Poland 2 - 1 Russia
Maja lost to Anastasia Potapova, 6-3 6-7(5) 1-6
Iga d. Olesya Pervushina, 3 & 3
Maja & Iga d. Pervushina/Potapova, 1 & 3
Maja started well, unlike her opponent: her crafty scrambling unsettled Nastya at the start, draining a lot of UEs. She lead 6-3 *3-1, and also was 4-1* up in the TB. I had stream problems after the first set so I couldn't really see what happened, by I assume Nastya progressively got used to Maja's unusual gamestyle, managed to cut on the UEs, and reversing the momentum gave her a lot of strenght to perform her rather aggressive game in the 3rd.
Iga was mighty impressive, so solid throughout both her matches!
She never let Olesya breathe, she was as aggressive as her but could keep the ball into the court much longer and thus she was winning all the rallies, generating so much frustration that Olesya's rather unstable game completely folded.
In doubles they completely exposed the Russians (I, as a big fan of the Russian pair, was quite embarrassed even
), there was no compettition, they were toying with them. Iga was as good as in singles, and Maja totally played her part as well, very solid at the net.
Totally deserved win, really. They'll place USA in the final, should be very competitive!
