in the corner, forced Magda to hit a backhand return wide. 30/0. Azarenka punished a short return with a crosscourt backhand winner. 40/0 (GP #1). Azarenka went to the net, forcing Magda to net a forehand. Held.

Magda’s first service-game is going to be interesting, because she was serving brilliantly at Birmingham, but Azarenka is one of the best returners in the game.

Rybáriková serving 0-1: Deep first serve forced Azarenka to hit an off-backhand wide. 15/0. Azarenka hit a big off-backhand winner onto the sideline. 15/15. Magda caught her second-serve toss... Azarenka’s return landed on the baseline... Azarenka drew Magda to the net with a dropshot, and hit a crosscourt forehand pass-volley winner. 15/30. Magda went to the net and picked off a marvellous backhand half-volley winner off a dipping ball that landed behind her. Tracy Austin described it as “fishing”, which is rather apt as the Slovak word “rybár” means “fisher”! 30/30. Ace out wide. 40/30 (GP #1). Double fault (second serve into the net). Deuce #1. Ace out wide: deep in the corner. Ad Rybáriková (GP #1). Short second serve... Magda on the third stroke netted a backhand. Deuce #2. Azarenka hit an off-backhand just wide. Ad Rybáriková (GP #2). Double fault (wild second serve long). Deuce #3. Azarenka netted a cheap backhand on the fourth stroke. Ad Rybáriková (GP #3). Second serve out wide: Azarenka sprayed a wild crosscourt backhand long and wide. Held.

Magda only got 2 of 12 first serves in in that game, so she was fortunate that Azarenka made errors on the key points. Magda was serving much better than this at Birmingham.

Azarenka serving 1-1: Azarenka went to the net, but Magda hit a stunning forehand pass-winner down the line. 0/15. Azarenka’s deep crosscourt backhand forced Magda to net a backhand and mutter. 15/15. Azarenka cleaned the sideline with a crosscourt forehand winner. 30/15. Magda netted a forehand. 40/15 (GP #1). Deep first serve out wide forced Magda to hit a forehand long.

Rybáriková serving 1-2: Ace down the middle: on the centre-line. 15/0. First serve: Azarenka netted a forehand return. 30/0. Magda went to the net, but Azarenka ripped a crosscourt forehand pass-winner. 30/15. Kick second serve out wide: Azarenka netted a backhand. 40/15 (GP #1). Magda backhand long. 40/30 (GP #2). Deep first serve down the middle forced Azarenka to earth a forehand return. Held.

BBC commentators usually steer clear of appreciating a player’s beauty, but David Mercer openly enjoyed the way the wind ruffled Magda’s hair, having already complimented her on her earrings.

Azarenka serving 2-2: Magda on the fourth stroke mishit a forehand long, and stared at her racket. 15/0. Azarenka kept wonderful length, but Magda’s defence was too strong, and Azarenka hit a crosscourt forehand wide. 15/15. First serve out wide: Magda netted a forehand return. 30/15. Magda chopped a makeable forehand return into the net. 40/15 (GP #1). Ace out wide: on the sideline. Held.

Rybáriková serving 2-3: Azarenka went to the net, forcing Magda to hit a forehand lob long. 0/15. Azarenka on the fourth stroke hit a backhand just long. 15/15. Ace down the middle: on the centre-line. 30/15. Azarenka handled a kick serve out wide with a crosscourt backhand return deep into the corner, forcing Magda to hit a down-the-line backhand wide. 30/30. First serve forced Azarenka to net a backhand return. 40/30 (GP #1). Azarenka’s deep off-forehand forced Magda to net a backhand. She emitted a yell of annoyance. Deuce #1. Azarenka hit a crunching crosscourt backhand winner. Ad Azarenka (BP #1). Magda caught her first-serve toss, hit a first serve out wide + crosscourt forehand deep into the corner, forcing Azarenka into error, but Magda had a nasty-looking slip by the net. Deuce #2. Magda hit a fantastic down-the-line off-backhand winner onto the baseline. Ad Rybáriková (GP #2). Azarenka looked to punish a second serve with a crosscourt backhand to the sideline, but Magda got it back, and Azarenka sprayed a wild forehand volley just long. Held.

Magda did very well to hold there, as Azarenka is returning better and better.

David Mercer: “When she gets it right, it’s a lovely flowing serve.”

Azarenka serving 3-3: First serve + off-forehand volley-winner. 15/0. Magda went to the net and hit an awkward high forehand volley, forcing Azarenka to hit a down-the-line forehand wide. 15/15. Magda went to the net, but Azarenka hit a down-the-line backhand winner – that’s the risk you take when you use a crosscourt approach. 30/15. Magda went to the net behind a down-the-line backhand, and hit a gorgeous crosscourt backhand volley-winner. 30/30. Magda netted a backhand dropshot off a deep crosscourt backhand – bad choice of shot. Magda looked up to the sky and smiled. 40/30 (GP #1). First serve out wide forced Magda to hit a backhand return long. Held.

Tracy Austin: “Rybáriková is starting to find her legs in this match, starting to feel more comfortable out here.”

Rybáriková serving 3-4 (new balls): Deep forehand return down the line forced Magda to net a backhand. 0/15. 106mph first serve forced a short return, which Magda dispatched with a crosscourt backhand winner. 15/15. First serve out wide induced Azarenka to hit a forehand return wide. Azarenka whacked a ball away with an annoyed look on her face. 30/15. Azarenka sprayed an off-forehand just long and just wide. 40/15 (GP #1). Azarenka hit a makeable backhand just long. Held.

It’s so much fun to see the Rybáriková magic beginning to befuddle even a top player such as Azarenka.

Azarenka serving 4-4: Magda hit a wild sliced backhand long and wide. 15/0. Magda hit a deep, body-jamming backhand return down the middle, forcing Azarenka to net a forehand. 15/15. Magda tried a crosscourt backhand dropshot, but Azarenka ran it down, took the initiative and hit an off-forehand smash-winner. Held.

Rybáriková serving 4-5: Azarenka hit a pinpoint backhand winner down the line: just inside the sideline. 0/15. Magda hit an off-forehand wide off a deep ball from Azarenka, and yelled. 0/30. Azarenka hit a crosscourt forehand winner. 0/40 (SP #1 for Azarenka). First serve: forehand return long by a whisker. 30/40 (SP #3 for Azarenka). Azarenka played a great spreading rally full of powerful shots to the sidelines, but Magda made her work hard before she finally created an opening to hit a backhand winner down the line. Azarenka won the first set 6-4 at 16:35 BST (45m).

Tracy Austin: “When she saw Azarenka was in trouble, she was more than willing to come in and finish the point off.
