16y.o. Tzveti Pironkova lost today to world's #109 Marta Marrero of Spain.
She surely played one of her best matches in career, but had no luck in the final games in the match
However she'll move to #327-#328 in the rankings in two weeks.
Here are the stats of the match:

MARRERO -->
Aces: 0
Double Faults: 4
First service: 58%

Total pts won: 119/228

PIRONKOVA -->

Double Faults: 1
First service: 75%
Break pts won: 8/13
Total pts won: 109/228

Match duration: 3h 00min

Pironkova has commitments for 2 more tournaments this year, but most likely she'll play only the one!

Australian Open

R1: Tsvetana Pironkova def. Pauline Parmentier 6-4 3-6 6-3

Really tough and intense match. I just thought Tsveti will lose that match. She won the first set quite easily without being broken and winning her serves easily. The second set was quite the opposite. Tsveti's first serve was 30 % in that set and she lost 4 games in a row leading with a break 3-2. The third set was a revenge for the second in which the french was leading with 3-2 with a break and then Tsveti won 4 games in row herself. Good Luck in the second round now vs Niculescu. Haideeeee. :bounce:

Hellbourne ist back!

Explain to me - how could she act as a pusher against a pusher?!She was outpushed all the time! What was this senseless tactics from her?I suppose she's the only top 50 player who always has difficulties against pushers!

New coaching ... She needs it - at least for this! But I've read some comment in Bulgaria "from a friend of hers" that she's happy with her current status - with her beloved boyfriend and united family. And whatever she does in tournaments is just an addition to this perfect harmony.Thinking of her interviews I pretty much believe this.

Next is Fed Cup and then Paris, I think. She has slight chances to be seeded there.Cause she's now 9th or 10th in the list, but new Paris Indoors Chief Amelie Mauresmo :)worship:) aims at attracting more top players and Justine and Kim immediately responsed.

Truly depressing match to watch. I thought Niculescu may have to retire at 5-4 in the first set as she seemed to be having some weird breathing problems/chest pains and had an injury timeout. But she just continued to slice and float balls down the middle and wait for Tsvetana to hit the ball out.

I played a match like this at the local club last year -- opponent just kept getting the ball back using slices and lobs -- I couldn't get it past him. Then I tried to play his game. Same result as Tsveti, very frustrating.

I fully agree with you. That was the most frustrating and embarrasing match I have ever seen - and I don't mean only from Tsveti and her supporters' perspective. Monica Niculescu should really be ashamed of what she demonstrated on court - serves of 98 km/hour and lob after lob ad nauseum, until all the spectators wanted to throw up. Unless it is a form of psychological torture of the opponent that she has invented - very successfully, I may add - to drive her opponents to distraction until they'd rather shoot themselves rather than play another point against her.

It is not that Tsveti didn't try to build up some pace and play properly, but there was almost 0 pace on that ball, coming from Nicolescu, I saw Tsveti try and the stupid thing would not bounce up! Or, with the picking unpredictable wind, she would try too hard and the ball would shoot out. A couple of questionable linesmen calls did not help her frustration at all. At one point Nicolescu's ball was out by so much that the audience couldn't help silent and joined in, but that didn't help either.

I am not saying that with proper examining of Niculescu's "style" (or, shall I say "unique style of torture") and good coaching she wouldn't be beaten. I am just trying to point out to all those who were not present at the court just HOW frustrating the whole thing was. We were close to tears or to taking up in arms against Monica. I have never really been against a player in my life before, but I am prepared to make just this exception for her. She is a disgrace for the beautiful game of tennis.

Today Schiavone took the first set easily against Niculescu, but the minute she took her foot off the pedal and allowed the latter to play her game, she was down 5:2 in no time and had to go to a tiebreak to win. This girl is an unexpected menace, I am telling you, her tactics are just too frustrating.

Of course, I have to agree that Tsveti will benefit from a coach that is not related to her and is a specialist in tennis first and foremost. That is where she can get some good advice how to overcome confusing rivals like Niculescu, she obviously cannot figure that all by herself.

For those who do not know in what condition she played her first round match, I have to say that Tsveti was a true hero. She came out very sick and with injured muscles in both legs, her serve was obviously hugely affected and she could barely get the first one in, but she battled none the less and managed to win. One of the bandages was off for the match with Niculescu, but her condition was not that largely improved.

Even though she played well in her doubles match and won a couple of games all by herself (literally - she just served and returned well and Paszek didn't touch the ball at all). However, she needed a better partner in a match against Cara Black and Rodionova - they noticed that Paszek is the weak link and attacked her, so she lost a lot of points. The final result does not reflect the battle that was going on, Tsveti and Tamira were actually pressing them a lot and fighting hard in a lot of the games. But they lost vital points. Tsveti overshot 2-3 times and Tamira did... a lot more. But they are not used to playing together either, so that takes time.

Anyway, sad for Tsveti, I am sure we all have expected and wanted a different result. She would have done a lot better against Schiavone.

Tsveti will not hang around Melbourne, but head back to Bulgaria and prepare for Fed Cup. Better luck in Israel, Tsveti!!! :bounce::wavey:

Tsveti just keeps proving that Wimbledon was just a one time thing and was a matter of luck and a great deal of self condfidence for those two weeks. Yesterday she played like a 15 yo girl. She and her "coach" know very well how Niculescu plays but we didn't see any tactic from her. The only thing she had to do is to hit hard but those UE's were terrible. The bad thing is that Tsvetana keeps her downslide in her game. She plays awful and apparently she doesn't do anything to change it. That will only get her outside of top 90 after the end of the season. This year will be like 2009 for her. Weak, 1 rd losses, terrible game, no confidence. With this game whoever she draws in a WTA level match will eat her for breakfast. Don't see her doing anything in Paris, Fed Cup, Dubai and so on. So disappointed from her.

Yeah . I was looking at her results from 2005-6 and thought "how is she not a solid top 20 player by now?" Once you get to the top level in any sport (basically), for an athlete to reach their full potential there needs to be much work and training etc put in. I won't pass any judgments on what she is doing (obviously I don't know her or her family personally) but judging from her results and match footage, some improvement in tactics, mentality and technique could bring some better results.

It's just frustrating as a fan to see all this potential and almost no consistency . But I do agree: I think this is why her results are what they are. From what you're mentioned she appears to be happy with her lifestyle, and if she's happy then that's what matters.

It is revealed now that Tsveti had little injury at AO.She had little thigh cramp according to Dora Rangelova, coach and trainer of the national team for Fed Cup."Tsveti had some problems, but since Sunday she has been training at Lokomotiv courts in Plovdiv and is now fully healed. She is awfully disappointed with her early exit in Australia, but I hope it would be an additional stimul for her during the matches for Fed Cup in Israel."

Well, Tsveti never complained of suffering from injuries, but it's now more like excuses for the media. In Palermo she had shoulder injury, at last US Open she had fever and now she has thigh problems.I hope this is the reason for her not to fulfill our expectations after Wimbledon and feels confident as she is a GS semifinalists and World no.35.

It's offtopic, but just to ask Bulgarian users here - if someone wants to join Bulgarian Fed Cup Tennis Tipping team, he/she can commit participating here: http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=427530 .We are two until now, but we can have two more players.

Fed cup results so far:

R1: M. LINETTE lost to E. KOSTOVA 4-6 6-4 6-7(5)
R2: A. RADWANSKA def. T. PIRONKOVA 6-2 6-4
R3 K. JANS / A. ROSOLSKA vs. M. MALEEVA / T. PIRONKOVA

So it's 1-1 going into the doubles -- not sure what Maleeva will be like, but good luck BG!
